well...there's already D&D online for PC and D&D Neverwinter on Pc, PS4 and Xbox one...
however id love a true table top game on them, a completely 3D roll20 would be awesome, with actual minis and dice throws and well everything, but i feel like that would be an entirely unlikely endeavor
I'd love to have a version of the tabletop game availabale on the consoles that D&DBeyond could track. that would be cool. I just got back into D&D after 30 years, so my memory is catching up to me and the future looks fun!

Hebbe!
Hey folks, I use to play D&D years ago (30yrs) and just recently got back into it. Now I have been playing RPG games during my absence from the tabletop version of the game and I'm trying to get my son who's almost 23 into the tabletop version as well. I'm trying out the console versions of the games on my Xbox, which you can catch gameplay footage or streams of over on my Twitch channel.
by the way - "Hebbe" (hah-bah) means "Hello friends" in NA (Northern Arapaho language.
You know, one thing I never understood was why D&D games are almost all action games in some way, and not turn-based tactics games. I know that it would be impossible to fully represent D&D in that fashion... one of the big appeals of D&D over video games is the fact that you're not limited to just the pre-designated actions of an in-game character, but I still think that the basic rules of D&D would fit better into that system than what we usually end up with, which is mostly just action RPGs where stuff has the official D&D names (as opposed to unlicensed stuff, which is often filled with D&D stuff but just calls Beholders "Observers" or some nonsense)
Baulders Gate is turn based, and you can play online, but not on consoles. At least the early access version is. And Solasta is also turn based. It started on PC, but it’s on Xbox now. Free with game pass. I’m pretty sure you can play the PC version multi player, don’t know about consoles.

I don't know if newer games in the franchise are different, but although Baldur's Gate games are turn-based, they don't really play like D&D... if anything it feels more like a real-time strategy game. I feel like a game that more accurately recreates the feel of D&D combat would be more of a grid-based, single-turn-at-a-time tactical RPG... closer to something like Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics.
BG3 if I remember right, while not strictly a grid, does have limited movement per turn and one turn at a time if I"m not mistaken. Same with Solasta.
Though no video game can fully capture playing D&D since everything has to be pre programmed. You can't really derail a video game's story the way you foil the DM's plans with an unexpected approach.

I do wonder if that's why no game has really gone all-in on trying to recreate the specific gameplay of D&D... it could be a sort of "uncanny valley" thing, where the closer you get to the actual gameplay of the tabletop game the more the limitations get amplified.
Kind of a tangent, but it has me thinking about any time I've played a Monopoly game that tried to recreate the full game experience. The concept of trading, negotiating, etc. is a key element to the actual game, but it's really hard to represent that digitally... there's either convoluted menus, or bad AI... meanwhile the games that are most fun to play simplify things and make the game more accessible.

I love the tactical role playing games and would not mind at all if D&D got an installment in the genre (I am still torn up that a childhood friend stole my FFT). I do not know if I feel it could capture a real D&D TTRPG experience though. BG does a pretty decent job. Especially when in multiplayer mode and your friend chooses the NE route in social encounters while you are trying to play a LG PC…

Solasta is turn based on a grid. It was actually pretty fun and follows 5e very well. They didn’t get an official license, so they just used the OGL/basic free rules, and then “homebrewed” a couple extra subclasses/subraces. They don’t have all the classes, but it did a pretty good job, imo.

There are the Baldur's Gate games including 3 in early access, Solasta is based on D&D 5E.
