Mostly just for the heck of it I decided to put together a Fighter concept I've had for a while using the 2024 builder and one thing jumped out right away with the new creation options. The class equipment preloads are significantly less flexible than they were before- the 2014 Fighter had the wildcard option of two martial weapons or a martial weapon and a shield, whereas neither of the prebuilt kits in 2024 offers a shield, and both lock you into specific weapon sets. This especially jumps out at me when this is the same update that introduced Weapon Masteries for greater Fighter options, since now they exist but you can't exercise the options at creation unless you go fully from scratch on equipment. It's not the end of the world, but it stands out to me as a major point against making the game really accessible to new players when there's no middle ground between "build a cookie-cutter character with our guidelines" or "figure it all out yourself".
No that is how the basic rules character building for 2024 will be.
It’s all select quick and move on, no real customization. The ability to mix up a build is more probably in the DMG, but highly debated at the moment.
They got eight months to get the site one way or another, lets work the bugs before we attempt to break it.
I hope that's just because the 2024 PHB isn't fully online yet. Or because you were just using the basic rules options.
It's literally how the gear prebuilds are written up for the classes in the PHB, not a problem with the Builder. You either go with an option where everything is picked out in advance, or you just get X gold to spend.
It is an interesting catch. All three options equal out to be approximately the same value. Option A is 155g, B is 163g, and C is 155g. I would probably just work with my players who do not like the two listed item options to guide them on what they are looking for, using the 155g option.
I'm not saying it's a massive hurdle, it just really stood out that when they're trying to give Fighters in particular more options it's also harder to prebuild based on your preference for aesthetics or masteries.
Yeah, strange there’s no sword and board option. But I think it is really for new players. Experienced ones will feel pretty confident about swapping the greatsword for a longsword and shield and calling it good.
I wish Wizards would put more emphasis on the BR/SRD, and push for that to onboard new players. The PHB should offer more options to cater to veteran players who know what they are doing. Given how niche D&D is, I do not think it is a good idea to make people pay for D&D if they have never experienced it before. Even if people are willing to try it, they do not always enjoy it, so marketing a $59.99 book as the normal entry point into the hobby feels a bit backwards.

Well, back to buying gear with starting gold instead of taking equipment packages based on class, I guess.

"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
I agree that the new 2024 equipment system is fairly limiting.
On the flip side, I didn't like the 2014 system either, and thought it was clunky,
I'll just continue doing what I have been always doing when creating characters; wait until the character is built, then go into the Character Sheet and go to Manage Inventory, and only add what I need for that specific character.
Every time I have ever used the pre-built equipment in the 2014 version, I spend more time going through my inventory and deleting items I don't need. Not to mention, the pre-built packs come is over filled (one example: Standard Backpack can carry 30 pounds, and the Explorers Pack has 59 pounds of stuff in/on it).
It just seems easier to figure out all of your equipment after you have finished creating the basic info and just do so on the Character Sheet, but that is just me :)

I've been doing this for years too! For me, this was and still is so much easier.
