So as the title says, I went to join the official Discord of DnD and came across the fact that I need to give them my phone number when I have never had to give my phone number anywhere else before. I'm just curious as to why, because honestly, I don't feel comfortable giving out my number as I don't want it used like that and I don't need it sold somewhere. I want to be apart of the community, but I don't like the idea of having my phone number out there on the web. Any way to get by this?
The reason they ask for phone numbers is because it helps keep blocked users or bot accounts filtered out. It both adds another layer the people running spam/DM bots need to add to get in and provides a unique identifier that isn't as easily replaced as an email address or spoofed as an IP address. I've linked mine with my Discord and used it for another server and Beyond's and haven't had any increase in the number of spam calls I get. I suppose if you're really all that concerned you can see if buying one of those disposable prepaid phones works.
I'm not paying 20 or more dollars for a disposable phone just to access a website that's free to sign up for and use. That's insane to me. I mean, I get it, I get why they do it, but that seems like a little overkill to me. Also, O don't understand who wants to waste their time trying to get back on a server they were banned from, or even trying to get in to continue to cause trouble...waste of time, but I guess people are weird.
Trolls, of course, and then like I said there's also DM and spam bots trying to phish in the really big servers. I've seen it in a few other such public ones.
Like I said, I get it, I do. I guess because I barely use discord and don't run a server, it just seems so unnecessary. Oh well, guess I'm not joining. Thanks for the info though, I appreciate it.
Weird, coz I'm in the D&D Beyond Discord server and never had to give a phone number.

That's why I was asking, I have never been asked for my phone number on Discord before, so I found it weird. Though to be fair, it could be a new thing, because I rarely use my Discord lol.

I do know it is a setting for verifying accounts on servers using either email or phone for 2-factor authorisation, but I've never come across any server insisting on phone, and I never got prompted for such when joining D&D Beyond's server. Admittedly that was a fair while ago so they could have changed it.
It's a weird thing, because it's the least secure method of verification/2FA, and should generally be avoided. But their server, their rules ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Another reason not to join their discord, I don't trust them to protect it, nor do I trust that they won't abuse it. There are a countless number of others you could join for that same 'community'.

Playing D&D since 1982
Have played every version of the game since Basic (Red Box Set), except that abomination sometimes called 4e.

When you verify with discord in general, it shows you have a phone number tied to your account. If you do, you can already participate in the D&D Beyond discord. Discord gets the phone number, D&D Beyond/Wizards doesn't though, through that medium anyway.
That's it.
People in this thread are wild with how little they understand how Discord as a platform works and throwing shit out there.
The short version is if you have your phone number tied to your discord account, and your account gets banned from their server? You can't just flippantly register another account that also doesn't have 2FA on it. At no point did D&D Beyond get access to that info, but they put it in place using the guidelines that Discord has in place as a protection mechanism from people who do get banned from their server since by and large most people don't have two phone numbers.
It is about end user protection, because accounts that don't have those things enabled are wildly susceptible to scams and those accounts can then come into your server and try to scam others. It's "also" about ban protection. Honestly, it's probably much more scam protection than anything else because any layer of security that hampers it will reduce it by a good clip.
Weird, coz I'm in the D&D Beyond Discord server and never had to give a phone number.
If you already have a phone number tied to your account, you don't have to do it again.
I don't have any phone numbers tied to my account. Never have, never will.

I don't know. I wasn't asked and I will never give out my phone number anyway. Companies lie when they say they only do it for security purposes. The fact is it makes it easier for your government to find out who you are, when they offer your number to them.

Oh come on, really? You really think a) "Big Brother" is that interested in monitoring every random internet activity and b) they need any extra leg up to trace a typical user to the source?

It's less about user-end security and more about being an identifier that is less easily created and more easily blacklisted.
