Btw, LotR bug tracker states not to multiclass with other sources, so I can only assume it’s a new method of class creation that is getting a playtest.
Nah; it's because they're not calibrated on the same scale as mainline D&D classes. They exist in their own bubble of balance. The system will work if you do, but some of your levels are gonna be way more powerful than others.

For instance, the Virtues (essentially feats/ASI) happen every 2 levels, so a level 10 char would have 5 feats at that point. With a Fighter, you'd be absurdly powerful, with a total of 10.
I think homebrew classes would be awesome, however the homebrew subclasses I’ve seen are bad enough, and with homebrew classes that’s that x11 so it’ll be a terrible idea but who cares
I feel like the seven- yes, seven- new classes they've released have really been leading up to one thing:
HOMEBREW CLASSES!
I really hope this is the case. Who else thinks this should happen?
Should it happen, yes, I would love to see it. Will it. No, Hasbro laid off all the people who can make those changes to the website.
And all the remaining IT are presumably focused on Sigil.
Sigil is likely going to be a money pit, draining time, money, manpower & resources that should go into getting this site functional compared to Roll20 or Foundry, to the detriment of the rest of the franchise.
It's why we can't have nice things like HB classes.
So basically, don't use DnDBeyond because they are not going to let us make homebrew classes ever, the entire place was bought up to act as a prebuilt forum for WoTC, and it is going to slowly die from maintenance issues accruing due to changing requirements to meet the owning companies demands?

Web design, and web functionality are a different set of skills to video game design and video game functionality. You don't hire a video game designer to make a web site, and you don't hire a web designer to make a video game. A fully 3D VTT is essentially a video game. So no the IT personnel at WotC were not taken away from DnDB to work on Sigil, they laid off the web design team leaving the barest minimum amount of people to maintain it. Then they hired a whole different team to finish Sigil. However they have 2 separate budgets, money for and from DnDB is not directly being channeled to Sigil, as that would actually be a FTC violation, instead they have a separate budget than can be increased or decreased based on what they need.

...that's a highly depressing way to put it. I think Dndbeyond is still better than other dnd websites, but I wouldn't lose hope just yet. With the 2024 rules come a slue of site updates, and hopefully one of these is going to be Homebrew classes.

Imma clear something up:
I'm referring to IT AFTER the firings.
Because if regular users like IamSposta and Cybermind can fix basic stuff really easily, so can any IT person, regardless of specialty, if corners aren't cut.
Corners are being cut, so we're likely not getting HB classes.
On a more serious note I think they should allow for homebrew classes. The main issue with the homebrew class idea is that it would take someone making not only the homebrew class but also making any subclasses that go alongside it. They'd have to at least have one sub-class to go along with the main class in order to match up with the format of the existing classes.

I think that that might be the main problem. It's more than likely they will add a button for whether there will be subclasses or not, because not all classes match the current format for classes (See: Lord of the Rings Roleplaying)
Are you very familiar with the current homebrew tools for making subclasses? Like not just you've made one but you've thoroughly tested how it works (or doesn't) on the character sheet?
Plenty of that stuff just doesn't work. Many of the workarounds hint at fairly hacked together functionality. Furthermore, plenty of existing, official material for existing classes has not made it into the code.
I'm not trying to be pessimistic. But speaking on my experience with the homebrew tools and being a developer myself, I'm pretty certain they'd need to completely rewrite the code to allow for homebrew classes, and that's not going to happen without a big, focused effort. They are focused on other things right now.
Also, it's super early in this edition cycle. They need us to be hungry for content so they can sell new subclasses in new books. Even if they had the resources, I think homebrew classes at this point would be a bad business decision.
All that being said, it does seem they're adding 3rd party classes at a much faster rate than I think anyone expected. That could speak to increased functionality on the back end, or it could just reflect an effort to make connections with these particular 3rd parties to draw in their communities.

It definitely seems like a lot of new stuff, I agree. When the illrigger came out I thought it would be a long time for a new class like that, but then of course the "classes" of the lord of the rings rp book. The illrigger, from what I've seen, seems to fit well with dnd, filling a niche that, admittedly, as cool as it is, could have been filled with subclasses for existing classes. Yes more classes are definitely needed to fill niches, the artificer for example. A niche that would need its own class would be a non magical/divine/spiritual/etc. healer. There are niches that need classes, but most can be filled with a subclass.

My homebrew subclasses (full list here)
(Artificer) Swordmage | Glasswright | (Barbarian) Path of the Savage Embrace
(Bard) College of Dance | (Fighter) Warlord | Cannoneer
(Monk) Way of the Elements | (Ranger) Blade Dancer
(Rogue) DaggerMaster | Inquisitor | (Sorcerer) Riftwalker | Spellfist
(Warlock) The Swarm
some elaboration would be uh... useful. no idea what im polling for
