l know that red, blue ect dragons are evil and gold, silver ect are good, but does a red dragonborn have to be evil/worship tiamat? does a gold DB have to be good/worship bahamut?
on a side note,if the answer is "no, scale colour does not effect alignment" then what about if,say,a red dragonborn were to become a dragon (like with a wish spell or true polymorph) would it become evil then? l ask cause l have a dragonborn who's main goal is to become a dragon (or as close to one as it can) and right now its gold, but i think red is cooler, but i dont want him to be evil.
IIRC dragonborn were created as a slave race for the dragons so don't worship them, in fact despise them. So a dragonborn that wants to become a dragon would be ousted from dragonborn society.
Even the metallic dragons they dislike as they metallic dragons didn't free them from the chromatics.
The scale colour of dragonborn tends to be a brown due to years of non inbreeding even if there breathe weapon is that of a certain colour.
Lastly your character is your character. Barring effects such as the Balance card from The Deck of Many Things, which flips your alignment, you would still be a good character.
ah,thanks, l thought my alingment would not change but wanted to be sure. that other stuff is news though. l am thinking that my DB's backstory is that it was raised in a orphanage with humans, elves ect,but he was the only Dragonborn,so he would not know what most dragonborn would do,but he has read about dragons and thought they were cool and as a result, wants to be one. he is a draconic bloodline sorcerer cause dragon wings and cause his parent/was a polymorphed gold dragon but his non dragon parent (who might have been human lf a dragon and a human can make a dragonborn) was forced to give him up (hence the gold scales,he is a 1st generation dragonborn with almost pure dragon dna)
(though,lf l wanted a red dragonborn, maybe the conseption would be...less then consensual, and the abandonment would be more willing.)
There is a creature called a half-dragon, you could ask your DM if you can have a minor reskin to be one of these.
The commoner wouldn't really know the difference between the 2 and all the racial trait for the dragonborn still fit.
The info below is from Rise of Tiamat, what you are describing really seems to fit nicely with this.
"When a dragon in polymorphed form mates with another creature, the union sometimes produces half-dragon offspring. The result is a creature that combines the essence of a dragon with the form of its original race. Half-dragons have similar features and appearance, gaining special senses, resistance to destructive energy, and a breath weapon.
Draconic Nature. Half-dragons are incapable of having natural born offspring. Those that wish to propagate must find other ways to do so, almost always involving magic. By way of compensation, half-dragons are blessed with long life. Barring unforeseen misfortune, a typical half-dragon’s life expectancy is twice that of its nondraconic line, so that a half-dragon human might live more than a century and a half.
Half-dragons inherit personality traits common to their draconic heritage, so that half-gold dragons are often shy and secretive, while half-copper dragons are impish and playful. Half-green dragons are deceitful, while half-white dragons are often dim-witted brutes. These traits are tempered by a half-dragon’s other lineage, but greed, arrogance, and paranoia are qualities that even good-aligned half-dragons often possess."
The only real physical/mechanical difference between a dragonborn and a half-dragon is 60 feet darkvision, 10 feet blindsight, and a tail (and sometimes wings, I would make it a feat). Half-dragons' alignment and personality are also more influenced by their Dragon heritage.
half dragon race? what book is that from? they have tails? that is the only problem i had with my DB (l was thinking of useing a wish spell or constantly using minor illusion).
so the only (statical) difference between a DB and 1/2 dragon is the 1/2 dragon has better eyesight in the dark? and maybe a more lore reason to be one alingment over another? cool. as soon as l am able to get that race in my d&d beyond character maker l will change my DB into a half dragon. (or maybe ask the dm if something could happen in game to make it happen. ie that 1 hour dragon blood bath l read about) THANKS!

They are technically not official playable races. Their information in the monster manual.
yeah,l found that out after posting. on the bright side l think l found a new race to put in my top 10 fav dnd races. (at the moment my plan is to get my dragonborn to do that blood bath thing to become a half dragon, thus growing a tail and getting darkvision. the wings can be gotten from its draconic bloodline sorcerer power when lt gets to the right level). this ritual ls also perfect for another character l made that ls a elf and obsesed with learning so doing this will make her elven life span even longer and make her more powerfull. thanks for bringing this race to my attention.
There's the thing to remember about alignment: Your actions determine your alignment, NOT the other way around.
Well, okay THE thing to remember about alignment is to ignore it and just play your character, but if you have to use it, remember the first one up there.
They are not a player race in any book but they appear in the "Rise of Tiamat" adventure as a monster to fight.
I'd suggest to your DM a custom feat that gives you darkvision and maybe the 10ft blindsight. it would be a lot easier than trying to make a whole new race for just one trait.
Edit: You posted a reply whilst I was typing but this way you could be a half dragon from the start and just grow into your vision as you age.
In 5e PHB (I'll read up on direct links eventually), "some Dragonborn are faithful servants to true dragons." But 5e goes on to say that some are soldiers for other people or not really affiliated with anything or anyone.
It makes sense for a Dragonborn paladin to favor Bahamut, but there are no requirements for it. 5e has many suggestions but few requirements from a roleplay angle.
I know of a dragonborn that was magically converted from a Human by a ritual from his paladin order. His order worships some kind of purple cow, though. (Yeah. A lot of that character doesn't make a lot of sense, but that character's view of the world is quite a bit more simplistic than most. He might not even have the right deity for all we know so far. The character might have made some erroneous assumption, which could have led to his exile-until-atoned quest, but who's to say at this point?)

I would say that if you had a Red Dragonborn and then turned into a full Red Dragon - you're alignment can remain or be whatever you wish - but you'd have to deal with literally everyone assuming you're evil. Wouldn't want to give the wrong impression and end up on the wrong side of another adventuring party.
Player characters generally have choice, with notable exceptions (lycanthropy was one once upon a time). But if you have a setting like Eberron, then even the Dragon's alignment is up to the purview of the DM.
But otherwise, bias is still bias. If all Red Dragons act evil...well expect knights in armor to come to claim your head for their wall.
Remember that Dragonborn do not show the clear delineation of color types that the true dragons do. Most look brazen or bronze, with an exceptional few bloodlines maintaining the brilliant hues of true dragons. But regardless of where they fall on the spectrum, they have the choice of what kind of person they want to be.

Oh and being a half-dragon you also get a tail. Which for me is a bonus :-P

when the time comes for me to actually play this character,l am sure me and the dm can work something out.

Dragonborn scale color does not effect alignment. In fact, alignment doesn't actually effect anything. Its a role-playing guide, nothing more.
So sure, your player can eventually become a red dragon, but not be evil. Exceptions exist to pretty much every monster alignment.

Which dragonborn color is the strongest?
None; there’s no “strongest” iteration of PC races
