It was mentioned in some of the articles that there would be paid content. Also that you wouldn't have to buy everything only the class you are playing for instance. What about the DMs will we have to buy everything or pay a subscription? I already have purchased all of the books, miniatures and adventures. I am not willing to pay for a subscription to do what I can do already (and have been doing for years).
This is why I don't use fantasy grounds. I will not pay every month for anything like this. Not all people who play D&D can afford it.
This is something I am curious about as well. I've purchased the books, but also purchased everything for Fantasy Grounds as having all the tables and rolls setup is really great for getting characters made and running combat when everybody cannot be in the same room at the same time. Hopefully they are able to clear up how access to content will be managed.
Not only that but there are plenty of apps out there now that have all of the content for free. Why should I pay for any of it? I'm asking this not to be difficult. I WANT to use this service. Sell me on it.

I'm curious if they'll add items from books outside of the core 3 to the compendium.
For example, will we see Volo's Guide versions of the different Gnolls?
When I was at the DM's panel at ECCC, they talked about how this site/app would be a good way to reduce your "book weight" when you go to DM games, since you won't have to lug around 90 lbs worth of books & adventure sheets.
Since many of us have already purchased PH, DMG, MM, Volo's, etc... will there be a way to access that information? What about stuff from Curse of Strahd, or Yawning Portal?
Yeah, they really need to make this right and worth it for us. We can't keep paying for the same info. Once for paper, once for phone app, once for online-roleplay and now here? This is my biggest concern. Hope they make it right.
Like those above most of the content so far I already have access to through Roll20 or the massive collection of books I own. As a DM, what benefit is there by using this service when I can already own all the reference material?

But I HAVE supported the hobby! For decades I have purchased every book and trinket that has come out! But like the Star Wars movies how many special editions can I buy before I say I am fine with what I have?

Ultimately, buying it again is for convenience sake. I agree that DM's having to re-buy EVERYTHING could be ridiculous (it depends on the pricing) but the reason we buy new editions or apps or digital versions is to make our lives easier. Someone happy with an older edition in physical book form can just keep playing that edition. No shame in it
I totally understand that it's a different beast to offer material from the books in an app/digital format. To that point, I'm more than willing to pay for Tales from the Yawning Portal in both book & Roll20 formats, so that I can play both in my Monday night table top game & my Wednesday night online version.
However, I'd love for there to be some middle ground. A discount code for the app version of the material that we have in the books that we've already purchased, or something.
it depends on if D&D Beyond becomes a virtual table top or not. If not, and it is just a convenience website, then it is of little use for me, but I can see how it could be useful to others if there is a cheaper subscription option. If it is going to be a virtual table top, then it will need to compete with Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds, both of which have the majority of the content digitized and integrated with tables to roll on, monster groups already setup with macros to roll hits and damage, and even maps with notes that you can black out for players.

That's what I'm looking for is pricing. A subscription would not be something I would do. Others may do this and be happy with it. It would cause me not to use the service if DMs were essentially penalized.
What if when you were DMing you connect or link to your players and have access to what they purchased while they are your players. That way you can essentially see what they see.

This would be great as well. Hopefully going forward you can get a one time use code when you purchase the book to use it here. If so, then I'd be more than willing to dump Fantasy Grounds and move to Wizards own product.
I'd be more likely to pay for every book if I could scan a code and "unlock" the digital content on a site like this, allowing me to keep a physical and digital library with one purchase... and that keeps me actively engaging on forums like this, and when these forums are high activity they attract new players. That's my dream at least.
I would be more interested in seeing the paid for "service" rather than material. What benefits are allotted from using this web/app portal than via other means?
This is what I'll be watching for; not a measure to repurchase readable content in digital form.

I like this idea alot! But what about those who purchased the books before now? A picture with you the book and your driver's license perhaps? HAHA

That "free" content is illegal. If you like it and use it, pay for it. It costs money to make and without your support, stuff doesn't get made at all.

It would also be quite interesting for 3rd party publishers either via DM's Guild or the open license to be able to offer content for use here.

Maybe, since they are owned by Amazon, all the extra content will be another Amazon Prime perk? (I'll keep dreaming)

I pretty much agree with everyone here. Some kind of discount or included version if you have the book would be amazing.
