Let's say I am running a game with 6 players, they could each have up to 2 characters (for a total of 12 characters) in the same campaign? But if someone else joined, someone else's second character would need to be dropped, right?
I have an example and I want to make sure it's correct.
Alice, Bob, and Eve are going to play D&D together. Eve has DMG and MM on Beyond and wants to DM. Alice has a Master subscription and PHB on Beyond. Bob has VGtM and SCAG on Beyond. Alice can set up a content sharing campaign and sets Eve as the DM. Now Bob can cast chromatic orb, Alice can be a Swashbuckler and wield a Sword of Answering, and Eve can pit them against a Kraken Priest.
Bob now gets a year long Master subscription for Candlenights. He can't share the stats for a Drow Elite Warrior with a content sharing campaign he sets up, but can still carry a Anstruth Harp in the new group.
Alice realizes that the campaign that Bob, Eve, and herself were playing hasn't been played for a few months because Bob is off playing with other friends. She deletes the campaign and Bob no longer has the Harp and Alice no longer has a Swashbuckler character.

Users will keep their characters with the equipment they got from that campaign. If they ever remove the equipment from the character they will not be able to get it back. Once a swashbuckler, always a swashbuckler.
So when they create a character, it's currently outside of the campaign, then later designated in it. If they wanted to play a content gated race or subclass, would they need to create incorrectly, join, and then edit to use the content?
Okay. Question; If I share content with a campaign, can everyone in the campaign use that content everywhere, or are they limited to using it within the confines of the campaign?
Also, are Hero Tiers no longer freeing up slots then?
The players in those campaigns can use/ share the content everywhere.
Hero Tier subscriptions no longer affect the content sharing for the Master Tier since we have drastically opened up its sharing capability (i.e. up to 36 people could share content with one subscription).
So, what I know is now obsolete? Good to know, bad to find out.
I have around 8 campaigns going on here, but there's a decent chance I have fewer than 36 players, so, can I set up 3 "content sharing campaigns", invite all my players to them, and have them be able to use all my content in the real campaigns?
What you describe should work. In the end, we're giving far more flexibility (and number of players/ characters) than what was originally shared.
We'll keep an eye on demand for adding additional campaigns in the future if needed.
I think this will be more key as the campaign management tools become more robust, and campaign planning starts to shift into your system. For right now, it's not a big deal, and I don't know how many people are in more than three campaigns, so I think the impact will be minimal overall, but I'd imagine adding to the subscription cost for each campaign, like $2-$3/campaign after the first three would be reasonable in minimizing the abuse while still offering flexibility for those that are in a lot of games. Being in eight games would be pretty expensive, as that would be an additional $10-$15/month (a total of $16-$21/month), but I don't know how many people will be in that situation. Perhaps sometime down the road, if there's enough demand, I'd assume you'd consider a fourth tier.
FYI, as part of the launch, the Join page for the campaign will be getting an update. A user can choose to join a campaign with an existing character (as it works now), or click a link to join the campaign first and get launched into the builder to then create a new character with access to that campaign's content.
That feels unintuitive. How about a "create character for this campaign" button that auto assigns?
That's a good idea! ;)
For all I know they've already come up with something to prevent having to create a skeleton character, joining with it, then editing the character in the campaign.
I'm still confused, if I am part of a content sharing campaign and another player has the DMG, can I make a character outside of any campaign (or in a campaign without anyone who has the DMG) that wields a Sword of Answering?

No, only that character in that campaign will have access to the Sword of Answering. However, as the user that owns that character, you will be able to see the full details of the Sword of Answering in the listings and also have access to the digital version of the DMG in the compendium.
Ok, so if I make a Swashbuckler in a content sharing campaign and another player has SCAG, (and I don't) I can access the character if that player leaves the campaign or the campaign is deleted?

I feel compelled to jump in and say how appreciative I am of the team's responsiveness to to the community. I was already very excited with all initial offerings/pricing, but since then it has only gotten better. Thanks Curse! Of course some people will never be happy about the pricing, but that is the way these things always go - I think it is reasonable, and the modifications make it even the better.
I only wish this were launching sooner, as I have sessions both Sunday and Monday. Can't wait to really start using this! Is there a set time to "go live"?
Is there any way to restrict what content is shared, e.g. Which books, races, etc?
Is there any way to hide things from search results? E.g. If I buy an OotA and my girlfriend will be DMing, I don't want necessarily to see it show up in my searches. Or is the only way round that toforgo the Legendary bundle and let her buy that book?

I would very much like those capabilities.

If the user that owns the content leaves the campaign, or the campaign is deleted, your character will remain as-is, until you try to modify something on that character that was SCAG specific. Meaning, if you changed from swashbuckler to assassin, you'd not be able to go back to swashbuckler. (Unless you join another campaign with that character and that campaign has access to SCAG).
I know it sounds confusing, but it will be more clear in practice.

It makes perfect sense to me. It's the system I'd use if I were in charge.

We have thought about building in the capability to allow the campaign members to decide what all content should be cross-shared. Like an opt-out by source ability. However, something like that would not be in before launch.

Two questions:
Is there any way to restrict what content is shared, e.g. Which books, races, etc?
