Will there be a way for me as a DM to create characters ahead of time in my campaign, then give ownership of the pregenerated characters to players who join ?
+1 to this idea
+2 to this idea. This tool could be really useful for certain campaign types, or for just having extra characters on standby for unexpected players. As a newer DM, I've been slowly building a repository of generic characters that I can use to have on hand for various reasons, and being able to just duplicate or transfer over those characters would be useful and way more convenient. It would also be good for a blind campaign, or if I wanted to make something with a very specific theme, like D&D-izing the Guardians of the Galaxy, or whatever.
It would be great for bringing in new players, you can have a few ready to go for them to choose from and sit down and play, rather than having to go through the exhaustive process of creating a new character
What about combat tracking, encounters/adventure building, campaign settings (pantheons, npcs, locals, maps etc.) are we not 'launching' half a toolset?
Will this stuff cost extra?
What timeline do we have before we start to see these key three components?
without them beyond is expensive reference tool. Don't get me wrong, I like what's being done, but we're still only half way there.
All tools that follow will be free.
So far a timeline has not been released. I believe we'll be hearing more about them soon though. It's a wise move to wait until you've seen everything else that DDB will offer, but you might be waiting quite a while for 'everything' to be out. The way that staff operates, the communication they have with their community, and the willingness to implement suggestions to improve the site and develop the tools has made me believe that D&D Beyond is going to be something even more amazing going forward. So I guess I'm all in... ;)

This is how I feel. Having watched it and participated in the beta since the start where I was incredibly skeptical and critical, I've come around to having faith in the devs here because of all I've seen of their response to feedback and hard work. I think they deserve the benefit of the doubt at this point, at the very least.

So, how does unlocked content interact with free subscriptions?
If I unlock content, and am in a campaign with other free subscribers (and nobody has a Master tier subscription), can I use my content in that campaign?
Can anyone else? I'm inferring that, without a master tier subscription, nobody else can, but a tiny bit uncertain because the earlier information was that unlocked content could be shared in a campaign, regardless of subscription level.
If that's not the case, again, with just freeloaders playing in the campaign, can only I see my unlocked content? Can nobody else see the monsters or items I've unlocked? Even if they're unlocked content is on my character sheet? If this is true, what's the point of unlocking monsters?

You wouldn't need to have the subscription but somebody in the campaign would have to have it. Then you can share your content if that person has enabled it.

So, without a master subscribtion in the campaign, Can free subscribers even see each other's unlocked content? Can a free subscriber make any use of the content they unlocked other than view it privately?

The point of unlocking monsters is mostly for DMs to develop encounters, just in the same way that most players don't own the monster manual. It'll also make it easier for us to homebrew them, because we can build them off the stats, and Curse is working on scaling tools to make it easier to make them appropriate for the party. There's not really a point for players to have the monsters, unless they would like that for their own sake, but that's pretty much how it works right now. That might change when/if Curse develops encounter tools, and especially if they have some kind of VTT integration (however that ends up manifesting), but I don't know exactly how that would manifest. Still, a lot of it is for DMs.

Not at this time. In this scenario, it would be of use for the free subscriber to use privately with their own character(s).

Without any kind of subscription, the only point is for character building for yourself, and any quick and cross-reference information. D&D Beyond makes it easier to drill down through the info you need without flipping back and forth through all the books, but that's about it. Worth it for some (myself included), not for others. A tool that's going to benefit DMs the most.
So, the Free Tier can't access public homebrew content... but what about the following scenario?
Let's say I'm a DM with the Master Tier. I've made a few private homebrew items for use only in my campaign. I've invited my players to the campaign but all of them are on the Free Tier. Via content sharing, as DM I can share all the sourcebook content I've purchased, but am I able to give my homebrew creations to my players' characters even though they are all on the Free Tier?
Is there any way to restrict what content is shared, e.g. Which books, races, etc?
Is there any way to hide things from search results? E.g. If I buy an OotA and my girlfriend will be DMing, I don't want necessarily to see it show up in my searches. Or is the only way round that toforgo the Legendary bundle and let her buy that book?
We have thought about building in the capability to allow the campaign members to decide what all content should be cross-shared. Like an opt-out by source ability. However, something like that would not be in before launch.
And if I'm DMing, will I be able to disable any material, including Basic Rules material?
We have heard this feedback and will likely include whitelisting sources in the future. It will not be in at launch.
This would be the same as having all the physical books at the table and letting the DM dictate to players what is or isn't allowed - for now, it requires table enforcement.
I'm worried my own searches too. For example I'm already getting freaked out every time I see an OoTA monster listed in the monster listing. Spoilers!
Maybe this was asked before, but if a player with the Master Tier Sub shares his content, and other Players use it, will this content be limited to the character/adventure/encounter editor or will he be able to see the search results too?

I read it to understand that as long as they have a character in a current (and approved) campaign they will be able to see all the purchased of other people in the same campaign.
To start I will be buying the 3 'core books' and Curse of Strahd. As long as I have the master tier subscription, all players that join in my campaign will have access to the content from all 4 books. Does that include the ‘campaign/reference book’? Or is it just the items, monsters, spells, etc?
Basically I'm wondering, is all the story/campaign stuff going to be fully accessible to all the players? I don't care if one of them does a search and comes across the Blood Spear, but I do care if they 'stumble' across what is going to happen in Vallaki.

Yes, this is correct.
If you have a character in a campaign, where the content has been shared with you, then you may access that content directly through the compendium and browse through it, as well as accessing it via the character tool.

Whilst I agree that, in your example, the DM has greater access to the tools, I think that all Players in a campaign with a single DDB Master Tier account actually BENEFIT the most. That is, all those free-tier players who have no game resources suddenly have access to a plethora of content they would otherwise not have. Which is the way it has always been with tabletop RPG's: the keenest player with the books steps up to GM and shares those books with the playgroup. Only DDB means they can all use those resources concurrently, 24/7, with the power of a universal search and cross-referencing.

That's exactly it. :)
I DM a game for friends and have a bunch of my own books.
One of my friends wanted to play something out of Volo's (which I don't have), so he bought that book and brings it to the game, so we all have access to that book.
D&D Beyond works the same way, which is really cool.
Ok so say I have a hero subscription, and create 7 characters. What happens if I let my sub lapse and go back to a free account with only 6 character slots?

Yeah, a 'transfer ownership' of characters would be quite cool.

Even a free tier can run a campaign and share all of his personal homebrew creations.
