Whispers of Dissent will be set in Baldur’s Gate and the surrounding area. This game will have plenty of downtime between adventures in an attempt to tie character backgrounds into the story and to accomplish personal goals for each player.
This game will have two DMs. We’ll both be interacting with PCs and driving the story. During the course of the game we’ll be moderating interactions between players while also driving the story through personal live (non-voice) sessions in discord. This makes it easier for PCs to stray from the main path, roleplay 1 on 1 encounters with other players, and helps to push the story forward while waiting for other players to post on the forum. Note: If one DM makes a decision, that decision is final. The goal of the game is to have fun while telling an interactive and exciting story.
Character Generation
Standard Array or 27 Point Buy options are available for Attributes
All characters start at level 1
All races/classes available on D&D Beyond will be permitted
Please keep all feats/backgrounds limited to non-homebrew.
Discord
Since this game uses discord for both in-character and out-of-character interactions, please keep the following warning in mind:
Please keep IC and OOC separate. Let's say Dan loots a corpse and finds a ring. Dan doesn't tell the other characters about the ring. Suddenly, Phil is rolling Investigation, OOCly knowing that Dan has a ring, but no IC reason to suggest Phil would know (we'll say Dan rolled a natural 20 on his Sleight of Hand check to conceal it). Or one player's character's actions upset another player, who lets that upset fuel their character's IG response. We fully believe in not letting your reactions to a situation IG impact you OOG.
Most of the times situations like this occur, we either don't realize we're even doing so or we don't truly mean it and are being sarcastic, getting caught up in the moment, etc. The problem is that sarcasm doesn't come off well over text. So please be courteous to each other, since the only things we see are the icon and name and not the person on the other side of the screen.
The discord server will have multiple channels with one such channel dedicated to out-of-character interactions. Please keep out-of-character chat to that channel. Finally, whenever an in-character session is going on in discord, one person involved in that session must post the interaction/roleplaying session on the forum.
Posting Requirements
Players are expected to post at least once a day. While the majority of us are not professional writers, we love to read good writing. If, for any reason, you are not able to post for a given amount of time, please let us know ahead of time. Both of us are moderators on D&D Beyond, so we have plenty of time to post and interact with the players. But please, we look for quality posts over quantity. Make them well-written and full of detail.
If you are consistently missing for extended periods of time without notice or warning, we will remove you from the campaign without notice or warning. It's not fair to the other players when we have to wait three days for an action from your character because you disappeared without any heads up.
Content Sharing
Content sharing will be enabled on this campaign. You are not permitted to use personal homebrew without DM approval. You may see some items in campaign sharing that are not available to normal users (additional classes and races). These options are not permitted to be used in this campaign. If at any time Staff tells us to disable content sharing for a pending release, we will be removing our campaign from the list. As moderators we will continue to view/edit your characters through your character’s URL if this occurs.

Story
Cradled in the crook of the Chionthar and often swaddled in mist, Baldur’s Gate clings tight to the granite bluffs that channel the river. Trade nursed, the city grew from pirates’ port to farmers’ fort to the bustling urban center it is today.
Generations have worn smooth the cobbles of its narrow streets, and tens of thousands have lived their entire lives in the long shadows of its walls. The city’s stone has soaked in the blood of acclaimed heroes and terrible villains. Alongside and atop such stains, nobles and commoners, rich and poor, have lazed and sweat, ruled and bled, as they’ve played out the stories of their lives - making Baldur’s Gate a place of history and a home to legends.
Whether you’re newly Baldurian, lived here your whole life, or have found yourself within its walls for the first time, you’ve heard the call to adventure. Newly started, a guild of adventurers is being established by Eldon Viscardi. Only recently arrived in Baldur’s Gate, Viscardi has heard the tales of treasure and adventure from Chult. Inspired by these tales and the gold that has arrived in ship-loads, he has decided that financing a group of adventurers is the quickest path to rebuilding his noble empire. The advertisement promises fame, gold, and power. Whether or not you’re aspirations are to attain these things, everyone's goals become easier with those rewards in-hand.
Baldur's Mouth Newspaper
Now you find yourself huddled around nearly a hundred others outside the Baldur’s Mouth’s establishment. Needle, the editor and founder of the Baldur’s Mouth, looks around at those assembled while at the same time multi-tasking the distribution and editing of Baldur’s Gate’s only running newspaper. Behind him, one of his many modron scribes skitters out to hand him a new draft of tomorrow’s paper. He looks it over, nods a few times to himself, and hands the paper back to the little construct. It skitters back in-doors, nearly tripping on the front step, and closes the door behind it. Finally, he turns his attention to the group of people assembled.
Around you are some of Baldur’s Gate’s largest assortment of characters, each with their own reason for answering the call to adventure. Those around you chatter nervously. What will be expected of them? A fight to the death? Last man standing wins? Or perhaps everyone will be lucky enough to join this new adventuring guild? Needle clears his throat while raising a hand, waiting for the crowd to quiet down. A hush comes over the potential adventurers, the air ripe with anticipation.
Note: Please do not post below. We will be using this thread as the in-game thread. Thanks!
Needle clears his throat once again, waiting for the chatter to stop. Before you stands a gnome, chewing on a pencil. The first thing you notice about him is his various piercings. One such piercing connects a gold chain from his nose to his ear. He seems focused on the task at hand, whatever that might be.
Once everyone is quiet, he places the pencil behind an ear and begins to talk. "Welcome, welcome. My, there's a lot of you! You're all here because you saw the ad in my paper, I assume. Of course you are!" As he talks, he begins to pace, his finger counting off people with each step. "Alright, we're going to cut to the chase. Mr. Viscardi needs some people for his brand new adventuring guild. So, his idea is to have a contest, of sorts. Win the contest, you're in! Easy peasy!" He claps his hands three times and a dozen criers begin to weave between the crowd. In their hands is a sack. They approach each person and ask them to draw one stone.
"We're going to divide you all into teams. Each team gets a list. Find all the things on the list and meet me at the Blade and Stars before morning. The team with all, or the most items on the list, wins!" One crier seems to be handing the list to the first person he sees of each particular colored stone. Once everyone has a stone and each team has a list, there's a hush that seems to form throughout the crowd. How do you find who else is in your group? Who has the list?
The silence is broken when Needle calls out, "What are you all waiting for?? Go!"
Immediately someone yells out, "Green!! On me!!" Others begin following suit calling out various other colors. The crowd is chaos for the first few moments as teams begin to gather together.
Lera saw her father draw a red stone first. Following suit, she reached into the bag, hoping random chance would be on her side this time. Her fingers closed around a stone, but at the last second she changed her mind and drew a different one. Red. Lera breathed a sigh of relief.
“Red, right here!” Lera used minor illusion to make her voice louder than it probably needed to be. Casting the cantrip again, she created a five foot tall red arrow right above her head, pointed at her and her father. The sorceress looked at her father with a huge grin on her face. “Isn’t this exciting?” She whispered to him.
Perrin was hoping that the choosing process would be non-violent. He breaths out a huge sigh of relief when he hears its a scavenger hunt. I can do that. He thinks. Most people are willing to give you stuff if you're nice and offer them some food. He is given a list of objects by a nice human male and then asked to pull a stone. When he reaches in and pulls out the stone he cannot help but chuckle a little. Red. Just like a cherry. He is so distracted looking at the list that he doesn't hear the Gnome shout "Go!" and first. He is quickly lost in the crowd. However, he soon finds his team when he looks into the sky and sees a red arrow. Using his small stature to his advantage he moves quickly between peoples legs to get to the red arrow.
As soon as he arrives at the arrow he sees two elves, half-elves, he's not too sure he's never been good at telling them apart. "Red! I'm on the red team and I have the list!" Perrin shouts showing the list and stone to his teammates. Once he has caught his breath he'll introduce himself "Perrin Cherrycheeks. Warrior of Yondalla. Here is what is on the list: Ginger hair from a bald man’s head, a Shimmering Shield, 1000gp diamond, a Space Hamster, another scavenger hunter’s list, a modron (but not one of Needle’s), a four-leaf clover bathed in Lathander's light, Treasure map?, Counterfeit coin, XXXL undergarments (men’s or women’s), A rank insignia from a Flaming Fist soldier, and a Kenku feather."
Looking at the stone in his palm, Singe frowns, his hair begins to dance. Oh hush, he thinks. He turns and attempts to shimmy through the crowd towards the red arrow.
"You all have red stones?" He asks to the small group assembled, "And wait, what was that list?"
"The relevant equation is: Knowledge = power = energy = matter = mass; a good bookshop is just a genteel Black Hole that knows how to read." - Terry Pratchett
"I have a red stone," says Koll in his baritone voice, walking up to the group with a puzzled look on his face. "This seems like a child's game. But I will do my best to help us win this task. Hmmm. I could try and snatch an insignia from a Flaming Fist, if someone helped me by providing a distraction. Maybe that's too risky; I do have a contact with shadier elements here in Baldur's Gate. Maybe help us get our hands on some of these things. Old ways die hard, but as long as I use them for good, right?"
Woe walks up behind the two elves. "I could perform - charm people into giving us things - provide distraction. Happy to help you, Koll, to get an insignia from a Flaming Fist. Better be quick with this one. Once they figure out that there are 100 adventurers, trying to rip things off their uniforms, they won't be to happy!"
There is a commotion on the other side of the yard. You all hear a loud squawk followed by a high-pitched scream of, "Don't you touch me!" All heads turn to see a Kenku adventurer, a few groups are approaching the poor Kenku.
One of the people in the group calls out, "Just one feather!"
Just as quickly as the Kenku drew attention to itself, it ducks down and runs in the opposite direction, right into an alley. A few groups follow after it.
"We'll need to go quickly. Let's split up. Singe, can you come with me? Let's follow that bird. With that we'll take the last 4 items on the list. Perrin with Koll, and Lera with Zamar? Let's run!!"
With that, Woe runs after the Kenku that vanished into an alley.
Over her shoulder she shouts back to the group: "Let's meet back here at the half way mark to see how we progress and how we can help each other!"
Agreeing with Woe's split up decision. Perrin asks Koll if he is okay with the first four items on the list.
"Okay, lets go find your brothers and see what he needs to get us what we need. I have a couple ideas for stuff if we need to be more creative. Lead the way."
Thinking about it Perrin then shouts out to Woe and Singe who are chasing the Kenku "Meet back up here when you're done or before morning!!!"
“Well,” says Zamar, “that happened quickly. I trust this is the kind of excitement you were looking for, my dear.” He sees Lera’s excitement and sighs. “Very well. Go red team.” He calls after Woe, “If you have the list, try trading with someone else! It helps them, but it helps us as well!” He then turns to Lera and says, “Where do we start?”
Koll turns to the halfling, Perrin. "Ok then. Let's find my contact and see if he can help us. He will help because he is my brother, but he may demand something since he is also a thief. I have no idea how we will get a diamond of such value without stealing it. My brother is quite disdainful of the new path I've chosen for myself, and he will certainly try to pull me back in. So we need to think of ideas that maybe don't involve stealing."
I lead the way toward the inn that is the hangout of my brother, Loro, and his gang that call themselves the Tower Wolves.
“I am generally quite generous with my earnings when I perform. Perhaps we could go to some of my regular haunts and see if any there are disposed towards us. What do you think, Daughter?”
"Um, Woe!" Singe shouts after the half-elf, "Someone should go with her. I'm a Singe by the way. Check the Hall of Wonders for a modron."
His red hair now dancing like flames, Singe scrambles through the crowd after Woe, whispering "Counterfeit coin, XXXL undergarments (men’s or women’s), A rank insignia from a Flaming Fist soldier, and a Kenku feather. Counterfeit coin, XXXL undergarments (men’s or women’s), A rank insignia from a Flaming Fist soldier, and a Kenku feather."
"The relevant equation is: Knowledge = power = energy = matter = mass; a good bookshop is just a genteel Black Hole that knows how to read." - Terry Pratchett
As Woe and Singe rush off to try to catch the Kenku, they keep an eye out for any stray feathers, but there are either none to be found, or other teams have already picked them up. They get to an alleyway, where six other prospective adventurers are searching.
"I saw him around here!"
"I think I saw him go that way," another says, pointing down the alley.
Without another word, the group dashes down the alleyway, leaving the area quiet once again. Singe is able to remember old fables about Kenku, and how they lost their ability to fly, but never lost their taste for being up high.
With silent footsteps Shanolia approaches the former thief and halfling from behind, gliding silently behind and watching their movement from just far enough to stay hidden. Once they move from the chaos the elf clears her throat - barely loudly enough for them to hear - and holds up a small red stone.
Perrin easily accepts the elf as being a part of this group. After all who knows how many people are in each group. Besides, all people are innocent to Perrin until they prove otherwise.
"Well come along then. We have about seven individuals in our group. We've decided to split up in order to cover more ground. We're responsible for getting a ginger hair from a bald man's head, a shimmering shield, a 1000gp diamond, and a space hamster. We're going to meet this one's brother who has some contacts to help us. Unless you just have a 1000gp diamond in lying about." Perrin laughs at his own little joke. "By the way my names Perrin, the human is Koll. And you are?"
Perrin asks inquisitively as they continue to walk towards the inn.
"My name is Shanolia." The elf responds with no hint of emotion. "As for your diamond, I am afraid not. The shield, however, may be another story entirely, if you don't mind a bit of danger."
Walking slightly behind the others, Shanolia slips the stone back into her pocket.
"Shimmering Shield, correct? I used to work with a Giant who was very fond of his shimmering equipment. Proud fellow, I doubt he'll part with it easily. That's where you come in."
"Woe," Singe says breathlessly. He nods at a ladder leaning against one of the buildings in the alleyway. He straightens, clutching a worn and scorched book in his right hand. He smiles warmly at Woe, "I don't believe I've introduced myself. I'm Ambassador Sin- oh, um, sorry, scratch that. I'm Singe Harown. I would bet our feathered friend went up that ladder. I suggest we do the same and take a diplomatic approach."
"The relevant equation is: Knowledge = power = energy = matter = mass; a good bookshop is just a genteel Black Hole that knows how to read." - Terry Pratchett
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Group 1
"Singe, nice to meet you. I am Woe Norvyre, sorry I just ran off. I thought this could really be our chance. And truth be told, I am also much better at diplomacy including persuasion and deception, than I am at running, catching and fighting. So I assume we'll have a similar approach. Well spotted btw!! Let's climb up! You first this time!"
Woe climbs slowly and stealthily (stealth: 18 ) up the ladder to not spook the Kenku if he is really sitting up there.

A dwarf with a canoe on his back? What could go wrong?

With silent footsteps Shanolia approaches the former thief and halfling from behind, gliding silently behind and watching their movement from just far enough to stay hidden. Once they move from the chaos the elf clears her throat - barely loudly enough for them to hear - and holds up a small red stone.
"I believe we are to be working together?"
