You all wake in the morning and it appears that one of you fell asleep towards the end of a shift. You smell the scent of blood and looking around you see Yeemik dead against the far wall of the cave. It looks like he was slashed in the throat so deeply that half his head is severed from his neck. Before any real panic can set in Jorje walks up to Murros and says, "Sorry boss, Yeemik was talking about trying to kill one of you in your sleep and looting you so he had to go. Can't have him hurting any of bosses friends, right? So what now you all headed to your town?"
"Thank you for protecting us Jorje, but before we head into town we need Sildar to check his notes, and see if he knows anything about this 'King' that has taken Gundren so that we can save our Dwarven friend"
Sildar, hearing you say this speaks up, "I see that you are all just ok with putting your trust in the man eating monsters in front of us, but they captured me, beat me within an inch of my life, and openly discussed how to eat me. If you want to keep them in your service that's on you but I'm going to keep what I know up here," and he taps his head, "until I'm safely in town. Once there I'm more than happy to tell you what I know."
[So I know that really only two of us are using this but as there is probably a lot of talking and RP coming up I figured I'd give it one more go.]
Murros and Sturm are standing before the shrine to Avandra, with a young Elf maiden speaking to them. She has long blonde hair and simple clothes, and has come out to great you after you approached the shrine.
"Well, what brings new faces to Phandalin? Its rare that we get visitors, and one born of a dragon at that."
"Ah, well I don't know if I would call this a holy site but I'm doing my best. It's really more of a place for the townspeople to come and vent their frustrations, and ask for aid. I do my best to maintain it but the town,"and she broadly motions towards the town with her hand, "doesn't really have much money to put into maintenance."
And she takes a moment to sort of look you up and down, not in a smirking judgey way, she seems more curious than anything.
"I hope you two don't take this the wrong way but you don't seem like the types to follow Avandra. You," and she points at Murros casually, "clearly follow someone else, Helm or Maradin I'm guessing?"
"You are correct, I am a follower of Helm, and I protect the innocent in his name. It's a shame that the town lacks the funds to properly maintain this site, you clearly care deeply for it, as shown by your hard work to maintain it"
"I do what I can, and to be honest I care more about the people of this town than a specific deity. Avandra was previously worshiped here so I continued to build on that. The town was actually beginning to work it's way back to a proper settlement; trying to fix themselves up you know? And then a few months these blasted heathen curs, the Redbrands, took up residence in the town and have been making everything terrible. It's been a challenging few months to say the least; I'm surprised you two haven't run into them yet honestly."
"The Redbrands you say? We actually met them on our way in, and had to pay an "Entry fee", which our friends weren't too pleased with, and now you're saying they've been making things difficult for the people living here since they appeared? What exactly have they been doing?"
"Ugh" and she stamps her foot on the group in a clear sign of frustration. "Entry fee, how unimaginatively deplorable; this town clearly isn't important enough to demand an entry fee. I'm sorry to say my two strong-men, that you were swindled, and you're unlikely to them sitting outside the city for a while. As to what they've been up to; the normal ruffian behavior. Extortion, protection fees, theft, roughing up the townsfolk, and generally taking what they want without paying. They've also managed to run off they last few adventuring types that came into town so I might be careful if I were you two. While you look capable of handling yourselves, I'm not sure the two of you could take on the lot of them."
She looks suddenly rolls her eyes and sighs, "Sorry about the outburst but they've been making life less than enjoyable for a while now. Regardless, my name is Garaele..." and she holds out her hand to you two...
Once the Innkeep had settled down and collected himself, a distant Hector slowly made his way across the room with a glazed expression on his face. Approaching the Innkeep he asked in a croaky voice, "How much for a two bed room?"
Pausing for a moment, as if he was unsure what he had been asked, the Innkeep replied, "Four silver for a normal room, one gold for a nice one."
Producing his coin purse, Hector lay down one gold and passed it to the Innkeep. Collecting his key and uttering a seemingly insincere thanks, Hector moved to return to Angel's side before stopping briefly, adding, "I would request that we be left alone for the rest of the evening- that includes from them, as well." as he gestured towards the rest of the party. With a confirming nod from the Innkeep, Hector returned to Angel and helped her to the room, locking the door behind them.

So room prices I told you would technically be true, but given what just happened when you ask him the Innkeeper is still slumped on the group and just says, "Just take whatever rooms you want. There's no charge...just......just tell me that you'll kill that monster if you ever get the chance. For all of us to weak to do it."
[Sorry, when you asked about room prices I didn't put two and two together at the time. This dude is not about to ask for money from you all.]
[Lmao no worries and fair enough, a slight edit then:]
When Hector hears this, he pauses for a moment before moving closer to the Innkeep, empathetically placing a hand on his shoulder if he would allow. "While I wish I could make that promise to you, and make that creature pay. I simply cannot keep it, sir. You and I are very alike, and there are people who I must also prioritize protecting over doing the right thing."
As he says this, Hector glances over to the recovering Angel, taking a deep breath before speaking again. "Nevertheless, I thank you for this hospitality. If there is any way I could ever repay the favor, I would do so in a heartbeat. Good evening and be well."
With this, Hector rises again, offering to help the Innkeep to his feet if he wished. Otherwise, hecrosses the room back to Angel, and after insuring she would be able to move, helps her to the designated room. Hector then returns to the Innkeep, requesting that they not be bothered by anyone for the rest of the night- including any members of the party.
Without objection, Angel went with Hector to their room and settled down on one of the beds. Her gaze fell to the floor, unable to look at her brother as she spoke: "I saw how you were looking at Sturm, but you know it's not his fault. He couldn't control himself," she said softly, resting her hand on top of the bandages, "So whatever you're thinking, forget about it. You can't protect me alone and we need allies. They might not be the best, but they're better than no one. You know I'm already in a dangerous situation, so we should try to keep potential allies close and not distance ourselves!" While getting worked up, Angel built up the courage to look at Hector in the eyes before tearing up and going back to staring at the floor. "I'll try to stay closer to you, but we can't leave yet."
With this, Hector rises again, offering to help the Innkeep to his feet if he wished.
The innkeeper will accept your help up, take a deep breath of air and say, "Thank you and I understand." and then slowly starts moving around straightening up the place.
Created for any RP discussions outside of the game time in Roll 20.
