Dmg: 7 Dex save 12 for half
Azbara's save: 12 + 3 = 15 he takes 3 dmg
Azbara Jos was already angry and now retaliates, but first he looks around good and makes sure he selects the Gargoyle and Rath Modar for his Sculpt Spells feat. He moves back a bit from Zale and casts Fireball!!!
DEX saves for all! (DC 13)
Calvin's save: 10 He fails and takes 14 fire dmg (he's looking hurt).
[[ OOC: If full damage was 14 for Calvin, Khessa, takes only 3 fire damage: 14/2 = 7 because she saved successfully and 7/2 = 3 thanks to Eric's Warding Bond. This damage is subtracted from her Arcane Ward (which she had activated at the Lodge and is still active because Khessa has not taken a Long Rest since that moment). The Arcane Ward had 10 HP, now 7 remain. ]]
Round 1
Khessa was ready to fight and rolls to the side with excellent reflexes, avoiding the worst of the explosion of fire unleashed by Azbara. The flames, partly avoided, partly dampened by the mystical protection that her beloved dwarf had previously cast on her, partly absorbed by the esoteric protection that she, as an Abjurer, had activated previously, at the Lodge, have practically no effect on her.
"You'll have to do far better than that..." the blonde arcane warrior taunts him. She then points her Greatsword at the ground, at a precise point and winks at Eric: "You know what to do!"
The tall adventuress then lunges at Rath, while her blade already blazes with eldritch green flames...
[[ OOC: The purple circle is the area that Silence would cover, if centered on the point indicated by Khessa. By placing Silence like this, it should be easy for two party members to block Azbara's path while Khessa holds Rath in place...
Anyway, Khessa uses her Movement to position herself near Rath (see purple arrows) and her Action to attack him with Green-Flame Blade ]]
Khessa takes advantage of Rath's moment of daze and pain as he receives the blow and she takes one hand off the hilt, attempting to grab the opponent and lock him in his current position.
[[ OOC: Using Action Surge to act again: Khessa uses the Grapple action - if Rath wins the contest and is ungrappled, Khessa will use her reaction to cast Silvery Barbs with her Fey-Touched feature to make Rath repeat the roll (and hopefully fail) giving in the process herself advantage on the next attack roll, ability check, or saving throw she makes, as per spell description. ]]
Action Surge - Khessa's Athletics check to Grapple Rath: 21
The check is contested by the Rath's Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check (he chooses wich to use). Remember that Khessa uses Silvery Barbs as reaction to make he repeat the roll, if he succeeds.
OCC: he takes 7 damage halved by his fire resistance, so he would take 3 damages. Since Khessa has taken no actual damage tanks to his magic guard, I think Eric also don't take the 3 damages from warding bond
No, Khessa still holds Rath. When Eric casts Silence, he will be unable to leave the area of effect. And Azbara used up 2 3rd level slot. Not complaining.
Thinking about it: just a thing Khessa does differently, after getting counterspelled: during her movement, she gets distracted by Azbara's counterspell and clumsily leaves Rath an opening for an Opportunity Attack.
Rath can do his Opportunity Attack against Khessa, if he likes. Why not to take advantage of such a clumsy opponent, after all? 😉
So Khessa does not grapple Rath? Or does that happen during the movement and before the grapple?
That happens during the movement and before the grapple.
This is the sequence as I imagine it:
1) Khessa covers her Greatsword in green flames and starts moving towards Rath
2) Azbara counterspells Khessa's cantrip
3) Khessa pretends to be distracted by Azbara's Counterspell and gives Rath the chance to attempt an Attack of Opportunity while she moves towards him.
(She hopes that Rath will seize the opportunity without thinking too much... After all, it is a sudden event, which leaves more room for instinct and automatic reflexes, than for thoughtful reflections... and Khessa should have gotten on his nerves quite a bit, during the prologue to the fight...)
Khessa tries to lure Rath Modar to swing at her with his Staff, but something is wrong. He doesn't take the bait. A slight panic takes hold of Khessa. Maybe he doesn't want to use his precious staff for hitting people? Or did he see through her ruse? Or... the answer comes as she tries to grab the Red Wizard: her hands just go through him! An illusion! As the illusion dissipates she hears Rath laughing: Hahaha, this is your prodigy, Azbara? So easily fooled! This is going to be ridiculously easy!
Rath raises his staff and a great wall of fire appears between Khessa and Rath. Calvin is caught in the middle of the wall and makes a DEX save: 11 That's a fail and he takes 21 fire dmg. Calvin is down.
The wall is opaque so Khessa doesn't see Rath moving away. Obviously Khessa is on the side that deals 5d8 fire dmg when she ends her turn within 10 ft of the wall.
Calvin's death save: 8 (fail)
The Gargoyle rushes to Khessa and attacks her with his claws followed by a bite: nat 2 and 11 + 4 =15 (that still misses). He ends his turn within 10 ft of the wall of fire and takes 15 fire dmg.
Next up: Eric
[OOC: it was a good try Khessa. Don't forget you get your slot back]
"I am the keeper of the holy fire, You have no power over it here, wizard!" the dwarf exclaims, and then waves his right hand toward the wall of fire, and while he moves his hand along it, the fire wall dissipates. (as an action Eric casts Dispel Magichis Wisdom check is 17)
Then with the other hand Eric tosses a Flaming flying hammerat Azbara as bonus action ( to hit 12, dealing 12 damages if hits)
Thereafter Eric uses what remains of his turn to move, getting in melee range with Rath
