"Oh, hey!" Sam calls out to Ömertyr, immediately feeling bad. He had not meant to leave the Giant alone and without a translator for so long. He thought it would be an easy retrieval but grabbing the rug without damaging it further proved a slow task...
Sam speak with Ömertyr in Giant for a bit. It is not an overly long conversation but it always seems much longer when you don't speak the language and thus are on the outside waiting, he supposes. Eventually he looks to whichever of the others are nearby and explains what was said.
"Ömertyr has scried and seen what he could see. He admits that he was partially hoping we were wrong but he has now seen for himself and it is much as we said. He saw Tontritor dead, her body corrupted with the false life of undeath. He saw her with chains around her arms and legs and with extra holes in her head..." Sam explains. "Holes with something embedded into them. I asked if he thought there was any hope of saving her from her state, like I had been...."
Sam looks around a bit before finishing. "He didn't rule it out," Sam says finally to try to soften it, "But without so much as actually saying it... He doesn't think so."
Vin takes the crystal ball back from Ömertyr and waits patiently to hear what he saw. Well, mostly patiently, the look on the giants face hinting at the fact it wasn't good news.
As soon as Sam returns he comes back across to wait for the feedback.
"Extra holes in her head?", he repeats quietly shivering involuntarily and wondering what they could be for, and what might be embedded in them.
"Can you also ask Ömertyr if he saw anything else around Vox Tontritor? Anything to show exactly where she is being held? Or if he heard anything?", he asks of Sam.
He turns to the others, "If Ömertyr has seen enough of the location, he might be able to use the potion of clairvoyance I purchased. That would allow him to see and hear that location, although it could be detected. And he might not understand what is being said, although I have one potion of tongues left too. I was saving it to help us persuade the Djinn's though".
After another moments thought, "If all that is possible after a visit to a simple potion shop though, imagine the resources the Ginro must have!"
Elthana turns to Muir, "You think you know where the phylactory is held? Or at least an idea? Who's book are you reading? I wonder why they were on this island." Turning to Sam (at some point), "Can you ask Omertyr what this island is? Is it in proximity to anything of note?"
Hearing the giants report on the scrying puts Elthana deeper into a state of darkness. She had a small inkling of hope that maybe things weren't as bad as they thought... they are. She waits for the giant to answer her friends questions, having nothing to add herself.
Muir shakes his head no "I was only conjecturing this lost mage vault as a possibility. I don't know if it is there for certain. But if we are to defeat her, we need to destroy the phylactery wherever it is."
As Sam translates a few of the questions, Ömertyr answers as best he can. The place Vox was chained in seemed like a large hall, black stone, a staircase behind her, and small boxes lining the walls around her. He isn't sure what the boxes are but the ones he saw were about the size of a common humanoid. He heard nothing but the rattling of vox straining against her chains. But is unsure about anything else seen or heard.
He speaks of the rock that the group find themselves on, it is a common enough occurrence in their that crystals form either from fractured bits of the main isles or formed from the minerals in the vapor streams attaching to falling objects. These small offshoots are too small to be homes really, and also their trajectories are uncertain, and therefore not mapped by the navigators. He explains that stopping here could help their journey or hinder it as he doesn't know whether they are traveling toward or away from Shenoh's path, but he does know the general direction and has been keeping an eye on it.
As Sam translates these from Ömertyr and back to the group he realises that this might simply instill more questions in the group, but instead of staying to answer them Ömertyr sits down, leaning against his pack and waits for the Rocs to have rested up properly.
Muir looks at Sam wondering if he didn't ask his question out of forgetfulness or if he had wronged him in some way and spited him.....Muir just lets it go....He knows his questions aggravates just about everyone..."Well it doesn't seem good for Vox but perhaps the chains clanging is Vox still having some semblance of her old self. It is unfortunate he didn't answer the question about the things in her head" Muir figures mentioning his unanswered question was enough to keep it in the mind of the others "If those are.......no no she wouldn't....but what a way to keep it safe if she did....."Muir muses out loud to himself
Sam would press on the embedded things with or without Muir's passive aggressive reminding/mentioning - Gewyn's connecting the idea of the things being embedded in their head to Sam's necklace embedding itself in his chest is an uncomfortable connection that he would like clarified... Though he doubts Ömertyr will really be able to tell for sure just by a vision vying scrying.
"It may make sense to make your biggest, strongest ally your phylactery," Sam says in apparent agreement with Muir, "unless you're also using that ally to fight and thus making them a target. If I had such a weak spot I would look to keep it from being a target, no matter how strong I believed it to be. I'd look to make it something unassuming and unremarkable... unless of course I was able to make it something so precious to my enemies that they would never consider attacking it."
As Sam presses the question of the protrusions, Ömertyr points out on his own head where he saw them; forehead, each side, one at the back and one on top, each a triangle of something solid, but it was dimly lit there, and he's unsure of what material these things were made of.
"Makes sense, Muir. I mean, why chain someone up if you aren't worried they could escape. Unless Nivara is simply worried that undead Vox will just zombie walk out of the castle", Vin muses.
He thinks about the humanoid sized boxes that Ömertyr had seen.
"I wonder how the kobold bodies made their way to the castle. If we could smuggle ourselves in a shipment, perhaps we could infiltrate the castle and get to Vox Tontritor and free her. I still think she is our biggest potential ally, and even if that does not happen, denying Nivara her power might be just as important".
"Of course he did," Sam answers without even relaying the question. "There was holes in Vox's head and they are undead... Of course they are a ruin!"
"Oh, errr, I see..." Sam sputters a bit after the question is undoubtedly clarified. "You see the Giant word for rune and ruin and nearly identical and thus my confusion, yes? Well then..." And after a moment of grumbling he finally asks Ömertyr the question.
Elthana contemplates traveling to Nivara inside one of those humanoid shape boxes and shudders. Immediately she is greeted with the nightmares she has of digging her way out of her what... her clone box? What the hell do you call it?
Frustration and anger gets the best of the shadow elf and as the others talk about what they are up against on the island waiting for the Rocs to heal, Elthana gets up and heads over to the large birds, hoping that trying to communicate with them will get her to calm down.
Hootie flies off Elthana's shoulder and gives an annoyed squawk (can owls squawk? or just hoot?) when she gets too close to the Rocs. Hootie has no desire to become a small snack for the monsters!!
Meanwhile, Sam relays that Ömertyr didn't notice any runes. That it is possible there were some that had been around since the place was built but surely nothing new that caught his eye.
"The reason for asking this was the phylactery would be made with runes...If there were none on Vox or around her then hopefully she is not the phylactery...."
Gewyn's body begins to morph and shorten, taking on a slightly canine face as he becomes a kobold. "To your idea, Vin," he says pointing with a now oversized and drooping sleeve. "I think I could make a pretty convincing dead kobold. If we do get in, I may be able to get a decent look at the place. Plus I think a few of us can become invisible. It's not a bad idea. Sneak in, use a forward lookout party to find Vox, and then coordinate our approach. We can also see if the phylactery, if not Vox, is elsewhere nearby."
Vin beams at Gewyn, happy that someone has taken an interest in his plan.
"You sure could, Gewyn. And I would be happy to be part of the forward lookout party too. Neferox could remain and give us a means to communicate, and I can summon her to me when the time is right. Unless you all want to come", he adds excitedly.
A small growl escapes Neferox's throat at talk of them splitting up, and she looks at Vin with eyes narrowed.
Another thought occurs to him, "If I can get my hands on a herbalism kit, I might be able to concoct something to make us seem dead. You know, slow our hearts down or something. I could use a bit of the mornlyf to help", he adds, looking across to Muir hoping the loxodon might offer his brain power to the endeavour as well.
"And perhaps Morris would help too, if I can get his attention".
