From your aerial view, the forest is truly a titanic landscape. Trees stretch as far as the eye can see. The canopy of treetops weave a fabric that is impenetrable to the naked eye and the lower area near the tree trunks appears dark and foreboding. One distinct feature you can discern is a stark contrast between the northern expanse and the rest of the forest. It could be that the region is lower terrain, but the north seems darker and closer to wetlands and swamp than the verdant greenery to the south.

A page greets you outside of the tent provided by Talvus. He moves you quickly through the grandiose outer camp where the statuesque figure of the Auxiliary Commander waits. He seems aware of your approach, but makes no move to acknowledge anyone. His gaze is fixed on training downhill from where he stands: five ranks of ten dwarves slam repeatedly into a sled as wide as their ranks and weighted with dozens of sandbags and large stones.
Next to the commander, horses with packed saddlebags stand ready for each of you. "Impressive, aren't they?" The commander muses to no one in particular, "Halfshield's soldiers may be mercenaries, but they could grind down the king's men-at-arms with only half the numbers." A trail of broken and torn dirt shows the dwarves have pushed their sled three times the depth of their formation already and show no sign of relenting. Standing in the sled, Halfshield's presence is immediately known by the constant barrage of hybrid insulting motivation he beats into his men.
The dwarf calls a sudden, "HALT!" to his formation before leaping over the front rail of his sled. His formation takes three lock-step paces backward and holds steady, as though the training dummies may counterattack at any moment. Their commander quickly grabs the top of shield in the front rank and yanks it forward. The dwarf stumbles befor he is pulled forward and those surrounding him move as well to hold the line. "Do ye think this is fer fun? Think ol' Halfshield is jus' doin' it all fer shits? Nay, ye are built of bedrock, and must fight as it! When I say to hold a line, ye hold a damn line!" Now, HOLD!" Bründir slams his shoulder into the dwarf's shield and presses against the throng. The line holds for a moment, but another shove by the dwarf drillmaster causes the line to start folding. Rank by rank, the formation folds slightly until the center stands 10 feet behind the first flanking ranks. Halfshield finally relents and returns to his sled, the battered formation straightening behind him, "We'll do this all day if needed. Again! Push!"
The dwarves continue their methodical press against the training sled as their commander screams for more. Talvus smiles, "They are terrifying to have on the other end of your spear. Your supplies are ready. The sooner you leave, the sooner our issue of moving unharassed is resolved."

“Well, that’s certainly encouraging. I’m glad to know we have them on our side, otherwise I might be worried. One question though. They seem to very experienced in combat, but how do they hold up against a magical assault? The lizardfolk clearly have an attachment to nature through their shamans.” Solomon says as he gets into his horse.
The commander smiles reassuringly, "If you'd like to test them, then by all means. I have never known them to take an assault and break ranks without command."

Elon is perplexed and amused at the thought of seeing someone try to break a military line. In his experience, magic is useful and handy but has a lot of limits. But, alas Elon is ready to move on so that he can finish this little romp in the woods and get back to his studies.

“Eh, no, no, that’s fine. Honestly, I’d rather not have the dwarf staring me down. Maybe another time.” Solomon says as he looks upon fantasy Napoleon.

"Impressive lot. Best make sure their ready for attacks from long range too." Evelyn shakes her head. "Seen a few who think they can beat a skilled archer with just a sword or a spear, hope you lot won't be counted among them." She mounts her horse, giving the creature an affectionate pat on the neck. She fixes her goggle firmly to her head and pulls her hood back up, covering her features once more.
