Roland scans the area for any clue of where their companion has gone, craning his ears for sounds, and looking around at the floor for any footprints or marks.
Backtracking, it doesn't take Roland very long to spot his silent companion; as he rounds the corner, he spots Nimble at the southern intersection of the tunnels, though it is difficult to be sure at first, as the half-elf is laying motionless on the ground, covered by a Large, thick, oozing yellow substance eating away at his skin. Distracted by Nimble's sudden disappearance, Tochi notices late that the rest of the party has backtracked.

Roland tries to sneak up on the creature (although he can't tell which way it is looking) and charges at it with both swords. He attacks wildly, trying to cut it to ribbons.

Upon seeing the body of his friend, Tochi struggles to contain emotion, then says:
"May the eternal life embrace your soul. May the Celestial blessing flow through your spirit. May the Primordial power accept you. We let you go, Nimble, friend of ours".
Only after saying this does he even notice the monster facing him. He charges towards the enemy, attempting to strike him with all he has. He will use the flurry of blows.

OOC: Keep an eye on the placement, Tochi is 75 feet away from the ooze at the moment (further back because of his nat 1 perception roll), so I'll hold his attacks until he's in range and assume he's using Dash for this round, and apply the melee attacks the following round.
Roland's sneak attack dice are doubled because of the critical hit, so he'll deal an additional 11 damage (36 total damage in one turn!). Stealth not required for advantage here because as an assassin he already has advantage due to attacking before the ooze has taken a turn.

The ooze consolidates itself, recognizing its attackers as they turn the corner and charge, but Roland is on it in a flash, plunging his swords through the thick substance. Clearly in pain, the creature begins to quiver, forming a large fist-like psuedopod that lashes out at the rogue. Still pulling his swords out, Roland twists away in time, escaping the punch by inches. Nemean sinks an arrow into it while Tochi dashes past him from the previous tunnel.
Sildar's attacks prove ineffective; the ooze simply reforms around his longsword as it cuts through, completely ignoring his assault.
OOC: Applying Tochi's attacks to round 2...
Tochi arrives as Roland frees his weapons, slamming his quarterstaff into the massive jelly. Shaking wildly, bits of the creature fling from it to the walls and floor as it slowly sinks, pooling out into a thinner liquid coating the still form of Nimble beneath it.
OOC: Each character has received 112 XP for defeating the ochre jelly.
OOC: I think all of it gets doubled. Pretty great for one round.
Assassinate PHB, pg. 97
You have advantage on attack rolls against any creature that hasn’t taken a turn in the combat yet, and any hit you score against a creature that is surprised is a critical hit.

Nemean walks over and places his hand on his companion’s shoulder, “Roland... I don’t think that... I think he’s already passed. I’m sorry.” His voice trails off and he bows his head and recites a short prayer in his traditional tabaxi tounge, he lets a long moment of silence pass as he mournes his fallen comrade.
OOC: Only the first hit was a critical (the nat 20) because the ochre jelly wasn't surprised (as good as Roland's stealth roll was, it doesn't see like most creatures), but the rolls were at advantage because Roland acted before it had taken its first turn.
Roland approaches a grisly sight. Where the ooze had coated Nimble has eaten away at his skin, and left him half-burnt and dead on the floor of the tunnel.
"I've never seen an ooze that large. One that big clearly knows how to stalk its prey well. It was most likely lying in wait for one of us to separate," Sildar comments, reverently closing Nimble's eyes. "Let's not repeat that. This mine carries the dangers of hundreds of year of solitude."
Roland stops trying to revive his comrade, freezing in place as the realization dawns on him. "Yes... you're quite right." Roland agrees, his normally jaunty voice having dropped an octave or two.
"Too many have been lost, trying to stop this Black Spider..." mutters Tochi, "This must end... He must end... and we must ensure such an outcome. Let us proceed to him!"
Passing the branch to the left, the party continues north through the tunnel until it opens into a large cavern.
A still pool fills much of the cavern. The water is dark, revealing little of what might lie within. The shore of the pool consists of a thin layer of broken shells from strange, pale mussels, and a fishy odor hangs in the air. Another boom echoes throughout the cavern, a little louder than when you first entered the mine.
You've entered through the passage that leads south from this area, and a set of steps climbs up to the east. A sluggish stream flows out of the cave to the northeast.

Tochi will examine the stream, trying to see if there is any danger from it. If not, he will want to go up the stairs, but if there is any danger, he will want to deal with it first.
