You've all had the same experience. You woke up two days ago and found a package, wrapped in brown paper, outside the door of your room or tent. Inside you found a puppet and a note.
Inside the note, it says, "I have heard of you from the peoples. Maybe you not want to be puppet? Maybe you want to remove the one pulling strings (I know is marionette, but I not have one handy)? Maybe you want to end curse and restore Barovia? Come to my shop in Vallaki in two days, yes? Maybe we give devil his due?
P.S. Am Gadof Blinsky. Forgot to say earlier."
It is a strange message, a little too naive, a little too forthright. But you are intrigued and, therefore, find yourself outside the shop with a group of strangers. All are cloaked and hooded, as it is raining. There are few people on the streets, as dusk deepens. The shop window of Blinsky's store is filled with toys, many demonstrating questionable taste.
This cramped shop has a dark entrance portico, above which hangs a wooden sign shaped like a rocking horse, with a “B” engraved on both sides. Flanking the entrance are two arched, lead-framed windows. Through the dirty glass, you see jumbled displays of toys and hanging placards bearing the slogan “Is No Fun, Is No Blinsky!” As you enter, you see many shelves, filled with odd toys and other knick knacks. There is a sales counter and behind it, sitting on a stool, is a howler monkey in a faded tutu.
Eithne took off her hood as she entered, to get a better look, trusting that her brown hair, now so thick and long, effectively hides her elven ears. Her 6' height should do the rest, leading anyone to believe she is either a half-elf or a human with particularly chiseled features.
The half-open cloack reveals only skimpy common clothes, probably made from animal skins. And a harmonious physique, but one that is at the same time well sculpted by the wild life.
After looking around cautiously, the wild stranger furtively puts her hands to her temples, while the voices, the usual voices that have long shared her head with her, begin to speak all together in her mind.
'Where is the one who called us? Where is Blinski? ' 'There is not! It's a trap! It is surely the devil Stradh who discovered us wants to finish his job! Run Eithne! Run!' 'No, try to call him ...' 'No, look for him!' 'That puppet on the left... My Kamil had one like that when, when...' (a creepy memory makes Eithen shiver - but it is actually a memory of hers? Quite creepy it is, anyway)
'Should I really go looking for this Blinski?' Eithne finally manages to insert a thought of her own into her mind 'Maybe after all I trust a monkey more than a man...'
But a monkey, more trustworthy or less than a man, cannot speak anyway, so the wild stranger starts wandering around the room, with all senses alert, trying to pick up clues about the presence of the shop owner. In the in the meantime, without getting distracted by looking at them, she asks the others she has heard entering with her: "Are you here too because you are 'tired of strings'? And at least you know where to find Blinski?"
A bearded male dressed in Vistani colors enters the shop and pushes back his hood. You catch a glimpse of pointed ears under his long brown hair before he brushes it back to cover them. I did not expect so many others to be here, he thinks. Obviously this Blinsky has more influence than I gave him credit for. Or perhaps I am a fool for answering the summons. This would be the perfect opportunity for Strahd to swoop in and eliminate several of his enemies all at once.
He notes the tall woman dressed in animal skins, and nods to her."I am Nikolai," he says simply, displaying the vampire puppet. "It sounds as if you received the same note as I did. Blinsky's location is not a secret. The toy shop has been here for a long time. But I have never received a letter from him before."
He amuses himself by engaging in a staring contest with the monkey.
Frustrated that she is still not hearing or seeing anything that reveals the shop owner's whereabouts, Eithne turns her azure eyes to look at Nikolai.
'Male' she thinks to herself. 'Like the devil Stradh. Like the dusk elves, at the sight of which the voices usually begin to chorus in my head. So a potential source of trouble. I can't trust him. Besides... why is he staring at the monkey?'
"Unless you're thinking Blinsky is that monkey... maybe you could try calling him?" suggests the savage stranger "I have not found any traces of his presence..."
'... and I don't like it!' completes Eithne in her own mind, miraculously silent for now, wielding with both hands, as precaution, the greataxe she brought on her back.
Chara steps into the shop hesitantly, still not entirely sure what to make of this entire situation or the other people around her. Can she trust any of them? Well, they didn't attack her on sight at least, even though a simple hood and cloak do little to hide her hellish appearance.
A pair of long gold horns protrude from head, sticking out from underneath her hood, and it's impossible to hide the leathery wings on her back. Her cloven hooves make a distinct clicking noise as she walks into the room and pulls down her hood, letting a mane of silver hair cascade down her shoulders. She appears to be a devil of some kind, with dark blue skin and gold markings that could either be tattoos or a natural color pattern.
The devil-woman is of fairly average height, with an athletic build. She's dressed simply, with studded leather armor and a skirt... from under which protrudes a long tail that twitches nervously.
"So... does anyone know where this Blinsky guy is?" she asks as she walks through the door, producing the puppet from her travel bag. "I got a note and this creepy puppet from him."
Chara stops dead in her tracks as she sees that the elf woman has a greataxe in her hands and looks like she's ready for a fight.
Lucian had circled around the shop a few times before entering...he'd never been to this shop before so he didn't know what to expect. Yet...somehow this Blinsky had managed to contact him in spite of, well, his current living conditions. So, he figured it was worth checking out. Hesitantly, he enters the shop, staring wide-eyed at the monkey, and then at the strangers who'd already entered.
He is wearing simple, well-worn cloths with a thick strip of cloth as a belt. His arms and legs are wrapped in stripes of cloth, and though he has no shoes, the cloth is enough to protect his feet from the elements. His pointed ears and the blueish skin pronounces him an elf...though he appears no older then his early 20's.
He inspects the strangers, as if evaluating how much of a threat they were to him...then realizes that they must have received a letter from Blinsky as well...so perhaps he should greet them? After a moment, he approaches Chara and says, "Hi... I haven't seen you around before. Did you get a letter from Blinsky too?"Though he is a little wary, he tries his best to be friendly as well, "My name's Lucian. What's yours?"
..."Um... what are you going to do with that axe?"
Eithne is only now fully aware of Chara's demonic features. But these don't particularly upset her. Sure Chara looks much more demonic than Stradh, but the savage stranger is less afraid of a demoness who worries in front of a greataxe, than of a refined lord capable of exterminating a whole race on a whim.
Eithne therefore finds herself answering her sincerely: "Well, we get summoned here..." she starts counting on her fingers: she rises one "We know to plot against whom..." she raises a second finger (and she also can't hold back a shiver as some of the voices in his mind cry in anguish at the thought of their executioner) "... and when we arrive, there is only one monkey" a third finger up. "I don't pretend to understand much of this, but I understand at very least that I don't like it. We could just have fallen into a trap".
"My name is Eithne, by the way" she adds, finally realizing that, worried about the situation, she has not even presented herself yet.
Chara is pleasantly surprised by the stranger's greeting. She's more used to people throwing vials of holy water when they see her. She looks up at him and gives a friendly smile, though she's careful to keep the woman with the axe in her field of vision
"Yes, I got a letter to," Chara says, showing him the puppet. "And this weird puppet. It's nice to meet you. I'm Chara."

Unhappy that the market got rid of individual purchases for one-off subclasses, magic items, and monsters?
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Ah, I see," Chara says to Eithne, doing her best to relax a little bit, even though the elf certainly has a point that they could have all just walked into a trap. "You probably heard me say it already to Lucian, but I'm Chara."
I guess I'll go ahead and roll a Perception check as well.

...After a moment, he approaches Chara and says, "Hi... I haven't seen you around before. Did you get a letter from Blinsky too?"Though he is a little wary, he tries his best to be friendly as well, "My name's Lucian. What's yours?"
When Lucian finally enters and introduces himself to the demoness, Eithne takes a moment to peer into him too with her azure eyes.
'Male. And elf!' has just the time to think the savage stranger, before the voices in her head, reacting as usual to the proximity of a dusk elf, begin to compete for the thought-shouting champion title.
'One of ours! He will help us take revenge on the devil Stradh! ' 'No! He won't be able to do anything, as everyone else couldn't! ' 'Lucian! Son of mine! I didn't want to abandon you but...' 'We need to talk to him! He must know...' 'Eithne, tell him...' 'No, stay away from him! Why...'
It is evident from Eithne's suddenly aching expression that something is wrong, but the savage stranger, staggering back a few steps and appealing to the burning rage that has kept her alive until then, somehow manages to relegate the voices in an annoying (but bearable) background of her mind. She therefore seems to be able to return to normal (at least, as normal as a worried savage with a greataxe firmly clasped in her hands can be).
Lucian looks over at Eithne when she mentions the possibility of a trap, "I...considered that. Though I did circle the perimeter a bit... I didn't see anything suspicious, but I can't say there isn't a real possibility that I could have missed something."He looks down, as if thinking back on what he saw... After a moment he looks up again and says, "How many others do you think there are? Who got the message I mean."
"No... Idea..." Eithne continues to struggle to keep the voices in check, while she starts to reply to Lucian "My son..." (here the struggle must have been in vain).
She pauses for a moment, to hiss between her teeth, as if to herself: "Shut up, damn it!"
Then, with all the (little) naturalness that she manages to simulate, she resumes her answer to Lucian: "Sorry... I meant... 'Boy', of course... not 'son'... Anyway, I have no idea... I thought... I was the only one!"
"And yes, I'm alrgith, thank you" concludes the savage stranger, as the voices temporarily subside "It must just be the tension caused by this situation".
Lucian blinks. He's rather confused at her reaction...not to mention her response, but he tries to cover that up and be polite. "Um... Only one?" He squints at her, taking in her chiseled features...he can't see her ears though, and has never actually met another dusk elf before so he is utterly oblivious to the fact that he's talking to someone of his own race rather then a human. "You thought you were the only one of what?" He chuckles a little, "Oh, you thought you were the only one who got a letter? Honestly I didn't know what to think when I found mine. I definitely wasn't expecting very many others though."
Chara notices that the Eithne is acting erratically towards the males in the room... and that the woman is clearly distressed. So she decides that the best course of action is to try and divert the elf's attention from whatever is going on inside her head.
"Well, we're in this together," Chara says gently to Eithne. "I won't pretend to know what happened to you, but you aren't alone anymore. Come on, let's try and find our host... I'm curious what he has to say to us."

'Really a sweet-hearted she-devil...' thinks Eithne, feeling the empathy in Chara's words 'Given the feast that's there is sometimes inside my head, I pretty well know I'm not alone... I'm at the same time one, no one and a one hundred thousand! But still... what she said is maybe the kindest thing someone told me lately'
"Thank you" the savage stranger replies, forcing a weary smile to form on her face. "And yes, I'm quite curious as well".
You hear a loud crash from the back of the shop, then loud cursing. The monkey screeches, then runs into the shop’s backroom through a door behind the counter. You hear it chattering, as well as a voice saying, “Piccolo, what is it? Hyave our guests arrived?”
After a moment a large man in motley garb emerges from the door to the back. The monkey sits on his shoulder. Upon seeing you he smiles widely. “Hyello! I am Blinsky.
