So I thought I'd give a try at a PbP DM for a short (maybe longer if the players enjoy and I can think of stuff) campaign. I've written a quick blurb of the idea for the campaign (in the spoiler), looking for about 5-ish players. Updates don't need to be frequent, I'll try to update once or twice a day, with a couple of days off depending on how this goes. If you're interested, send me a quick message with a character concept and I'll check in a bit. It'll be start at level 1 and probably have a quick-ish levelling system. Hopefully happy gaming sometime soon!
Two hundred years ago, a huge shift in the planes occurred. Asmodeus crafted a devious ploy that allowed him to capture the divine essence of Lolth, Demon Queen of Spiders. The details are not well known, but what was known is that the drow became subservient to the king of devils. Within a year, due to the union of the drow under his order, their mastery over summoning and controlling demons allowed Asmodeus to take control of the underdark, and slowly the surface. Several of the major cities of the realm collapsed within weeks. The upper planes sent several powerful servants of the god; Planetars, Solars, and others, to help defend the mortals from Asmodeus' wrath. These areas are some of the few safe havens on the surface. They are few and far between, but those who do not wish to live under the might of Asmodeus' troops, now generally referred to as "The Army of the Lower." due to it having demons, devils, and underdark beings. Some places even had avatars from evil gods, not wishing to side with Asmodeus, in an attempt to gain from this power struggle.
Since then the gods' servants have effectively become rulers over their own domains, having mortals trained to keep the borders safe. Some others are tasked with journeying into the Lower-controlled lands to either recover artefacts to help expand the influence of their particular deities in that region or destory an oncoming troop unit.
The area you begin in is Allhaven, under the rule of the Solar Barrizhein, who works for Pelor. It has several small towns that are within its jurisdiction at the southern end of the main landmass. While worship of any of the gods (beyond Asmodeus and Lolth) is allowed, those who are favoured by Pelor usually rise through the ranks faster. The Solar is requiring new recruits to help with a dangerous new task; head to the ruins near The Dead Forest and investigate the rumours of a dark power residing within.
The city of Allhaven. It is something of a splendour in these times, which large marble pillared buildings and a fully functioning system that includes trade and education. Within the centre of town is Pelor's Palace, within the Solar Barrizhein seats himself to oversee this province and protect it from the powerful threats outside. However, not all threats are something "worthy" of the mighty winged one's attention. Occassionally smaller bands of creatures slip through the mountains to the north, or sneak through the Giant Steppe and are not caught in the eyes of the guards. However, they are usually spotted and vanquished before they can reach the great city within and its warded walls. Recently a ship arrived in the port of Risingdawn, the first in several months. It bore refugees from the distant land of Arcrene, a province protected by Ioun. They saught shelter, which Pelor's church gladly accomodated and they were now under the protection of Solar Barrizhein. On this particular day, several groups of people were summoned to Pelor's temple; mages, fighters, clerics, paladins, and more. Around fifty people answered the call, including yourselves. The temple itself is a large white stoned building just a stone's throw away from the palace, with a huge statue dedicated to the sun god, who appears as a human in a robe and with long hair and beard, standing tall. The statue holds a large sun disk made of enchanted glass that glimmers during the day to remind everyone that Pelor is watching over the town. Upon announcing yourself to the templars at the entrance to the church, you are lead through to a small antechamber one by one, where you are asked to wait until the High Priest is ready to speak to you. The antechamber is freshly cleaned, with its marble floor glistening. There is a pair of small tables flanking the main pathway between the corridor and the main room ahead. Beside each table are four sturdy chairs with padded cushions, two on either side facing inward, and upon each table is a small incense box, small whisps of aromatic smoke leaving a pleasant atmosphere in the room. Among your group is a male halfling geared up in a scout's uniform, with a shortbow and a shortsword beside his adventuring pack. He appears to have dozed off while waiting for the High Priest, though his boots show signs of travelling outside of the city walls recently; he may have travelled in for one of the neighbouring towns.
(If you would like to introduce your character by their physical appearance, then feel free to chat while you are waiting. Feel free to wake up the halfling should you wish to speak with him)
One figure breaks away from the crowd to approach the Sleeping halfling. The figure is a halfling himself, bald, with startling pink-blue eyes and his skin is practically porcelain white in tone, with bright yellow paint markings, that honestly just look like scribbles along his visible skin. He’s wearing odd clothing, bright yellow trousers with an odd coat that has yellow fabric jutting out all over, that you assume is supposed to mimic bird feathers. He carries a backpack, minerature bow, and funnily enough a human-sized katana longsword, that’s practically as big as he is.
He stares intently at the sleeping halfling with a disappointed frown, and the sleeping halfling starts fidgeting in his sleep, like he suddenly started having a troubling nightmare.
The halfling, looking a little disturbed in his snooze, sits bolt upright and grabs for his sword. He stops before drawing the blade from its scabbard as he looks around the room. The hood on his head falls to show a mop of scruffy chestnut-brown hair and two eyes of a similar hue glaring back. "Oh..." He says, putting the blade back down. "Well that was embarrassing." He looks to the other halfling in the room, inspecting him and his more exotic attire. His eyes seem less sharp than when he first awoke, as if he had turned off his instincts for the time being. "Well met, cousin." He says in a much brighter tone, offering his hand forward in a handshake. "The name's Pip... Pip Spriggens. I assume you're here for the same thing."
When Pip shakes the pale Halflings hand, no words were exchanged, but Pip somehow instinctively knew his fellow adventures name to be Canary.
Canary quickly let go of Pip’s hand, face mostly emotionless aside from a twinge of a frown, and when Pip blinked, Canary was already 10 feet away, people watching with his back turned to the other halfling.
Pip looks slightly perplexed at Canary's mannerisms. "Not really a talker, eh?" He says, retracting his hand to his side. "Well I guess not all of us can be, right?" Pip looks around to the other figures in the room. "Well don't tell me you're all mutes or something. It'd be a boring time together otherwise."
As more and more people make their way into the antechamber, a silhouette unlooses from the constant influx that is headed towards the collection of chairs and instead strays into a more calm and unoccupied corner of the room. The arms crossed and leaning back onto the white marble behind her, one foot slighty in front, the other one resting against the wall. Somber eyes slowly scanning every detail of the room, subtly wrinkling her nose as she inhales the not so subtle scent wafting through the chamber. She's wearing studded leather with fitting trousers, the dress kept in a light grey tone that extends even to the boots. Thin ribbons of the same color keep the fabric tightly attached to shins and thighs, as well as the fore and upper arms. Her traits soften a bit as her eyes continue to eye up the crowed. Black hair frames her face, interspersed with very few strands of single, white hair. The cut seems a bit weird at first, only ranging down to the shoulders, shortening up to the neck.
A few people in the room seem to recognize her as they glance at the women at the brim. Well, women would only hardly fit it, she looks so young she'd rather still be a girl. Stiffening up a bit, her dark eyes gaze at two halflings that are already shaking hands. A feint smile crosses her lips. Hesitantly at first, she wanders over to them with growing determination, while eyeing up the unfamiliar amount of yellow one of them is unveiling, just to see them part ways again, not a word being spoken. Immedeatly covering up the lost look on her face the moment it arises, she maintains her way straight to an unoccupied table a few feet behind the scene and seats herself on one of the chairs.
"Now that was cool.", she lets the yellowly clothed figure hear in his thoughts.
Listening to the words the other halfling now mutters, she turns around:
"You make it sound like you're quite sure we're gonna be doing this all together.", she responds in halfling. She lifts herself up again and strolls over to him, reaching out her hand. "Thea. Thea Qynn. How 'bout you?"
"Oh, err, Pip." Pip turns to Thea, offering his hand in friendship. "Pip Spriggens. And I'd assume we're being put together for a team if it's just us here." He looks around at the slowly populating room. "So, err..." He glances up and down, sizing up this lady in front of him. "What is it that you do then? I'm a scout from Sun's Last Light." He nods to his pack. "I'm just here for this then going back out again."
Thea, when you telephatically communicate with the albino Halfling, you get a sudden shock of surprise, even though you were the one who sent the message. Although you can’t see it, at least with your eyes, the halfling is staring intently at you now, and you see images of yourself introducing yourself to the Albino.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Well, nice to meet you Pip." , Thea responds, ignoring the halflings staring with a trained smirk. "If you are the scout from Sun's Last Light, just consider me the cavallery of Allhaven." She proceeds to take a seat on the opposite site of the table. "And for me this is a tad more than a part-time job. Tell me, I might be a little new to all of this, but i'd say that our numbers don't quite fit the regular scouting parties, do they? Any idea what all this fuzz is about?" , she asks with blatant curiosity.
Is Pip beeing honest honest with her? Insight: 17
A sensation as if being quenched in ice cold water suddenly dazzles her, forcing Thea to close her eyes for a moment. However, without any visible signs of wincing or something similar, she slightly turns to the spot where she believes the other halfling to be standing, twisting just barely enough to let him see the approach of a big grin. Again adressing Pip, she goes:
"Our yellow fellow over there is something of an oddball, huh?"
Pip glances over to Canary. "Yeah, well we can't all be charmers." He replies with a big smile. He seems eager to be here, though his cleaner armour betrays that he is probably a newer recruit than a seasoned veteran. Thea can tell he's trying to boost his own confidence, but also to help others feel at ease. "I kinda want to call him Canary, but not really sure why." Pip subconsciously scratches behind his left ear, looking up to Thea. "Anyway, I did some work time in the lawless lands recently, so perhaps that's why they need me."
The lawless lands is a local term known for lands beyond Sun's Last Light. It goes beyond the domain of Allhaven.
"Canary you say? I feel like that word's been tailored just to suit nothing but him...",she nods in agreement. "The lawless lands, eh. Thats both impressive and terrifying." , she tries to get back to their initial topic. "My father used to tell me stories about mad folk like you. People risking their lifes for the sake of others used to be a tremendous inspiration for me as a child.", Thea replies with just the slightest bit of bitterness in her voice. She is leaning back in her chair, giving her best to relax in a noticable fashion. "So, what's it like to be out there? Did you discover anything that might explain todays gathering?" An experienced listener might potentially see through the excited couriosity in her voice, masking a cold but just as calm determination.
A golden-skinned man walks into the antechamber, clad in armor with a morningstar hanging from his belt. He sits down at one of the tables.
"Greetings! I am Fjorgin Gautr, champion of Pelor."

Fjorgin, once you make your bold announcement, you feel a presence lingering in the edges of your subconscious, the feeling of someone watching you in a dark ally. When you look around for the source, you see a bald, albino halfling with eye-wateringly bright yellow clothes staring intently at you with unblinking blue-pink eyes.
Off to the side of the antechamber, walking out of the shadows against a wall, a figure of a young wood elf suddenly phases into plain sight. She is 5'6 and with a small frame, brown hair, green eyes, fair skin, and carrying a longbow with two shortswords on each side of her belt. She wears scale mail with freshly picked vines loosely incorporated into it. She darts her eyes back and forth, appearing to be slightly nervous, and cautiously approaches the gathering of people near the halfling.
She says in Elvish, "S Suilad."
"Greetings"
Then continues in common to no one in particular, "I hear the corruption of the northern forest has gained in strength. The corruption of a forest is something I cannot tolerate. If you don't mind, might I suggest that you get a red hat to compliment your outfit?" He bursts out laughing, at what is, apparently, a very funny joke. He whispers, or at least tries to whisper, to Ragmin. "Get it? Cause then he'd have yellow clothes, blue eyes and a red hat!" He nods towards the elf and tries, but fails, to pronounce the name she gave "Hello, Lievire Witretyne! You are a hunter of fiends? Haha, I feel we shall get along very well then!
