Welcome adventurers to the world of Otora. We will be using this thread for any and all discussion that is not in character for the story.
Rules
This game will be light on rules and focus more on the fun of the story telling. We will be using 5e rules as a standard for consistency but rule of cool is always the most important rule. We will also have rules that pertain specifically to the format in which this play-by-post game will follow.
Gameplay Rule
We will be using the rules set forth in the 5e DM guide and PHB for character building and format of playstyle (i.e. AC, skills, feats and traits, leveling).
Combat will be a bit different in that we are not going to do initiative rolls. Instead, if combat or other circumstances where turn order is important, we will start with the players always acting first. First to post will be first to act. You will be able to take one turn (move, action, bonus action). You must then wait until the enemy acts or you are prompted by the DM to take another turn.
When wanting to take an action that requires a roll, you are allowed to preemptively roll for the action you would like. I do hold the right to ask for a different roll if needed. If attacking, you may roll for dmg with the attack roll in case the hit lands.
In order to use a reaction, you will need to post before any other actions are taken that would contradict your choice.
It is up to the player to keep track of all items and gold. Honesty will be expected.
We will not be using any game maps. All locations will need to be narrated including movement and proximity to other things.
More gameplay rules to be added as they come up.
Please read this thread for tips on how to roll dice in this game.
Posting Rules
You will be expected to post at least 5-6 times a week. An absence of posting will result in removal of the game in order to allow other players continual play. If you plan on having a leave of absence, please notify the DM so you are not removed from the game.
You are not allowed to post anything that contradicts something something someone else has previously posted.
You are not allowed to control another player or dictate their actions/reactions.
Unless specifically stated, you are allowed to interpret a situation as you see it.
There is no limit to the amount of posting unless in "initiative".
Cursing is allowed but please be respectful.
Please post any dialogue in game with your characters chosen font color.
More posting rules to be added as they come up.
Please read over this thread for posting tips such as taking actions.
This is a private game. If you are interested in joining, please message the DM. The DM holds the right to remove any player from the game if they feel that the player is not being conducive to a fun and respectful game.
We will be creating characters using all 5e source material available; PHB, Xanathar's, Volo's. (Unearthed Arcana will be allowed at the DMs discretion.)
Please create your character using standard 5e character sheets. You can create them digitally or physical.
You will share your character sheet via a google drive folder. If you do not have a google account, please make one for ease of sharing any external documents.
We will use either a standard array for stats or you may roll 4d6 and remove the lowest roll. Honesty will be expected.
All new characters will be created at level 3. If joining after the campaign has begun, the DM will tell you what level to make your character.
Please chose a font color that will be specific to your character. This will be used to help differentiate dialogue in-game.
Backstory
It is encouraged that all players create a backstory for their character. This will help in building the world in which you will participate in.
You may add to the world as long as it does not contradict anything previously explained.
Characters may know each other from their backstories.
It is appreciated if players use the KnivesTheory to help create a fleshed-out back story.
Please message the DM with any backstory you do not want the other players knowing.
You may also post any other information about your character such as pictures in this thread or shared folder.
Please message the DM for any questions about your character's backstory you do not want other players knowing.
This is where you will find information on the world you will be playing in. Otora is a high fantasy setting. It will use all of the races from D&D 5e as well as the Faerun/Forgotten Realm pantheon. It is classic medieval era with limited technology.
World Map (Will upload the photo to this thread once I figure out how...?)
World History
Otora is in the year 3786. Civilization is comprised of long lineages of elves and dwarves as well as humans, halflings, gnomes and the many other subraces. Almost 200 years ago, there was a world war, the War of Abolition, that segregated the continents of Otora. The war began when a human by the name of Nodril Sirsk began a genocidal attack against any non-humans on the eastern continent of Voshath. Any person who was not a human was hunted down, captured, and usually killed. Many of the denizens of Voshath were killed and the lucky few who lived were forced to flee and move their lives to the western continent of Estren. The elves and other inhabitants of Estren welcomed them into their lands as well as helped fight off and force the Iron Gauntlet back to their base of Fort Braxion.
To this day, at Fort Braxion, the remnants of the decedents of this original non-human movement still live and uphold these ideals. However, in the rest of the world, life has moved on. With the war almost 200 years behind them, some people have even gone back to their old lands, trying to reestablish a life back where their ancestors came from.
The humans not associated with the genocide were given a home on the predominately elven continent Estren, along with the numerous other races who were forced to flee. They created a new kingdom, the Kingdom of Taliven. Here they grew and thrived as a new peaceful and accepting nation. To the south, the elves maintained their stronghold and way of life in Alune.
The dwarves, living mostly on the southern continent of Desmus, avoided most of this war. However, they are not without their own problems. Originally dwelling in the Helm of Gofrad, an ancient red dragon by the name of Aelreune came and with the help of some kobolds, attacked their keep 50 years ago. The dwarves were eventually forced to abandon their home and create a new one, Drudan's Keep. The Forgotten Helm now lies emptied of treasure but still home to many kobolds.
Locations
Estren
Estren is the continent that lies on the western side of Otora. Home to the elven sovereignty known as Alune as well as the new Kingdom of Taliven. Estren is an expansive continent full of diversity in both its biomes and inhabitants.
Alune
Alune is the ancient home of the elves on Otora. It is one of the oldest locations and has stood for millennia. The elven nation is ran by a monarchy with a council to help rule over Estren. Many of the high elves live within the city of Alune. Tall spiraling structures and magic are abound in this large city. You will find their wood elf brethren living in the Silver Branch Forest on the southern end of Alune. While they live separately, they work together in securing a safe place for all of them to live.
Kingdom of Taliven
Nestled between forest, mountain, and lake the newer Kingdom of Taliven was a result of the fleeing inhabitants of Voshoth. The elves gave this land to them in an effort to preserve the diversity of life. What began as a meager refugee camp, a dragonborn by the name of Shaxaris Taliven worked to turn it into the kingdom it is today. Rich in natural resources, the Kingdom flourished in just a few decades. The kingdom is now run as a democracy with each citizen getting a say in what happens. It is the most racially diverse area in all of Otora and they pride themselves on this fact.
Port Haven
Named after being the largest port in the aid of relocating people during the War of Abolition, it still remains the largest port when sailing across the Shattered Sea. It is run by a league of wealthy merchants, the who maintain its prosperity, albeit at the cost of others at times. Sailors find themselves at home here, at least for the brief moments they are not at sea. Laws here are a little more vague and self-justice is tolerated. Only crimes against the Golden Kraken are punished by the "government".
The Grand Citadel
Up on the northern border of Estran lies the Grand Citadel. This building was erected in both the names of the gods and of knowledge. Priests and monks often visit to become enlightened. Run by an elder sage who inherited his task from the previous sage, Tobur the half-orc spends his days preserving the history of the world as well as the knowledge to move it forward.
Warrenton
Warrenton is a large city built on the southern coast of Estren. The city is a trade city that thrives on moving commerce. Perhaps the largest collection of magical and non-magical items, Warrenton started off as a few smaller districts but expansion and growth continued until a large network pushed them together to form the city as it is today. Swords for hire comprise the security around here as there is no formal leader. There are heads of each smaller district that work and struggle for a constant balance for the city. Any religion is frowned upon in the city but that does not mean cults do not find their way in.
Kru' Avak
Kru' Avak is filled with orcs, goblins, and other like-minded creatures. It is ruled by a war lord, with power constantly shifting as challenges to lead must be accepted. They lack enough organization to form any sort of formidable army against the other inhabitants of Estren but from time to time, roving bands of creatures venture out to see the rest of the world and take what they can find.
Desmus
Desmus is the continent that lays on the southern end of Otora. A mostly barren land, only the harshest can call this place home. Those being the dwarves. There are a few other inhabitants such as lizardfolk and tabaxi who live here but none as fortified as the dwarves.
Drudan's Keep
The new home of the dwarves, Ragdir Druden lead the dwarves out of the Forgotten Helm and into the Sword's Edge Crest to start their new lives. Richer in minerals than originally thought, a new wealth is beginning to form. However, it is meager compared to the original wealth they once had. While they do not keep their borders closed, few choose to venture to this wasteland.
The Forgotten Helm
The original homes of the dwarves, it was taken from them 50 years ago by an ancient red dragon, Aelreune. With the assistance of kobolds, they attacked the keep and stole of the all the riches the dwarves had amassed. While the dragon left, the kobolds considered their new home spoils of the attack. It is unknown to this day where Aelreune took their treasure.
Raven Eye
Raven Eye is used to house the worst of the worst in the world of Otora. A fortified prison, it was originally constructed to house those who were found guilty after the Abolition ended. Now it is used to keep anyone who is deemed to big of a threat to stay near civilization.
Voshath
To the east of Otora lays the land of Voshath. Once a large and prosperous land, the devastation of the Abolition has left this continent in meager ruins. Over the last few decades, a few have tried to resettle this land but the history of war is hard to erase.
FortBraxion
The largest settlement that still remains from the war, Fort Braxion is home the human descendants of those who started the Abolition. While not to the extreme it once was, most of the population still hold on to the ideals that spurred on the massacre. Few go into the city but even fewer leave.
Idinguard
What was once used the the base of the elven attack on Voshath, the building remains mostly unused. Some who wish to rebuild on Voshath have used it to begin a new city. The physical town is much larger than its current population. Efforts are being made to refurbish this war camp into a prosperous city.
Wellshire
Calling this place a city is a stretch as it is run mostly by outlaws. Gladiatorial games, gambling, and other underbelly guilds run rampant in this lawless town. Anyone is welcomed but outsiders are easily noticed and preyed upon.
The Toad's Belly
Nestled in a swamp, the Toad's Belly is a large collection of humans who were originally trying to stay out of the war. With very few resources, life in the Toad's Belly is not easy nor glamorous. However, mystics and other seers claim this place to be special. While most of the population remains humans, other races live here but usually as slaves or live in even worse conditions than the rest.
Grace of Kaleen
On this isolated corner of Voshath, the Grace of Kaleen poses to be the mecca of all magical energy in Otora. It is unknown how or why but the area is comprised mostly of floating islands, some the size of cities. On the cliff's edge is a towering sanctum where many go to learn in the magical arts. Many make a pilgrimage to this area to gain this power. Many visitors are un-welcomed unless they have proven themselves worthy.
Hi all! I am very excited to start this adventure. I have been wanting to play more but, due to time restraints, getting to a live game, whether IRL or online, is difficult.
I love to make up characters and am really flexible about what role to play so I was wondering what others are creating. If no one plans on playing a cleric/healer, I will give it a shot or if we need some muscle, I will gladly build a Barbarian. Warlocks are one of my favorites, but I would love to play something else.
Hey everybody! can't wait to partake in this game. Never played a text based D&D game and it sounds exiting, also new to using D&D Beyond so I'm exited to explore the features. I've played 5e IRL quite a few times and 3.5e a little and i'm glad the main focus is the roleplay aspect, a lot of players focus on combat and stats that I've played with, and I've been the only one describing all my spell-casts and attacks. looking forward to playing with you guys, liking the 5-6 posts a week which allows for a more casual game that'll fit around everyone's time. I love playing spellcasters as I have played Sorcerer and Cleric several times in the past, I have a couple of Ideas for a Sorcerer, but Barbarian also peaks my interest. I'll pick a class that balances the party based on everybody elses choices.
If you havent guessed, Dibs on this colour for my text.
I've already posted in the Gdoc the full character sheet for Mordekai Da, Teifling Monk. Expect a large amount of aloofness, general humdrums, and a glint for the gold if it comes. Here's to a whole new world.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Hey guys, Julian here! Actually used to do a ton of text based rp a few years ago, so I'm very excited to give it a shot using DnD! Especially since I'm moving soon and my 2 irl games are coming to an end.
I was thinking of playing a celestial patron warlock, which could potentially work well with another lock since I'll be focusing on heals and support. Suddenly I'm also having an idea for a barbarian/bard though, which sounds like a ton of fun. So yeah, also pretty flexible haha.
I love how flexible everyone is. Since no one is going rogue, I would happy to take on that role. She will be a feral tiefling. I have been wanting to do an assimar celestial warlock, so let me know if you decide on raging, Julian. I will take pink, I think.
I think I am gonna go with the bardbarian. And either a half-elf or a triton. And he'll be very very oblivious lol. Think I'll go with this nice teal for my color.
Now I’m torn. Assimar celestial warlock (or cleric, or Paladin) or tiefling rogue that I may multiclass later. I think playing an assimar in this world would be really interesting. Anyone else really want to be the rogue or the healer? Happy to make my decision by default.
