"I have nothing big enough" he mutters to valrieth "and the balloon is moving too fast, all my illusions are party tricks"
Lacking that, he sends a small flame out among finley's, which blossoms into a roaring inferno for a moment,
(OOC: I think that this is the first time that the party has seen Ilifir use Fireball.)
Valrieth is startled by the burst of flames. She jumps and then ducks behind the rim of the basket for a moment. She glances at Ilifir for a moment, impressed at this power, before blinking her eyes to clear the afterimage and continuing her assault on the approaching flock.
The giant geese dodge and weave with many hit by the fire ball and magical rays. The flock of giant geese disperse with Giant Goose 2 falling to the ground dead.
End of Combat.
Clapperclaw soon after safely lands in a rather pungent area of Hither with stagnant swamp waters nearby. "Well will you look at that we made it to the ground in one piece. Now how long do you want to stay down here or should be lift off again?"
Valrieth looks sadly in the direction where the giant goose fell out of the sky. (Not sure whether his body is visible from where the landed.) She heaves a heavy sigh and says, "Good job, everyone! It's too bad that the lead goose was so stubborn, but at least we saved the balloon from damage."
Finley and Val had spent a few days last week hiking across the swampy mud in Hither. Can we see any landmarks that we recognize from where we landed?
(OOC: Note to @willow_ivyleaf and @valeskah: the map is to scale, but the locations are not. That is, the basic location and distances between Bavlorna's hut (in the west) and the Brigands' Tollway (the big tree stump) are accurate, but those locations are "zoomed in." For example, the Brigands' Tollway itself doesn't span 5 miles: it's just a few hundred feet across.)
If the party is already close to Downfall, we could just walk into the bullywug town. It would probably attract less attention from the bullywugs if they walked into town instead of flying the balloon into town.
Otherwise, if we've have landed way down by Telemy Hill (the hill with the keyhole-shaped cave) or anywhere east of the Brigands' Tollway (the big tree stump), then Val votes for lifting off right away and continuing the journey to Downfall by balloon. They need to make as much distance as quickly as possible to reach Downfall in time for Finley's bargain. She doesn't want to wait here for the geese to return or for some other swamp monster to find them while they're still on the ground.
"Whew, tha' were a close one." Finley wipes his brow with a hand, "ah hope we're close ta Downfall, if not ah'd like ta take off again soon afore th' geese come back in greater numbers!" He doesn't take his eyes from the sky, scanning for more threats.

Finley Stoneshaft, Dwarf Artificer - The Wild Beyond the Witchlight, Falkas, Half-Elf Drow Warlock - Keys of Empire
Aoife watches in amazement as the fireball goes off. She turns to Ilifir and makes an impressed grimace before turning back to the geese. As they fall or turn, she straightens and shakes her bow in their direction. "You should have stayed away! We didn't want to have to hurt you."
Looking around as they land, Aoife tries to see where the giant goose has fallen. "A feather from a giant goose would be useful in the future, I'm sure," she comments.
while getting your bearing you find you somewhere between the Telemy hill where Jingle Jangles lives and the crisscrossing walkways by the huge tree stump.
Clapperclaw lifts off once more and the party spends the remaining time in the air.
Then Clapperclaw gracefully lands the Balloon in Downfall with plenty of time for Finley's deadline. You have 1 day before the deadline.
There is a thick perpetual fog covering Downfall obscuring most of the town. With an odd silence permeating Downfall and a nervous energy in air. The proud bullywugs are nowhere to be seen.
(OOC: The fog may make it difficult to tell in Downfall, but did we have some sense of the time of day before we landed?)
Valrieth says, "The hag lives in a hut in the middle of the lake, perpetually surrounded by fog." She points east, away from the docks into the thick fog. She looks to Finley and asks, "Do you think that we should find Octavian firsts? Maybe it's best for him to be there so that we can make sure that the hag upholds her end of the bargain and gives him his heart back right away." She reminds the other two: "Octavian is an elf who foolishly bargained away his heart to the hag. He helped us survive the hut and the first time we were in Downfall, and we promised to help him get his heart back. If we deliver the portrait in time, the hag is supposed to restore his heart."
Val looks around the docks. Are there any boats tied to the docks here? Even if we go find Octavian first, we're going to need to find a boat to get out to the hag's hut.
(OOC: @Weathervision - if it's 7:30 a.m. now, were we able to get a Long Rest during the balloon ride after the attack of the giant geese? If so, Valrieth can finally change her prepared spells for what she expects they'll have to deal with here in Downfall.)
"Thank ye Clapperclaw, yer a godsend fer sure," Finley nods and looks over to Val. "Aye, we definitely should find Octavian afore we see th' 'ag."
Valrieth says, "Oh, yes! Thank you, Clapperclaw! Could you stay with the balloon? When we're done here, I hope you'll be able to give us a ride back to Thither again." More quietly, she says to the others, "And depending on how things go with Bavlrona Brightstraw, we may need to leave Downfall in a hurry. And I think that we'll need Elidon and his alicorn horn if we hope to free 'Z.' So that means we need to back to Thither and reunite with Elidon at the Wayward Pool."
Val looks at the obscuring fog and their empty surroundings with her ears erect and whiskers quivering. Her nose twitches nervously. You can hear anxiety in her voice as she says, "Something's wrong... I wonder what's going on here Where did all of the bullywug guards go?" She scans the area, listening carefully for signs of hidden creatures. Perception: 23
If Val doesn't see anyone around, she gestures to the boats and proposes, "Shall we take a boat and row across to the other side to look for Octavian?"
The idea was to row along the south side of the lake, staying near the shore and (later) cliffs near D18 and D13. We're trying to make it to the docks for the southeastern part of Downfall: the ones just north of D13 & D14. We're hoping that we'll find Octavian back among the giant mushrooms (D14) since that seemed to be a sort of "home" for him in Downfall.
Yes, to the long rest and yes Aoife was able to get a feather from the dead giant goose.
(OOC: No worries. I'll mark off a Long Rest.
Since she had plenty of spell slots, Valrieth would have made another 2 batches of goodberries before she slept.
I rolled a 3 (in game log) for her Cosmic Omen feature, so that's a Woe for the current day.
I probably won't have a chance to finish her spell selection for the day until this weekend.
Val assumes that when the party arrives in Downfall, we may need to deal with some bullywug drama, especially since we basically stole the balloon last time we were here. And after her "woe" cosmic omen, Val suspects that Bavlorna will try to trick them or attack them, and they'll end up fighting her too. She does not plan to prepare Pass Without Trace today since they should be entering Bavlorna's hut openly, returning with the portrait. She will prepare Dispel Magic, and other than that, she'll probably focus on combat and healing spells.
A bulbous, green-black cauldron with a thick lid sits above a bed of hot coals on six sturdy iron legs that protrude from its curved bottom like the extremities of a crab. A wooden ladle hangs from a lanyard looped around the lid’s knob.

Several holes dot the trunk of a gnarled old tree that grows on the shore of the lake. The tree has lost all its bark, and a few withered leaves cling to the ends of its twisted, knotted branches. One end of a clothesline is tied to a high branch on the northwest side of the tree. Several old garments hang from the clothesline, the other end of which disappears into the fog hovering over the lake.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Valrieth bends down to pick up the flute. "I don't think that Octavian would leave his flute behind," she says as she stands. She's instantly on the alert, her nose twitching and her ears swiveling in the direction of any nearby sound.
Does Val see or hear anything nearby? Perception: 21
If nothing attacks them right away, she says, "I think that someone must have taken Octavian away. I don't think that the hag ever leaves her hut, but maybe one of her servants? Or the bullywugs? Or something else in this horrible, horrible swamp!" Her voice is tinged with emotion: annoyance at the delay, fear for Octavian's safety, and anger at the hags and their corruption of Prismeer. Before they tramp around, perhaps Aoife would like to look for tracks to see whether there's any sign of what took Octavian away and which way they went. If not, they can search the giant toadstool patch for clues.
If they cannot figure out what happened here, then they'll just have to start going around Downfall until they finally find some bullywugs or someone else who may have seen Octavian and knows what happened to him.
(Ooc, sorry i've been busy irl and forgot to check dndbeyond)

This Mug immediately shared with me a transcendental tale of an Infinite Mug that anchors the Universe and keeps it from folding in on itself. I filed this report under "illogical nonsense" and asked why its sign is in Times New Roman font, when it is basic knowledge that Arial Black is a far superior font. I wondered: How did this mug even get past the assembly line with its theistic beliefs and poor font choices?

Yes, there are boats tied to the docks. It is 7:30 Am
(Weathervision: Did Aoife find the dead goose to take a feather, or did we not stop long enough?)
Aoife thanks Clapperclaw briefly but sincerely. "I would rather not be that high up without a skilful person like yourself at the helm!" she finishes.
She looks around them, trying to get the lay of the land, and nods in acknowledgement of Val's information.
