Zaxx steps out cautiously from the underbrush and towards the breathing man. He'll also search for any signs or evidence as to the cause of the acrid stench.
Kryinor calls his warning at almost the same moment Titus whistles for his companions to come.
Breccha begins a detailed search of the wagons looking for clues as to the raiders intent.
Zaxx emerges from the other side of the trail scanning the ground, vegetation, and wagon train for clues.
Kargan ever watchful keeps shield raised and remains ready to meet shaft or blade.
"Burns...darkness...death from the sky..." The man gasps between weak ragged coughing fits. He fades back into unconsciousness and his breathing slows and he emits on last rattling wheeze and his quaking body stills.
Titus fetches his medical supplies as Kryinor reaches them. The young Druid thinks over the signs of the malady on the bodies and the dying man. To his keen mind and great knowledge of the natural world this thing has attacked the wet membranes of the body and is some kind of poison judging by the reactions their bodies have displayed.
Breccha searches and can find nothing of great value among the wagons. It seems as though the looting was done in a great hurry and by few. They must have taken what they could carry and fled. This kind of pillaging smacks of opportunity, not planning.
Zaxx and Mr Skittles move through the scene of death to Titus and the dying man. His furry companion not daring to stick more than his twitching nose out from underneath the young wizards hat. The poor creature shivers uncontrollably as if a dangerous predator was around somewhere. Zaxx's racing mind tries to put the scene together. Whatever was responsible was sudden, could cover a large area, and was able to overcome or ambush such a large group.
The Ranger, The Druid, and the Mage all agreed that the most likely cause of all this death was some kind of airborne toxin that attacks all of the wet tissues of the body.
Gravelly Titus speaks while still looking at the unfortunate soul just perished.
"He said it came from the sky..................Burns.................... I have an ill feeling about this. You my educated gents are far more knowledgeable than me in this. Could it be acid?"
"regardless, we should take precautions against airborne attacks"
"Anyone who has worked a mine knows of the 'Silent Killer', a poison gas which kills suddenly leaving no sign, but I have never seen the likes of this. The only defense we had in the mine is to tie a damp cloth o'er your nose and mouth, but it only protects for a short time."
"In an enclosed space that makes sense, my stocky companion," says Zaxx as he kneels beside the recently deceased man.
"Here out in the open, though? I know of spells that could do something like this but ... ," Zaxx's gaze turns upward and worry creases his young brow.
"... 'death from the sky' ...?"
Very, very carefully and deliberately Zaxx strikes the ground with his staff as he stands up. Blue magic surrounds him, tracing a faint outline of a suit of armour over his body.
[OOC: Zaxx uses a charge from his new staff to cast Mage Armour (lasts 8 hours)]
Kryinor frowns as he surveys the area, looking to see if any of the ravens are being affected by the toxin . "I was not prepared for something like this, this is not the work of orcs.... the raiding maybe but this poison.... it seems there is more than one force at work here. In the great forest there were many fearsome beasts that could use poison such as this but certainly not to this magnitude, mostly it was a defense mechanism for plants and animals.... but this, this is horrible.
"My master taught me spells that can detect and neutralize most poisons, I will ask for Luna's guidance to remember how to cast them. Should we run into whatever caused this."
If Kryinor spots any ravens either falling out of the sky or starting to become ill affected by coming into contact with the corpses he will suggest moving away from the area.
Kryinor scans the ravens in the vicinity. None seem adversely affected by their interaction with the wagon train. The stench of whatever the compound was is faint and more than likely too dispersed to affect anyone now.
Dwarf, Druid, and Mage all exchange knowing glances, the most likely cause of this widespread death is some kind of poison gas. But its origin, was it spell born, natural, or from some creature...
As Breccha continues to inspect the wagon train he notes that although the beasts of burden are missing there are no signs of them being led away. It's as if they just vanished.
For now though the area seems quiet. The road to Connyberry runs ahead and the trail of the six or so Greenskin raiders leads to the south east.
"Not wanting to sound callous, my good dwarf," Zaxx says as he takes the torn piece of heavy cloth he's offered, "but the orcs already have a lead on us. I'm sure the dead won't mind if we leave them to the elements for a while longer. Let's bury them on our victorious return!"
Zaxx will put the piece of cloth under his wizard hat.
"I agree with our dirt delving friend. However we should not let their tracks cool too much. Never fear magus, I will scout their trail, they leave sign like a herd of bulls. Follow my directions gents I shall see you after"
Titus then readies his gear and sets off down the Orc trail .
tracking with advantage: 10 - don I forgot to add advantage on this roll
Titus moves off to the south east after the raiders. Judging by the tracks , now easier to read away from the confusion of the wagon train, he determines that there are six in total. By the way they are moving they know the area well and have skilled path finders with them. Titus thinks they have a two hour lead on him.
Kargan leads the rest of the company in making sure the bodies of the traders are respectfully laid to rest. The countryside is rough and stony but some willing earth is quickly found with dwarven eyes. With so many hands to share the burden the dead are laid to rest quickly and hopefully would not leave angry shades behind to trouble travelers on the Triboar Trail.
An hour later and the dead rest in the earth. The group move on to catch up with Titus.
OOC: If anyone wants to go off with Titus you can be there ofc :) Any other actions at the wagon train or near it you want to do just let me know and it happens :)
Titus will have marked his trail in his usual manner - a chalk mark here, a rock placed obviously upon another there and the occasional cut sapling. Moving stealthily after the orc raiders he follows keeping the 2 strikes distance. Only halting when he feels he started gaining upon them and that they have stopped.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Returning to the other Breccha speaks in steady but concerned tones "I am worried that something very large has taken the pack animals..."Letting his statement hang.
He begins to scan the horizon all around for signs.
"Aye lad I have been thinking the same as ye. At times, the elders in my hold would tell tales of long ago. There were many types of Dragons, not just yer fire breathin' types, some had a freezing breath, shot lightning bolts, spat acid, or created acrid smoke that burned." "If such a beast is here, it will turn this region into a wasteland, many more will meet their doom!"
Zaxx stretches his sore shoulder muscles and wipes his brow with the cloth hid under his hat, muttering all the while about the stubbornness of dwarves. Looking with disgust at his dirty nails he snaps his fingers and utters an arcane word, instantly cleaning his clothes and hands.
"Disgusting, really," he says to Mr Skittles, who is now perched precariously on the brim of Zaxx's hat, munching on a worm.
Kryinor looks to where the beasts should have been and then to where there tracks should have been. Your right Breccha, i dont see any trace of them..... It could be a dragon or dragonlike creature, it could also be some sort of demon dragged up from the depths of the abyss. Either way, this day is getting better and better."
Kryinor helps to dig the graves before heading after titus with the rest of the group.
Scanning the sky the main group moves off south east following a well blazed trail from their guide Titus. The ranger had an hour head start on them, the next decision it seemed was to follow in stealth or press forward at speed to catch him up.
The skies for the present seemed empty of large hungry creatures.
One strike further along the raiders trail Titus moves with practiced stealth in well know terrain. His mind and eyes to turn to the skies and surrounding scrub looking for his quarry and the source of all the death at the wagon train all those miles behind on the Triboar Trail.
While pausing for a moment to check the spore of the Orc raiders and get a feel for the immediate patch he was in Titus hears some hushed voices speaking in Orc coming up behind him.
"He's a crafty one, I'll give 'im dat Gorbag. Doh I don't fink we are too far behind 'im."
Another deeper voice replies, "Good. All dis runnin' around as got me firsty and in a mood. Be good to have a nice red drop of Humy or elf blood if what you says iz roight. Might 'ave some real fun before dis day is out. Za good fing da boss put is thinkin' cap on and wanted us to check da trail for curious gubbins an that."
"Ezz a cleva one iz da boss. Now shut up and get ya war face on. We aint too far behind now...", the first one spoke again.
Seconds later the brush back along the blazed trail began to rustle and crack as a few creatures began to approach nearer.
