“Righto, let’s be on our way. Teeth.. mmm. I wonder if there is any application for a dental collection….” Virro hops in and starts looking at the harpoon launcher, testing it with his finger, pointing and moving it all around.
Reed completely is one within the redcaps. No one notices a breath of his as he slides his hand into the pocket of the one that has the bloodied pouch. As during this time, the tall gangly one that is apparently named Wilfred starts chatting with them. He growls and retorts, "You don't need to know my name and me and mine will eat you for dinner!"
Reed slips away back to the Tormentor and then calls over to Wilfred.
"Come on Wilf, we're good." Reed calls as he checks inside the pouch and wrinkles his nose a little.
Wilfred chuckles, then hears Reed. He says "Well, Mr no-name, I guess there will be no chat then. Have a good day."
Wilfred will keep his guard up as he goes back to the group. He smiles a genuine warm smile at Reed. "I never even saw you over there! You did a fantastic job! Shall we go return this to Barnabus?"
As the boys hand the tooth over to the flaming skull, Barnabus's grin impossibly gets wider and his flames grow around his head. The redcaps do take notice of this and the one that had the tooth, checks his pocket. Seeing he has been robbed, he lifts his scimitar high above his head and cries, "Thieves!! Those bastards stole from us, took our lucky tooth! They must not be allowed to leave!!"
The flesh golum cries out as the obstuction is removed from his foot and the redcaps around him glare at Corlith now that the fun of mocking Mickey has been extinguished. They too start picking up the cry to attack the group.
As the redcaps start to swarm, Mad Maggie shrugs and continues to walk towards the shack, pulling on Mickey to get him to follow and he does, but without moaning and groaning, just a shuffle as he moves. Barnabus stands there, looking from the redcaps to the group, some in the machines, some not, waiting to see what is going to happen.
As the redcaps begin raising weapons and becoming irate their noise is drowned out by the roar of an engine as the Tormentor class infernal vehicle comes to life, its crushing wheels spinning around to face its raking scythes toward the small creatures as if daring them to continue. The Ironmaiden gives them a wave from the cockpit.
Corlith sighs as the nasty creatures start to congregate and suggest violence. He backs away towards the Devil's Ride, glancing quickly towards the gate to see if their escape is clear, but otherwise keeping his eyes fixed on the redcaps.
As they are distracted by the sound of the Tormentor's engine, he will get back into the passenger seat of the Devil's Ride.
If the redcaps start to move towards them, he will act. And he hopes Roo is ready to take control of this thing.
If he sees a good opportunity, Virro stands and pulls his shield around to face the redcaps. When they should that they must not be allowed to leave, after Maggie and Barnabus have cleared the area, Virro encourages a great ball of flame from his shield to engulf the redcaps, aiming for the largest majority of them. “Vile little creatures, not going to tell us when we can leave or not…”. Once they are clear of the blast radius, Virro lets the fireball go, aimed at the largest concentration of redcaps.
Virro sends a fireball at them : Causing 28 points of fire damage in a 20 foot radius sphere, DC 21 Dex save to cut that damage in half.
Seeing the tides turn with the unpredictable redcaps, the party jumps into the infernal machines, Roo at the helm with Corlith joining him in the Devil's Ride and IronMaiden taking control of the Tormentor as Wilfred and Reed jump in to join them and Virro. The sounds of the machines starting up and revving fill the air as well as the dirt and dust they stir up.
Barnebus jumps out of the way and scurries his flaming head off into the shadows of the fort, with barely a thanks in his wake. Lulu starts spinning in circles, partly due to excitement on the fact they were finally heading out and partly due to the impending fight that seemed to be about to start. She finally chooses to hover over Roo and Corlith, figuring they would lead the way, knowing Roo's way of things and that Corlith has the map.
Suddenly the infernal machines start barreling through Fort Knucklebone, the mad redcaps come swarming in like a tide of fury. They shriek in manic glee, their jagged iron shoes slamming against the ground as they charge, eyes wide with murderous delight. Their tattered cloaks whip in the wind, and they cackle as they hurl themselves at the machines with reckless abandon.
Luckily, the gates have been left open since the group's arrival and as the machines rumble forward, one of the redcaps, a particularly large one that Wilfred knew was named George, takes his rusted scythe and swings the wicked blade at the side of the Tormentor. It sparks against the armor plating, but the machine rumbles forward, running the redcap over with a sickening crunch. The mad creature tumbles beneath the wheels, only to scramble up again, relentless.
The redcap that Reed stole the tooth from leaps from the shadows and latches onto the Devil's Ride like a feral beast. It pulls itself up using the iron railings, gnashing its teeth and trying to claw through the metal. With a frenzied yell, it pulls out a handful of poisoned daggers, aiming them at Roo. The glint of steel flashes dangerously, but before the redcap can throw them, the Devil's Ride runs over another redcap and the one latched on loses their grip and falls from the vehicle, hurling curses and insults as they fall.
And then, a redcap stands tall, watching as you all start breaking through the gated area, away from all the fallen redcaps that have been trampled and you see that they are holding a small, infernal grenade. It's eyes flicker with crazed delight as it pulls the pin and tosses the weapon toward the open hatch of the Tormentor. The grenade spins through the air with a trail of hellish flame behind it; Virro somehow stands tall as the vehicle hurtles through the gate and speaking to the demon within the shield, sends out a fireball that disintegrates the grenade in it's wake and as it explodes, leaves redcap carnage in a perfect 40' diameter circle.
You're clear of Fort Knucklebone and it's inhabitants.
Virro smiles at the circle of redcap death, as they drive out of Fort Knucklebone, saying under his breath, “The challenge now is to raise an army of red capped nincompoops. Heh.” He turns his attention to the harpoon, moving it around at imaginary targets.
Corlith helps Roo out with whatever he needs with regards getting the Devil's Ride moving and out of Fort knucklebone, whether that is just calling out when Redcaps are on the vehicle, or manning the pedals. All the while holding tight to make sure he isn't flung about during the wild and bumpy ride.
"Well, that situation deteriorated very quickly. I think we will have to do some fast talking if we ever want to go back there", he says to the Gallus as he checks the map.
Looking up to make sure Lulu is keeping up with them, he points in the direction they needed to go.
Every so often as they travel, he will reach across to Roo and make sure he is fully focussed.
Without having to focus on driving, or the harpoon, Reed does his best to keep a watch for any sign of danger in their surroundings as they race towards their destination.
(Perception: 3+9= 12; guess he's more relying on his Passive Perception to catch any movement: 19)
"I'm unsure what unit of distance over time you'd prefer, but there is no instrument for speed quantification here, it is faster than a horse at gallop and seems to not tire" the IronMaiden states to reed before inquiring, "did the tooth get returned to its owner or was all that for nothing?"
Corlith checks the map and then looks upon the vast horizon of Avernus that surrounds them. After a few moments barreling away from the Fort, he spies the rise that juts out over the River Styx, with the symbols on the map matching the landscape at the location.
Pointing towards it, Roo turns their two-seater in that direction, with the larger vehicle following in it's wake. It doesn't take long before they are noticed by someone else.
A plume of red dust billows in the distance, created by a large infernal war machine barreling in your direction. Its crew consists of boar-headed and rat-headed humanoids, all wearing goggles. The incoming infernal war machine is gore-spattered with gnashing metal teeth at the front and a wrecking ball swinging behind it.
Reed watches the oncoming war machine with a mix of dread and pleased curiosity.
"They're never going to believe this back in Thornvalley, are they mum?" Reed says.
He then holds himself as still as he possibly can, draws an arrow, nocks it quickly, lines up the driver of the war machine and lets the arrow fly.
Bonus Action - Steady Aim
Action - (17, 9 + 9) = 26 to hit for (11 + 12 sneak attack) = 23 magical piercing damage (believe his standard 80' range just includes everyone on the approaching vehicle)
After he lets the arrow go, for a brief moment Reed wonders if they might be friendly. "Oh well, too late now."
Virro turns the harpoon toward the approaching vehicle, launching the harpoon at it with curiosity and zeal. He’s still getting the hang of how it moves and the shot isn’t as good as he would like, he turns and starts to reload another with a curse under his breath. “Dammit, foul creatures, just let me get this sighted in…”
Harpoon : 11 to hit, for 10 points of piercing damage to the enemy vehicle.
Roo looks like the baddest chicken to ever exist as they roll out upon the road. Quietly he gibbers to himself as they go. If Corlith listen's closely, he can hear the little Gallus...
"The road...buck....I'll....I'll call it the Fury Road yeah...."
"Ride eternal....shiny...and chrome....buck..."
He gibbers and drives, taking the path as Corlith guides, and is content to do so until the other riders begin to approach from the west. He clucks excitedly when he sees it.
"Corlith! BEHOLD! Buck! That thing is cool as hell!"
Roo turns the Devil's Ride toward his new foes and races toward them, ready to juke to either side if they should attempt to ram them.
"What a day, buck! What a LOVELY day!"
And then....then....he tries to fire off to Eldritch Blasts....and misses absolutely miserably...
"Hell is generally not considered cool, but I get the sentiment", Corlith replies whilst not being as enamoured with the idea of hostiles trying to intercept them. Especially as their vehicle dwarfs his own. "I know size does not necessarily worry you, Roo. But their vehicle is going to flatten us if you aren't careful", he adds.
Feeling the need to intervene, he shouts at the one driving, "Reverse".
