Well as the wagon bounces along, those who are walking beside will see this. Would be really unnerving having a conversation with him while it's happening
So... you know how there's a rule that a character must drink 1 gallon of water a day? I kinda forgot about it while running the game yesterday. What are your thoughts on that rule and do you guys want me to enforce it starting today?
It really depends on how much you want to micromanage. Most DMs don’t pay much attention to rations and water except when the party is in extreme circumstances.
To be perfectly honest with you, I had a different system for food and water planned:
You need to eat at least 1 meal a day (no need to worry about water) or suffer exhaustion. However, in hot days (or when you're in a desert) you have to drink an additional 4 pints* of water (empty your waterskin). If you don't have water in store, you will need to make a DC12 CON save at the end of the day or suffer exhaustion (does not stack with lack of food). Each consecutive day you go without water will result in a harder and harder CON save.
However this was before I thought about the existing rules. What are your opinions? If the majority of you agree on using the PHB rules or the above mentioned homebrew rule or not worrying about water at all then I will gladly go with the majority decision.
I’m up for whatever, as long as it’s clearly defined by you, the DM. Nothing worse than fighting about the rules.
It’s also true that a lot of things are taken for granted, for instance, I assume most people traveled in their armor, doffed it before sleeping and donned it when they woke. It’s not in the posts, but it’s kind of assumed. Most games take food and water for granted in the same way (like I said, unless in extreme circumstances, like in a multi-day dungeon a DM may ask what you’re doing about food and water.)
In particular, the way you rule this may end up affecting spell selection for a cleric/druid. A utility spell like Create or Destroy Water is seldom used in a combat-oriented campaign, but becomes very useful if the DM would otherwise cause the whole party to suffer exhaustion.
I like your homebrew rule, especially if travelling is a big part then it means we can do small logistic stuff before the trip (e.g. put a couple of barrels of water in the cart if we know that we're crossing a barren area, for areas like we're in now presuming that there are small stream as we travel would be easier).
Also if we're going to be travelling a lot I think it would make more sense to state things at the beginning of the trip (e.g. Folki will fly off for two hours everyday to hunt, so and so will take night shifts, when we set up camp everyday, etc.) rather than having to do a week or mores worth of separate days, and then doing the appropriate rolls at the beginning and only stopping if something happens. Or else it will take us literal OOG days to get between places.
(Extra: Though for the beginning of this trip I quite like doing i slowly so we can all RP how our guys travel and interact with each other, and then for the rest of the trips we then know the baseline and people can just say if they do anything out of the ordinary)
I kind of like your idea of stating things like hunting and night shifts. Still going to wait for everyone's opinion before enforcing anything like that though. And I don't think it will take OOG days because I tend to skip over RP/pause moments (like the one we're having now) when 4/7 players have posted or when I feel like the others would say the same thing.
EDIT: Though I'm not quite sure how it will work in practice due to weather effects.
That's what I mean by stopping when things happen. For slight weather changes you can probably assume that we travel a little slower and stop a little earlier but nothing that needs our in put, and then for larger things like large storms or coming a cross something on the road you can pause and 'zoom in'. You could give a quick summary of the rip after we head of like:
Day 1: After leaving -------- at around noon, you head south on the road. You manage to travel 7 leagues [OOG: 1 league is roughly 3 miles, the distance you can normally travel in an hour. I tend to find it simplyfies the maths] before the light fades, setting up camp near a small grove of trees.
Day 2: Carrying on along the road, the day goes by without incident. You travel 12 leagues in total. You do not find anywhere sheltered to set up camp and so have to sleep in the open [OOG: if there are too many nights like this you could cause random members to get exhausted].
..........
Day 5: A couple of hours after midday, Gymgier spots a plume of smoke to the east. It is too large and dark to be from a campfire. Skriiod recognises it as a familiar sight, the plume is likely from a burning house. You reckon that is around 4 miles off the road.......
JUst give the weather in the summary (I just skipped to save time), I like the way you're describing it now. It helps to set the scene. Also you could say 'After travelling for a few hours you can see the sky to the west start to darken as clouds threaten the skyline.......' and then we can choose to either boost towards a village we know is ahead to try and get theere before a storm hits, or spend the time fstening down everyting and creating a tent out of the cart and several cloaks, or call your bluff and keep going.
(edit: there could be small hints in the way you describe the weather on the days prior or something we heard in the previous village or one of us knows the weather of a local area (eg Vals homeland might be prone to sudden and violent thunder storms but only near the edge of the desert and so we are far enough away that it won't reach us)
I'm afraid not even I know when what weather will hit. I usually roll for a weather effect. The wind that spooked the horses wasn't fully planned. I rolled on a off-screen table I made up and I got a weather encounter.
For the CON saves, are you wanting a single con save now to know if it will cause disadvantage until we doff the armor or roll a con save every time we try to attack?
Thinking about trying to sketch the party. The above image is just placeholder drawings to get the right rough size, demeanor and shape for everyone. If any of them should be different in any way let me know
Wow! That’s great! I pictured Val with more... savage kind of unatended hair, keep in place by his antler diadem but that’s really cool! Wow man... that’s truly impressive!!

A single CON save that will cause disadvantage while in armor.
Just to say, drawings a re not mine. I'm not claiming them, like i said they're placeholders i got off pinterest to get a rough idea. Mine will most definitely not be anything like those

I would also say that it could really slow down PbP if each player has to commit a post to providing sustenance once per day.

what do you do?
I like this idea. Weather effects may be simplified this way starting from after this quest is completed.

Just looked at the picture and that is a pretty cool picture.

Hence the differnce in art styles for each one
Ah sorry. Misread that. It's still pretty cool that you're planning to do something like that. Sketches and drawings take a lot of time.
Hope everyone enjoyed their weekends.
