While waiting for The Black Rose to respond to Arti's first question to him (and giving The Black Rose time to answer Arti's other questions if he chooses to), Tarton looks at the pattern the droplets form as pointed out by The Black Rose and the matted branches they seem to come out of and return to. He is also watching The Black Rose for any affects the droplets might have on him as he has already touched and smelled them.
Tarton holds up one hand to the other group signaling them to stop approaching.
Tarton now thinks this looks like it could be a trap but has not yet done a full investigation to determine if it is truly a trap. He is waiting for The Black Rose's findings about the droplets and the results of Arti's detect magic before deciding if he needs to do anything at all. 'Maybe it's a bug's trap to catch other bugs?' He thinks to himself.
Zladark smiled warmly at Arti, clearly pleased to be asked about his past. "For now, let me tell you that my monk order is led by my father. It’s one of the great four monk sanctuaries in this area, this one located further south if you follow the river through Llandovion. You’ll find it on a hill covered in flowers, close to the river." His eyes seemed to drift, as if envisioning that distant place. "It lies along one of the local rock gnomes' travel routes… my other home."
He continued, leaning on his quarterstaff as he spoke, his voice initially soft and reverent. "You see, I only spent half of my childhood in that monastery. The rest of my time was spent traveling with the rock gnomes, learning the crafts of tinkering and alchemy. When my father learned of my whereabouts, he was quick to pull me back onto the path of a 'true monk,' but…" Zladark's expression softened, nostalgia creeping into his tone, "I never forgot my gnomish teachers. In truth, they were my foster family."
As he spoke, he became gradually louder, his enthusiasm overcoming his initial intent to remain quiet. Realizing his error, Zladark cleared his throat and lowered his voice back to a whisper. "If you want to know more, I’ll gladly share it with you another time," he added with a gentle smile. "But yes, for now… we should probably focus on the task at hand."
Zladark had returned his attention to the droplet on his fingers, furrowing his brow as he searched his mind for anything the peculiar substance might remind him of. He was so engrossed in his thoughts that he almost missed Arti's question.
When he finally realized she had spoken, he blinked, refocusing on her. In a soft whisper, he said, "Apologies… my mind was drifting a bit. I didn’t notice your earlier question." He offered a small, appreciative smile. "Personally, I don’t need healing at the moment, but that’s very kind of you to ask." He dipped his head in gratitude, still whispering.
------------------------------------------
Sorry if it was me you were all waiting for. I thought I had already answered everything that was asked of me. I hope I've answered everything now; if not, let me know.
The smell of the slime carries a distinctly amphibious tinge about it to Zladark's nose; though he isn't quite sure if it reminds him more of frogs, salamanders or axolotls. Tarton 's examination of the slime trail leaves him confused until he notices that the matted branches conceal a dip in the ground. When he parts them, he sees that there is a hollow space under the trunk with clearly scuffed earth, as if something crawled through and then crawled back. And while Arti does not detect any magic from the slime, she does notice on her second examination of the tree that the bark has been disturbed just past the point the slime trail ends. It looks as if several pieces have been pulled up and then pressed down again ... but not quite level with the rest of the bark. The distinction is subtle, but now that she has seen it she is almost sure something has been tucked under those pieces and then the bark used to conceal it again.
Meanwhile, Gwrgi has shepherded the rest of the scouting group to the point where the tree is just visible, and then stopped at Tarton's signal. You're close enough that you can hear each other speaking; and of course it's up to Artifex and Zenzor whether or not they heed the halfling's warning to halt.

After a few more moments spent analyzing the scent and texture of the sticky substance, Zladark turned to the others. In a hushed whisper, he shared his findings, "This has the smell of an amphibian. Can’t say exactly what kind, but if I had to wager… I'd put my money on one of those frog-like creatures."
Zladark paused thoughtfully, tilting his head as he examined the sticky trail. "It could maybe just be something they naturally produces when traveling over an obstacle like this. Just like a snail leaving a trail." His grip on his quarterstaff tightened, though, a clear indication that he was ready for anything lurking ahead.
Tarton picks up a small branch and turns around after examining the branches and the dip they hide and walks halfway back to Arti and The Black Rose, and stops. He then answers Arti's questions, "I wouldn't say that this is my team. A more accurate description would be that I am a fully invested member of this team. Our party hasn't yet declared a leader, though for now I would say it is Gwrgi as she has the most experience in this region from what I have seen so far. We would probably be lost like you were if not for her. But I got the feeling she has only been sent to help us get up this river. If she does leave, I would vote for The Black Rose to be our leader and if he didn't want that role then my next vote would be Artifex. I don't know the rest of the team that well yet so those are my three votes so far. We have been traveling up the river for a few days and though I don't think anyone needs healing at the moment, that will certainly change soon.
"Now how exactly... No, I need to shut up now. I'll have more questions for you after we deal with these frog people. For now both of you stand back. If this trail of slime is hiding a triggering mechanism or connected to something like that, this should either set it off or disarm it. Watch those branches for anything coming out of there. There is a way under the log hidden there I think."
Once both of them have backed away from the tree Tarton tosses the branch he is holding towards The Black Rose, landing a foot or two away from him. He then pulls out his short sword and after holding it up high, swings it down hard as if trying to cut a thick rope running between the drops of slime.
------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the description I didn't get a sense of how big the dip was under the log that the branches were hiding. Is it a small dip that cats, and other small animals would use to go under the log, or was it big enough for a human or something bigger to slide under?
If you need an attack roll: 10 in the campaign log, 8 damage.
"...her psyche was more than fractured, but a little insanity can be the perfect fuel for invention. Jinx..." Artifex pauses, frowning. "Or was her Name Powder? I'm unsure. Nevertheless, she made these remarkable little toys that went boom in the most spectacular of fashions. Something I'd quite like to replicate, but for now I'm working on some designs of my own. Simpler things of course, dice that'll win me any game, a jug that can produce a multitude of liquids, that sort of thing." They seem to have been talking for a while, and don't seem particularly interested in whether or not anyone is listening, happy to ramble to itself. Instead, their focus is on a few pieces of scrap, fashioned into a box. The device lets out a small click, then begins emitting a sound similar to the wind rustling the surrounding brush, mixed with a slight croaking noise. "Finally!" They say, holding their creation up proudly. "Not exactly camouflage, but it can't hurt."

Btw dm, in our chat you mentioned an ooc gc, but I don't seem to be a part of one. Could you have forgotten to add me or have you not made one yet?
Sorry but my character sheet was acting funny so I had to delete it. I’m afraid I will have to reroll Arti and everything should be fine but I’m not sure if that is okay with you…
Zladark nodded silently, understanding the caution needed as he backed away from the fallen tree, keeping a careful distance of about ten feet. His senses were on high alert, every muscle tensed as he remained close enough to detect any unusual movements. His grip on his quarterstaff tightened instinctively, fingers wrapping around the worn wood with a firmness that betrayed his readiness.
As he pulls back to swing his sword, Tarton gets a better vantage point on the gap under the log. He estimates that it is at least large enough for himself to pass through with his head bowed; and he thinks a human could get through too if they bent over at the waist. Before he can think much further about the matter, though, his attention is arrested by something much more pressing. The reaction to his sword blow on the tree is immediate and dramatic. As soon as the weight of the blow falls on the tree, before Tarton's sword can even cut through the loose bark, there is a sharp sound of whistling and chittering. At the same time, a thick curtain of sticky weblike strands erupts from beneath the bark (DEX save to pull the sword back in time to avoid its being caught). Had the halfling been stepping on the trunk he would have been totally ensnared in them,
The fountaining strands pushed the concealing bark aside; and anyone within five feet can see what caused them. A chain of strange-looking grubs have been placed in a shallow channel dug into the tree. They have black spidery legs, reminding Tarton unpleasantly of the cetterspap he fought in the dream realm some time back; but their bodies are cylindrical rather than round, and covered with greyish-brown chitinous plates. All the inch-long grubs were covered by a translucent, communal cocoon when their web shot up; they are now beginning to chew through it with their mandibles. The hissing and chittering noises they are making aren't particularly loud, but they are sharp enough to carry to the spot where the scouts heard faint croaking. Sure enough, the reeds rustle and four human-sized, biped froglike creatures emerge onto the path. Three are mounted on giant frogs and carry two crude but vicious-looking spears each; the fourth is on foot and armed with a short bow. When they see their trap has failed to ensnare anyone they croak out loudly and leap towards you at the top of their speed!
