"Gundren's the guy who hired us, and holds our pay for arrival. did he not leave by horse just before with another human just before us?"
do we recognise the horse as the same pair? roll?
"anyone else got a mind that we don't get paid for this wagon unless we follow on this trail?"
OOC: In the module, it says that you recognize the horses as belonging to Gundren. In my narrration at the beginning, Gundren left you with the wagon and wasn't on a horse. So I added the little scrap of ledger to make the connection. So yes, all evidence suggests this is Gundren's horse, along with his companion.
"Once I get this arrow out of me and patched up a bit, I say we follow the trail. If our employer has been taken, we'll have to at least make an attempt to rescue him. If we kill a nest of Goblins, all the better."
Eren will then attempt whatever first aid he can after removing the arrow in a way that causes the least damage.
OOC: I said above that you can take a short rest. A short rest will replenish some abilities (check your character sheet), and you can roll up to your level in hit dice to replenish hitpoints. Since you're level 1, you only have 1 hit die. So as a ranger you can roll 1d10 and add +1 for your CON modifier to regain HP during a short rest. Then, when you take a long rest, you regain half your level of hit dice back (minimum 1).
Leek will pass along any gooseberries to any who need it - replenish 1 hit point - (after he is done bleeding the goblins, that is. He will not do anything else no matter what others say or do. Bleeding the goblins is top priority). He seems in a much happier mood (almost seems like he's a regular gnome). He will even poke fun at Eren for the arrow in his belly, saying that the best way to not get shot by an arrow is to avoid the aim!
After bleeding out the Goblins, Leek sees the need and casts Goodberry to hand out as needed.
OOC: Goodberry uses up 1 of two level 1 spell slots and produces 10 berries. Eating 1 berry takes one action (trivial when out of combat), and eating just one berry satiates your hunger for an entire day. It is up to Leek to decide who gets berries, and how many.
OOC: No, we can do that. But lets say you cast your spell at night before resting, if you have a spell slot available. That way if you have a challenging day, you will have your spell slots available.
It is not uncommon to have an encounter with a goblin during travels. This many goblins however leads me to believe there is something more serious at play. We should determine Gundren's fate.
Leek votes to follow the goblin trail. "They have the mark" he says, to justify the course. Although, if we do follow we should try and hide the wagon in the forest somewhere. Otherwise these supplies will be gone before we get back. Not sure how we would "hide" the oxen though. Bring them with us or just tie them to a tree and hope they don't get killed by some animal...?
Let's be off then, on the trail as soon as possible.
Eren will replenish his arrows from the goblins' stock if he can.
Tracking the goblins: Survival 15
OOC: The goblin arrows are too short for the draw of your longbow, not to mention they are shoddily made. You shot 4 arrows, and recovered 2. You have 18 arrows (I updated your character sheet). Did you roll your HP for the short rest?
I changed Roll20 to a blank map and scribbled a "trail". I need a marching order and your role. Erenaeth is tracking, so I placed him on the trail already.
OOC: I placed you 10 feet behind Erenaeth. Tomorrow morning I'll assume Katerielle and Leek are behind Rindelk unless they say otherwise. Also, you should be able to move your tokens on Roll20. If you can't, let me know.
The part leaves the road, following the goblin trail. The tracks are very easy to follow, yet Erenaeth continues to be diligent in his tracking just in case some other detail could be discovered. Kitryn walks slightly behind and to the left of Erenaeth. Ten feet behind Erenaeth, Rindelk, Leek and Katerielle follow single file.
The trail leads the party northwest. The oxen and the cart are left behind pulled into the foliage and camouflaged to the best of the party's ability. The oxen are contentedly eating in the cool shade.
OOC: What are each party member actively doing as you follow the trail? Erenaeth is already tracking.
I will be communicating with any animal I can find to get intel (how many goblins, where they went, what they brought with them, etc.) Any info I can get.
Erenaeth is intent on watching the tracks, searching for something less obvious that could be significant, as well as glancing about ready to retaliate if ambushed. Leek chatters to the wildlife around, but appears frustrated by the responses, as simple animals have no concept of numbers, creature names or time. All they reply is, "Your pack" when Leek asks about Goblins and "moving" when asking about direction.
After 10 minutes of travel down this trail, Erenaeth is suddenly yanked off his feet, left dangling 10 feet in the air by his ankle as a snare trap is set off. The party is alarmed at first, but several minutes pass without any hint of attack.
Sigh. I would assume that, after hundreds of years of solitude with only animals to converse with, Leek would have known these limitations and found strategies to circumvent them. Like instead of asking for numbers, he might have worked on general size. (I don't know, like packs if he's talking to animals that work in packs. He might ask if it's a large pack or small family unit, using whatever rudimentary words specific animals have for these concepts.) As for Goblins, I'm sure the animals would have words for predators like these. I'm assuming Goblins are common enough for the animals to have a word for them, and if they aren't common, then they must be strange enough for the animals to have noticed and been able to communicate that these awful creatures passed by.
REGARDLESS, I will send my mouse up to gnaw the rope and chew Erenaeth down. Who wants to catch?
OOC: It would trivialize many portions of the game if all you had to do was ask local critters where to go, where to find what you're looking for, etc... The animals (Carrion birds) did alert you to the ambush on the road earlier, so it's not a useless skill, but there's limit or else it just breaks the game.
Dangling upside down 10 feet off the ground, Erenaeth appears distraught when Leek throws his mouse up, who then climbs and begins to chew on the rope.
i'll catch Eren, i'm guessing you need str or dex check?
i guess if Eren is focused to tracking that would make me need to deliberately state i'm checking for further traps rather then just the passive perception was going with?

Also, Leek will have the ability to heal too if he's willing to use up one of his spell slots, or give you some berries.

FYI, I will daily have at least 10 Gooseberries, as they last 24hrs. I hope I don't have to role play casting the spell each time?

I want to cast my mage armor. I scan the surroundings for signs of an ambush.
OOC: not sure what to roll for these actions
OOC: Mage Armor lasts 8 hours. It is still up from your last casting.
