I'd be really interested in joining, I've not done a Play-by--Post just yet but it seems like a lot of fun, and I like the premise of this a lot (gotta love the Underdark, right?).
Here is my character submission, for your consideration.
Character Name: Velphrin Cobiirn
Class: Warlock (The Great Old One, Pact of the Blade)
Alignment: NE
Bio:
While the majority of Drow in Menzoberranzan are devout servants of Lolth's will, there are many still who have been spurned one too many times by the fickle and cruel Spider Queen, and they seek the favor of other dark gods, even at the cost of their own sanity.
Velphrin was born into a House that worshipped one of these dark entities, a cult of The One That Lurks that merely used the facade of a Drow House to hide the furtive rituals performed in its manor's cellars night after night. Velphrin was a young boy when he was first indoctrinated into the cult, forced to watch the bizarre and discomforting ritualistic sacrifice of hapless slaves and creatures, and bearing witness to the depraved madness that would slowly overwhelm the minds of the members of his clan as they reveled in The One That Lurks' power.
It was every so often, when a cultist's mind was truly overtaken by madness, that they would perform a final ritual, often alone, where they would speak The One That Lurk's name aloud by candlelight, drawing his attention. In the morning, the rest of the cult would find the remains of the fool, either a shaking mass of gibbering madness, or a crumpled husk, devoid of life. In either case, the poor soul became yet another sacrifice The One That Lurks in the hopes that one day, the cult would receive a boon of his favor.
Unfortunately for them, when Velphrin turned 15, their prayers were answered. It was a ritual ceremony like any other, but Velphrin's parents - two lowly, ambitious members of the cult - had plotted against the others. In their growing madness, they believed that by calling upon The One That Lurk's true name while the cult was present, they could make a deal with the Dark God to spare their lives and grant them power in exchange for the lives of their fellow clan members. In the throws of the ritual sacrifice, they uttered His name - Ghaunadaur - and the horror began.
When it was over, every cultist from the House lay dead and mangled, their minds and bodies broken by the ire of Ghaunadaur - all except for one. For reasons that Velphrin will never understand, he stood unharmed among the bodies of his clan mates - the lone survivor. As he stared numbly at the twisted grins stretched across the faces of his dead mother and father, he felt something reach inside of him, and an immesne presence touched his mind with a voice like a bottomless well. Velphrin could not understand the words, but he knew their origin - Ghaunadaur - and he understood the message. It was an offer of a pact - a lifetime of servitude in exchange for a meager bit of the Mad God's power. Velphrin, with no possessions, no prestige, and no clan, agreed, and left his home, never to return.
Velphin spent a few years after this moment as a vagabond, a lowly and pathetic Drow who was viewed as subhuman by the proper Drow of Menzoberranzan, and he lived on the streets this way, half starved and weak, until one fateful day, when he was drawn to service in Bregan D'aerthe. He spent the next several years as a Bregan D'aerthe mercenary, pleased to have found a powerful and prestigious group of Drow to claim allegiance with, and over time grew to harness and control the power that The One That Lurks bestowed upon him. To this day, he continues to loyally serve the Bregan D'aerthe, taking on any mission that they assign to him with a dark glee.
I would love to play. I am looking for something consistent. I would fill any role but have not played a fighter . . ever . . so I would like to try that. I will edit with a character in a minute.
I am aware of the rules / actions etc. but do not have any clue what a "good" character would be. I won't be min/maxed (wouldn't even if I could) so if that is something that might be needed let me know and I can research some things. I have been playing DMing for about 25 years. I like to write etc.
I assumed that the classes would be limited to maybe fighter, mage, rogue?
Nadal Naerth is. . . was a front line fighter. He believes that the best fighter will win. His longsword is heavier than the usual weapons of his kin but he wears and wields it well. Bull headed, he often refuses to admit that he is wrong - but will follow orders. Wrapped around his wrist and tucked into his armour is a scap of a banner. He will never forget those who wronged him that night.
Fighter if you want but I would rather you play something you really like. It's supposed to be a long campaign so.
We have a wizard and a rogue already though.
Thanks. I am really not picky. I thought I fighter might be decent since I have not experienced that. Are bards a possibility? I would love to go ranger and not like our special elf. I am familiar with the setting but I am not sure how the classes would work out exactly. . specifically with Bregan D'Aerthe. If ranger or bard works I will make one of those and get back today.
Ranger would be fine. No worries about looking to much like the "other" dark elf. You are going to be on the wrong side of good.
This is a quick idea for this character. I have created him on the sight and will have to explore equipment, feats etc. a little more. Happy to take suggestions.
Jhaldrym Abbylan Ranger LE
Jhaldrym enjoyed the company of his brothers growing up - until they started having accidents. The first was during a patrol, the second was poisoned. When the third son was killed by a slave that gained access to a weapon, Jhaldrym decided that it was time for him to create his own accident. He managed to steal a valuable item from his family and give it in payment to a dwarf slave, promising the dwarf his freedom in exchange for helping him stage his own death. Of course, both would betray one another. The slaves place was to obey however, and Jhaldrym has held a long grudge toward dwarves since, seeing the face of that sniveling coward in any humanoid shorter than an elf. Having been betrayed he was forced to flee.
After months of surviving the underdark along, barely, he realized that - although he enjoyed solitude - he would need to be around others to survive.
He cares little about wealth, only somewhat for glory and lives for revenge. Although he is not positive which family member was responsible for the deaths of his brothers. . maybe it was even one of them, he struggles with the constant desire to find out and seek vengeance. Not quick to trust he has found a small sense of belonging now with his new brothers and would never betray them.
With his dreams wracked with visions of death and doom, he lives each day as his last, enjoying small moments when he can (he has a small flute tucked away that he will never be caught playing).
