The cook takes the gold coin and offers the fish stew with a much better ale. "Well since you have paid my name is Gristle Pete. Ass for gossip I don’t get no sleep from all the critters in the floors banging and knocking and hissing and whispering at all hours."
Ixsas is about to complain about this useless information until Gristle Pete gets to "hissing and whispering." That doesn't sound like critters to him. He decides not to draw attention to the fact and simply says, "Yes, I imagine that it's difficult to keep the vermin under control with caravans from all over arriving every day." He sees Serge enter the room and waves him over to join him.
Grisle Pete perks up after hearing Serge. "I have dwarven whiskey with your name on it. Bring that payday to me. 20gp"
Ixsas is a little surprised that Faelsin paid Serge already, but when he hears the price Pete names for the whisky, he looks to Serge and frowns. Ixsas adjusts his tunic and then ensures that his holy symbol is exposed and displayed over his sternum. As he touches the holy symbol, he whispers words to Kossuth quietly, casting Thaumaturgy. When he turns back to Gristle Pete, his eyes glow like the heart of a fire. Ixsas drops his headscarf in preparation for dinner, but that reveals a face that is a scaly and dusky black, much darker than his copper-colored hands. He fixes the Gristle Pete with his glowing eyes that stare out of his dark face and says, "Now, Gristle Pete, I let it pass before, but you're about to make me angry. I'm a cleric of Kossuth, the Fire Lord, and he grants me the power to punish the wicked with fire and death. Serge is my friend, and I trust that you will not overcharge him. Sell him the whiskey at its real price, and we'll tell you the story of how we defeated 4 trolls at once, burning down half of a deserted village in the process."
Zeds considers pushing his luck with the caravan leader but decides he shouldn't appear too rebellious or pushy. "As you command," he says with a bit of a bow of his head. "Just... Is this our post for good now or should we catch up with you later...?" Whatever the answer he accepts and departs...
Back with Krackle inside and all Zeds nods. "For now we do as Bog Luck says and play guard to the door... Later, as things quiet a bit, then yeah we'll try to slip inside and get a looksee..."
(Figure would want to be sure Bog Luck or nobody was watching us before we try anything, also want to wait til the foot traffic started to let up a bit as well?)
Gristle Pete grumbles but gives in after superstitiously warding himself against evil and tossing a pinch of salt behind him. "Fine its 3 sp for a glass and 11 gp for the bottle"
With that direction Zeds indeed heads back and follows Bog's directions, for now. As said before, he will wait until things quiet a bit and night begins to settle in before he considers trying anything unless other situations come up that dictate elsewise.
((I'll assume that Serge bought the whiskey and sat down to eat with Ixsas near the cook.))
As promised, while Ixsas eats, he tells the cook about the party's fight against the trolls. Ixsas isn't a great storyteller, and his stories tend to be randomly punctuated with religious interjections. A bard would be sorely disappointed that he didn't spin a better tale, but the story of a fight against the four trolls while the caravan and refugees tried to ford the river is exciting no matter how poorly told. Perhaps Gristle Pete doesn't believe that a small group held off and defeated four trolls at once, or maybe the cook is just glad that Ixsas and Serge seem to be in good humor once they've started drinking the dwarven whiskey.
In any case, once they've told the story of the trolls, Ixsas explains a bit about the people who were in the village that was attacked: "The villagers were refugees from Willowford. Their town had been attacked by a strange band of bandits who came with drakes and dragons, if you believe it! The bandits attacked and looted the town, and the villagers fled. But maybe those poor people from Willowford have angered the gods because -- where did they decide to settle down and make their living? An abandoned village at the foot of the Trollclaws! Thank the Light we arrived when we did. Praise Kossuth! If the Fire Lord had not guided our way to that village two days ago, the refugees from Willowford would have met their end at the hands of the trolls. Can you imagine? Escaping from dragons only to be killed by trolls!"
"I thank Kossuth that not a one of the villagers died in the troll attack," Ixsas finishes. "But can you imagine! Bandits who are in league with dragons and attacking random towns! Have you ever heard of such a thing?!"
As Ixsas talks, he watches Gristle Pete carefully for any sign of recognition when Ixsas mentions the bandits and their dragons. He cannot imagine that the cook has heard no one else telling such stories at this popular waypoint for merchants and travelers. Ixsas compares Gristle Pete's response and his demeanor to determine whether Gristle Pete knows more than he admits and whether Pete seems sympathetic to or afraid of the Dragon Cult.
Krackle would simply nod and lean against the wall as he kept an eye on the door or anyone that walked past. Occasionally he would peak inside the pack around his chest to verify that the egg was still looking OK.
Serge looks back and forth between Ixsas and Gristle Pete. Then he pulls out 15gp. "For the bottle. A steal at twice the price." He pulls the cork out with his teeth and pours himself a few fingers in a mug. Taking half of it down in one gulp, he grimaces as if stabbed and starts coughing.
"Oof..." he mutters once he can speak again. "I can never tell if dwarven whiskey is a quality bottle or not... but good or bad it never fails to punish the thirsty." He offers to pour one for the priest. "Its fire-water, right? I'm sure Kossuth approves, yes?"
Then he listens as Ixsas tells his story to the cook. He's uncertain just how unfriendly their current company will be, but perhaps Ixsas' words will make one of the blackguards reveal themselves. He sips on his drink while dark designs on revenge play through his head.

He offers to pour one for the priest. "Its fire-water, right? I'm sure Kossuth approves, yes?"
Ixsas accepts. "Kossuth demands that we recognize his power and revere him. But we are not ascetics." He raises his glass to Serge and says, "May Kossuth's Light ever shine on your path!"
Ixsas insight reveals that Gristle Pete has had heard such tales before, but he is a man more concerned about himself. He is a selfish man who believes his plight trumps anyone else. "Aye, you are not the first I heard such tales but then again I hear a lot of tall tales. These raiders seem to be an unruly bunch who no thought between their ears. If the attacks were so close, then why have they not tried their luck here at Carnath Roadhouse? Alas I am just a poor old man trying to make a living. I have been working on very little sleep because of those blasted critters making all that racket at night. Oh, let me tell you about my aching back...." this goes on for quite some time.
Through his ramblings Ixsas does pick up other small towns and villages being sacked but again for some reason Carnath House full of coin and valuable cargo is never targeted.
Alas I am just a poor old man trying to make a living. I have been working on very little sleep because of those blasted critters making all that racket at night. Oh, let me tell you about my aching back...." this goes on for quite some time.
Ixsas says, "Yes, you mentioned the vermin in the floors before. Maybe we can rid you of that problem if the Superintendent permits us. Where is it you sleep, if you don't mind my asking?" Since Gristle Pete mentioned "hissing," Ixsas doesn't believe that the cook is just hearing rats or other creatures, but if the sound is coming from "the floor," they'll need to know where in Carnath House Gristle Pete sleeps.
After he finishes his dinner and whiskey -- "Thank you, Serge!" -- and a long, tedious conversation with Gristle Pete, Ixsas gets up to leave the common room (room 8). He tells Gristle Pete that he and Serge must find their friends and their rooms. "Our boss will probably have us awake early to pack up and get ready for the next stage of the road," he says. Then he heads down the stairs back to the open area (area 1) below.
Ixsas would like to buy more supplies if the "store" still open at this hour and Faelsin is still around to pay him.
Next, Ixsas would go find Krackle and Zeds to see how they fared and share what he learned.
Finally, if anyone knows, he wants to find out which room Toren is sleeping in tonight.
The Store is still open. You can find Faelsin in his room which is on the second floor.
Gristle Pete says "I sleep here. This is not always a dining room. I stack up the chairs and lay out my bedroll. Now the racket made by these critters don't happen every night though often enough to keep me up"
Area 8 is right above the merchant store Carnath Suppliers.
After asking around you find Toren and Bay are sharing the room directly above your room on the second floor.
The Store is still open. You can find Faelsin in his room which is on the second floor.
Ixsas goes first to ask Faelsin for whatever wages he has earned guarding the caravan since he joined on the day they found the giant's footprint in the road. He has depleted his meager funds, and he needs at least enough to pay for food and supplies here. Ixsas does not know whether he can commit to continuing guard duties yet, and he tells Faelsin that he'll need to wait until he can talk to Zeds and Krackle. He fears that his group's path may diverge with Faelsin's caravan here, but he prays, "May Kossuth light your path until the end of your journey."
Then Ixsas hurries down to Carnath Suppliers with his gold to see whether he can purchase what he needs.
After asking around you find Toren and Bay are sharing the room directly above your room on the second floor.
Ixsas plans to visit Toren and Bay but not until after he finishes shopping and then reunites with Zeds and Krackle.
Assuming Zeds hears that Faelsin is dishing out payments he suggests he and Krackle each go in turn. Taking breaks from watching the room would be useful anyway in getting any watcher used to them not always being there together...
After that is done (?) Zeds would suggest that perhaps Ixsas can be a bit of a needed distraction. "I'm hoping to slip into this room we were told to watch. The sooner the better but for now it seems a bit too many eyes are around. But if, on a signal, you and perhaps Serge were to have a little bit of a loud argument and cause a distraction... Perhaps I could slip inside sooner rather than waiting til the wee hours of the night?"
Let us know if you need us to slow down or rewind. Otherwise, I'll assume that things like purchases go smoothly, and we can try to nudge the main "plot" forward.
According to post #2559, Carnath Suppliers are in area 3 (according to post #2559), and Zeds and Krackle are guarding the metal door to area 4. Does that mean that Krackle and Zeds are standing guard inside area 3, just outside the door to area 4? Or are they standing guard in area 1?
))
Money and Supplies
Assuming that Faelsin pays Ixsas a similar amount to Serge, he'll try to buy both of the material components for Clairvoyance. He'll also get some additional days of rations and some mundane items. If Carnath Suppliers also carries common healing potions, Ixsas will get one and recommend that everyone buy at least one for emergencies. That may put less pressure on Krackle and Ixsas to reserve spell slots for healing vs. dropping a fireball on their opponents in the future.
Regarding the Dragon Cult
Ixsas was proud of what he learned from Gristle Pete. The fact that the Dragon Cult has not attacked or tried to rob Carnath House implies that they're allied with Carnath House in some way. Of course, Zeds and Krackle already have much better information about all of that than Ixsas does. He listens with interest to what they tell him about Bog Luck and the caravan leader.
Ixsas does mention that the cook sleeps in the kitchen (directly upstairs from both areas 3 and 4). The cook seems to think that there's vermin making noise, "not every night, but some nights," in the floors. But the cook mentioned "banging, knocking, and hissing." Ixsas thinks that the cook is hearing Dragon Cult members whispering and doing something secretly in the store rooms in the middle of the night. (Ixsas thinks -- but does not say -- that the "hissing" reminds him of unkind things he used to hear when he was a child. Some of the priests of Kossuth thought that Ixsas was "naturally evil" because he had a Yuan-Ti parent, and even the ones nicest priest used stories about the Yuan-Ti to scare Ixsas into obedience. He often laid awake at night, listening in the darkness for the sounds of hissing and slithering, fearing that his Yuan-Ti father would come to take him away from Kossuth's temple.)
In any case, Ixsas says, "The cook's thoughts end as his own inconvenience, but it sounds like the Dragon Cult has help moving supplies through Carnath House. But why the secrecy once they arrive here? We were able to follow their caravan openly all the way up the Trade Way. Why would they move supplies out of Carnath House quietly in the middle of the night?"
Zeds's Plan
Ixsas agrees with Zeds's plan to sneak into the secure room (area 4). He can certainly help enhance Zeds's chance of success at getting into the room unnoticed. He's not sure about his ability to credibly stage a pretend fight with Serge, but he has another idea for a distraction that would probably serve the purpose.
Night Hag
Ixsas also reminds everyone that he would still like to try a couple of spells tonight to see whether he can help Toren with his "sleeping problem." He hopes that they have time to do both! "It would be a shame to abandon Toren to his fate. If the Mire brothers continue north with Faelsin, I don't know whether Toren will even make it as far as Waterdeep."
Ixsas starting to worry that he won't get any sleep tonight, and he hopes that they don't have to leave Carnath House first thing in the morning.
"The carriers may not know what they are carrying," Zeds points out to Ixsas. "Looted gold could be hidden in the bottom of a dozen crates, for example, and unknown to the shippers. Then when stopped here it could be removed and put on a different caravan..."
"Fight, argument, any kind of scene that grabs people's attention away from the room for a couple of minutes..."

"Hm...", Ixsas considers this point. "But then, if the Dragon Cult is unloading the looted treasure here, perhaps they have a base or temple nearby where they're taking it. If they won't let you be part of the final escort, maybe we can at least track them once they've unload their stolen goods."
