Looking to start up a simple PbP. You will be adventuring in a developing region that sprung up with the discovery of gold in the hills. Formal law is hard to come by, and the local goblinoids are looking to take their share of the gold as well. As you can imagine the local miners need all the help they can get to help keep the peace.
This PbP will last anywhere from a few weeks to several months and beyond depending on how long my creativity can sustain it.
Just simply drop a post below with the character you intend to play and a bit of background as to why they caught a boat to Houndstooth.

DMing: Adventures in (and around) Houndstooth | Sellswords on the Endless Plains
Hey! I'd love to play in this campaign. Would a tiefling sorcerer be okay? If so, here's Sarlypsis backstory plus her reason to why she came to Houndstooth:
Raised in an orphanage managed by a church of Tyr, Sarlypsis was named after her deceased mother, who left her orphan at an early age. She discovered her magic blood in her late teens, after several incidents involving her roommates floating like balloons or the curtains catching fire. She inherited her magic blood from her grandmother, yet this is still unbeknownst to her. After leaving the orphanage, she decided to make some use of her abilities and to find out about her family's origins. She decided to travel as an adventurer to gather information and control her abilities.
After some traveling and studying magic in various places, she decided that knowledge wasn't the only thing she'd need. She would also need a good amount of gold if she wanted to research her powers more, and Houndstooth, which had recently entered a gold fever state due to the discovery of some pretty big gold seam - or so she had heard -, seemed like the best place to start.
I could send you her stats through DMs if you'd like.

PbP Characters Valrish (Dragonborn // Barbarian 6) - Out of the Abyss - play by post
Sounds like a bit of fun. Had a couple of PbPs end recently so have spare timing on my hands in their stead. Count me interested.
If we're going about perhaps protecting a local town and its gold mine, I've got a couple of ideas to run past. Perhaps a paladin who works for the crown who is dispatched to the region as part of the land's method of helping bring law to the area. If not, I've got other character concepts in mind. Might update this with more info when I get home, as I'm about to head out for a bit.
Edit: Here's the base idea
Name: Gideon Alnoran
Race: Human (variant)
Class: Paladin 1 (aspirant Oath of the Crown)
Alignment: Lawful Good (not Lawful Stupid)
Background: Acolyte
Backstory: Gideon is one of those who was brought up in a monastery in the capital. All his life has been built up to certain tenants; serve, protect, and aid the king, the land, and the people. With this he was indoctrinated into an order of paladins who eventually work as a policing unit for the kingdom, dispatched to the far reaches in order to maintain peace and defend the name of the king. Since the discovery of the gold mines at Houndstooth, Gideon has become a young paladin of good standing, and is ready to go on his first real mission beyond the city walls, and assist in Houndstooth where he can. He is to meet the mayor/leader/whomever is in charge and offer his services as a loyal retainer to the land until it is stable again, and the rumoured goblin forces are repelled or routed.
Play Style: He'll be a young and slightly brash and active member of the community. He uses his trusty halberd as his main focus of weaponry to fight in combat, as he was trained to work in tangent with a shield wall. Now he is on his own, he will have to find people he can trust to work with and have linked goals so they can help defend Houndstooth, though he cares little for any reward beyond doing his duty for king and country.
A surly gnome Ranger with a grudge against goblins, and a desire to put them down wherever they amass.
A cheery (eladrin, perhaps?) Bard whose life goal is to integrate goblin tribes into civilized society
The reason for coming to Houndstooth would be to fulfill their chosen purpose as it relates to goblins. They both view gold as an end to a mean, and would only want enough to continue their mission. Either one of them would gladly throw in with a group of peacekeeping adventurers; one would join specifically to slaughter goblins, while the other would try and take the opportunity to better know goblins and try to make deals with their leaders.
EDIT: Here's a sample of the gnome character I had an idea for:
Gnome Ranger (Bounty Hunter Background)
Backstory: I roam the hills and countryside. The distant beyond is my backyard. I live on nothing but what I receive from the Lords, and their bounty is indeed plentiful. The laws of man have no hold on me, but those who break them learn how skilled I am at retrieving bounties. To fugitives, I am a nightmare. To goblins, I am death incarnate. The world will long remember...and wrongdoers will shudder at the name...Ipfizz Flabblestabble.
PERSONALITY TRAITS I always have a plan for what to do when things go wrong. I am always calm, no matter what the situation. I never raise my voice or let my emotions control me.
IDEALS: People. I’m loyal to my friends, not to any ideals, and everyone else can take a trip down the Styx for all I care. (Neutral)
BONDS: I will become the greatest goblin hunter that ever lived.
FLAWS: I have an irrational fear of puppies. If I had to choose between cuddling a puppy or a goblin, I'll choose the goblin.
Any limits on classes/races/books/public homebrews? What's the starting level?
Class Barbarian .... Race Tortle ... Background Gladiator
Soon after the parents death at 1year he started to adventure out into the world, not far past the 4 years he was captured and thrown into a gladiator's circus, there he won batles, almost lost his life in some as well, but as his wins grew, so did his popularity, but he was usually bested by his golden armored rival, Michael, a Human Fighter, and a free man from the moment when he arrived into the arena. This rivaliry grew and sometimes arenas would be sold out to see those 2 going at it.
After 9 Years in the arena he became a free turtle, for another year he stood fighting in the arena to try and beat his rival, he has then decided to become an adventurer and that the wilds would become his teacher again. He's now comming into this island both as a train and as a way to get some high amounts of gold to craft a new (golden) armor to show off against his rival once he gets back.
PS.: Armor value from race instead of class, and Legendary bundle+DM license (acess for the campaign to all if needed)
Theodora Cadash- Mountain Dwarf- Barbarian- Path of the Storm- Soldier Background
Theodora grew up in the mountains with her clan of barbarians that scorned all paths of magic. They found it as a sissy and cowardly form of fighting. They reveled in battle and bloodshed and trained all of their warriors in the Path of the Berserker. On the eve on their birthday, before becoming an adult, each man or woman that wanted to enter the warrior ranks takes a vigil. It’s there where they find their inner most peace and then decide if they want to replace it with the rage needed to become a Berserker that their ancestors would be proud of. Theodora grew up training daily and her dream was to enter the ranks of the elite. On the night of her vigil, Theodora found her peace, replaced it with her rage and then something went horribly wrong. Rather than being lost in blood lust frenzy, Theodora rage manifested itself in the elements around her in what she saw as pure and awful cowardly magic. Horrified and ashamed, Theodora fled her clan and her home. Lost, alone, and confused she wanders from town to town, looking for mercenary work and odd jobs to earn a bit of coin and survive. Hearing of the job opportunities in Houndstooth, she scraped her meager bits of gold together and purchased a boat ticket to her next temporary home.

Love to join you.... see if this works for your adventure.
Aust Nottinghill is a Firbolg cleric. His clan was slain by a Goblin Horde when he was a baby. The Goblins invaded the forest of his people and destroyed most of the land in a vain search for a relic to the Goblin god Maglubiyet. A priest from a temple in a nearby forest rescued Aust. The temple was dedicated to Mielikki, the goddess of the forest, a nature deity. Now an adult of the age of 45, Aust heard of the trials of Houndstooth and sees this as a calling to defeat the goblin influence, protect nature, as well as prove his worth to Mielikki. Not terribly interested in riches but sure of his usefulness to protect the innocent from Goblins, Aust wants to overcome his natural disdain for society and protect the forest near Houndstooth.

If you have any questions feel free to ask them in this thread. I figured the initial RP won't require much beyond a character background, personality, and perhaps the most basic of stats, so I might as well get the ball rolling and we will straighten things out as we go along.
Here goes nothing...
The Beginning
You have hitched a ride with a small cargo vessel due to collect a shipment of gold from the mines near Houndstooth. After a brief voyage you receive word that you should arrive within the next few minutes. As the ship parts the fog the town slowly seeps into view. It's not the most impressive place around. You can tell even from a distance the buildings are constructed rather questionably and presumably hastily. As the boat lazily slides into port you can hear a creak for every step taken on the dock. A band of men await nearby with several carriages full of gold ore, ready to begin loading the cargo onto the ship. A half-orc supervisor barks at his employees and they begin hastily hauling the gold below deck, seeming to pay no mind to any of you wherever you may be on this ship. (Speaking of which, it is up to you to decide exactly where you are on the ship when this all goes down). From a nearby warehouse a group of men look on as they each take a few puffs from a pipe.
You can see the docks and a warehouse as mentioned above, and what appears to be a rather wide road lined with buildings just off the docks. A thick blanket of fog prevents you from seeing much else.
After pacing the deck for what seems like an eternity Flynn waits for an opportunity to get to the dock, once there he decides that the workers need a tune and starts playing some sea shanties on his bagpipes to pass the time
Theodora groaned as the all clear rang throughout the ship. It was about time. All Theodora wanted to do was get off this blasted ship. "Dwarves" She thought, "Are not made for sailing." Her stomach rolled with the tide. Gathering her stuff together, she grabbed what she was pretty sure was her undershirt and stuffed it into her bag. Communal guest quarters were not uncommon to small cargo ships and Theodora. In her training, she stayed within the recruit barracks with both men and women where privacy was a impossible. Getting up, Theodora swayed like a drunkard at closing time. She righted herself and stumbled outside. The chill of wind nipped at her sun kissed face and the dew from the fog mixed with her already clammy skin.
She peered about focusing on the Half-Orc yelling orders to the rest the crew. He didn't seem to give a rat's ass at what she was doing so she made her way to the gangplank, hoping to get off this gods forsaken vessel. She pushed her way past the men loading the ship and finally stepped onto sweet, solid earth.

Vincentius de Camillas, Human Rogue (3) in Sildegard
Shirrah Stormseer, Air Genasi Cleric (3) in The Campaign
Leaving the Boat, Joriel looks at the gold filled carrieges and wonders where can he get that much gold, and how good would it look in his nonexisting armor and his weapons.
Slowly he got out of the boat and looked arround, checking the place for a good place to find an adventurer or entertainer's job. He decides to before that help out the other travellers to find stable feet.
Gideon watches as the ship pulls closer to the quaint harbour ahead. What a sorry excuse for a place, nothing like the capital he thinks to himself, the sea breeze brushing his thick golden hair lightly. He adjusts the leather strap holding his glaive over his shoulder as he watches them pull into port. At least we have some interesting tunes he ponders as the melodies are played out over the waters on Flynn's bagpipes. Who knew that such a dinful instrument could make a good tune, obviously it is the musician rather than the bagpipes.
As the ship pulls into the port and the gangplank touches land, Gideon grabs his pack to disembark. He looks over to the carriages of gold. "My word, the stories were not exaggerating the claim." He comments as he walks off. He looks around for a worker who is less busy to speak to, "You there, dockworker, please direct me to your mayor or other head of office for this town." He requests in a firm tone. "I am here on official business and do not wish to be delayed any further."
Dulcina is jumping up and down, looking over the side of the ship has it enters the port. "Wow, we are almost there, I can't wait. I've heard so many stories about the gold here, I didn't believe it but here we are." she looks around as she picks up her pack and scurries down the gang plank excititly, her bright red hair and big baby blue eyes are the first things that are noticed about the Halfling. She moves closer to the carriages. "Look there is so much gold, so much of it do you think I will get paid in gold, my family would be so surprised by this much gold." Dulcina looks around and then remembers why she is here."OH! THAT'S RIGHT. I have to find the boss, so I can find out about the mines." Dulcina sees the Half orc that is shouting orders and moves over to him. "Hey, Half orc guy listen, where is your boss I need to speak to him about the gold mines." She asks him.
Aust spent most of the sea trip at the very front of the ship. As a lover of nature, being kept inside the belly of a ship is not comforting. As they break through the fog, Aust speaking to himself but out loud, " Mother Mielikki, guide my path. Show me the forest and my foe that I may serve you best." Not giving too much care for the load of gold ore other than to take note the direction it came from and a quick thought as to the damage to the environment mining it must cause. As soon as he can get off the ship, he quickly does. Looking around the town for signs of trees and evidence of Goblins, Aust searches for direction and guidance to help this town. As he hears Dulcina talk to the Half orc, he decides to follow her for awhile.

As he hears Dulcina talk to the Half orc, he decides to follow her for awhile.
