Welcome to the world of Uvalli, a realm of adventure, magic, and secrets.
This thread is where I'll post rules, information about the world, and where any out of character discussion will happen. Please keep any posts in the story thread in character/related to current gameplay.
Gameplay Rules
We'll be using 5e. Any races, skills, and feats from official WotC books are viable
In general, there is no set order for posting. Post as often as you want for dialogue and exploration. You may roll preemptively for skill checks in various situations, though I may ask for a different skill check if I think something is more applicable. Otherwise I will prompt you for checks.
For combat, we will not roll initiative. I will let you know when initiative starts. From that point, each player may make a post describing what actions they want to take. Once you've made a post for a round, you must wait until I post again, telling you the results of your actions and taking a turn for the enemies. I will try to wait 24 hours between my turns to give all the players a chance to take a turn in each round.
In order to use a reaction, you will need to post before any other actions are taken that would contradict your choice.
It is up to the player to keep track of all items and gold. Honesty will be expected.
We may or may not use maps depending on the complexity of the encounter. If we do, I will upload and update an image for each round and post it on each of my turns.
More gameplay rules to be added as they come up.
Please read this thread for tips on how to roll dice in this game.
Please read over this thread for posting tips such as taking actions.
Please choose a font color for your character, and write any dialogue in this color to make reading the thread easier.
General Rules
You're expected to post 5-6 times a week. If you know you'll be away for a substantial amount of time, please give a heads up. Otherwise, M.I.A. characters will be removed from the game.
Don't contradict other people's actions, or control other people's characters, including via persuasion, intimidation etc. (magic is fair game, to a point)
Mature and darker content is okay, but please no excessive descriptions of sex or violence. I reserve the right to give you a warning if you're getting out of line, and remove you if you continue making other players uncomfortable.
Creating Characters
Please create your character using standard 5e character sheets. You can create them digitally or physical.
You will share your character sheet via a google drive folder. If you do not have a google account, please make one for ease of sharing any external documents.
The lands of Uvalli are rugged and mostly untamed, but relatively peaceful. One would barely be able to guess that the pastoral landscapes and primeval forests were once the battlefield of a massive, interplanar war. This conflict, now known as the Breach, was fought between immensely powerful entities. The war had been escalating for hundreds of years across several planes, until at it’s climax it tore across the material plane; the very center of the multiverse. This place, called Uvalli by the mortals who lived there, saw armies of undead risen by a council of liches from the Shadowfell, angelic battalions fighting on behalf of their gods on the upper planes, fiendish armies from the hells and the abyss, primordial titans raging from the elemental planes, and an alien host under the sway of tyrannical mindflayers from deep in the far realms. The struggle was so ancient, the alliances and grudges so convoluted that it seemed purposeless in its destruction, and today few know many details of this war.
Most mysterious is how it ended. Evidence of the centuries of warfare can still be found across the planes, which have mostly recovered after a couple thousand years of peace. But the knowledge of what finally caused an end to the Breach is lost to mortals. What is known is that as soon as the battle left Uvalli, a group of mages who came to be known as the Conclave beseeched divine and fey allies in order to protect their home. The result was a barrier around the material plane, called the Rift Lock. This shield, a combination of divine and arcane magic, has prevented any travel between the material plane and any of the inner or outer planes for the last 2000 years. It’s sometimes rumored that occasional holes in this barrier appear, but those rumors are always quickly quashed.
Locations
Solacus(Sah-lah-sus)
As people sought out protection from the remnant monsters and destruction of the Breach, they fled to the Conclave’s tower. The settlement that grew around this structure eventually grew into Solacus: a bastion of civilization, a gleaming metropolis, and the seat of power in Uvalli. Solacus is the only city in the realm, and it is here where a major portion of Uvalli’s population lives. The massive city is separated into various districts. The outermost is mostly residential. Wealth is concentrated in the center of the city, so these furthest neighborhoods are slums. Here you can find cultural neighborhoods of Tieflings and halflings. Further in, the buildings become nicer, but still modest, as you get closer to the mercantile district. Here there are neighborhoods of dwarves, gnomes, and dragonborn. Humans can be found living throughout the entire city, but they are most concentrated here as well. The markets of Solacus are vast, and one can find nearly anything they’d wish to buy within the city. The stores and restaurants get more expensive the closer you get to the center of the city, until you reach the garden district. This is the home of most of the high elves in the city, as well as affluent members of other races. A tall tower of gleaming silver rises from the very center of Solacus, the home of the Conclave, who act as the ruling body of the city, and effectively most of Uvalli.
Lorrel
A substantial logging town on the edge of the forest, Lorrel supplies a majority of the lumber used in Solacus. The mostly human settlement often comes under attack from orcs which live to the south, and has a tense truce with the wood elf tribes which live in Efferfrond.
Canden
A farming town nicknamed "The Pantry of Solacus", this agricultural settlement is surrounded by fields for crops and livestocks, as well as beautiful orchards. Despite being attacked by the occasional band of gnolls, it is one of the most peaceful places in Uvalli, and there are several estates which act as vacation homes for the city's elites.
Mirestone
This seaside town is the third largest settlement in Uvalli, and acts as the halfway point for trade between the rival cities of Solacus and Flamehold. Despite a gloomy vibe thanks to the thick fog that covers the dark stone streets and buildings every night, the town is surprisingly lively, it's bars and brothels filled with rowdy sailors.
New Primetra
As the dust settled after the Breach, the survivors of western Uvalli were cut off from the protection of the Conclave. In the war this region had been most terrorized by raging elementals, angered by the conflict. A unified force of genasi, triton, and goliaths formed to put to rest the entities which still roamed the deserts and battered the coasts. When the deed was done, the heroes of Al'Sevyr moved the remianing refugees into the ruins of Primetra, an ancient city that had been destroyed in the war. Now known as New Primetra, this fast growing city could soon rival the size and influence of Solacus. A diverse city, New Primetra still has a high population of genasi, who are near impossible to find in the rest of Uvalli. It also has populations of tritons and goliaths, though most of those people live nomadically in the sea and desert respetively, patrolling and fending off enemies that could threaten New Primetra.
The surrounding lands of Uvalli are pretty wild, dotted with small frontier towns, fishing and farming villages, and lots of ruins. I'll upload a map soon and update this post with more info, but feel free to create small settlements for your backstories.
Feel free to start using this thread to discuss characters with each other! Some overlap in classes is A-ok, and I'm not gonna say no if y'all wanna roll without a healer, but balance certainly doesn't hurt haha. Once you've got it all figured out, go ahead and upload a character sheet to the drive linked above, and tell me what color you'd like to use for your character's dialogue. Backstories can go on your sheet or uploaded as a separate doc.
I'm looking at either making a Halfling Bard that uses his "Luck" to influence the battlefield and social encounters, or a Monk that emphasizes the casting of spells. The Bard will benefit the group with utility and the Monk would be more damage output focused. I'll flesh out and complete the backgrounds once I finalize which character I'll be playing.
And since I'm first, I choose PURPLE for my dialogue color, as I am an Engineer in RL. :)
Hey everyone, thanks for the invite ! glad to be playing a game with you guys, I'll be playing Nodrus Brownbeard, the Dwarf Barbarian, currently making his character sheet and it will be uploaded when complete, should be fun :)
Hey there fellas! In the original recruitement thread it seemed like we would be a bit heavy on the melee side, but lets see what everyone wants to run with here. If its not too one-sided i'd really like to play that Soul Knife Mystic, or a wild magic sorcerer otherwise.
I think Sphynxyy already mentioned we'll be using colours, but only for the dialouge parts. Guess i'll stick with this stuff here if thats fine.
Hi everybody, I'm looking forward to playing with you all. I will be playing a half-elf champion fighter named Clermar Naero and will have his character sheet uploaded after work today. I'll take this color.
Another note for character creation: We'll be starting in the sprawling metropolis of Solacus. You find yourself in the city during the Arcanum Festival, a grand celebration of magic endorsed by the Conclave that takes place annually in the market district. There's food, a parade, and attractions based around each of the schools of magic. Whether you're a long time resident of the city who's seen this festival every year since you were a young child, or a traveler who just so happened to be caught in the festivities by surprise, you need to come up with a reason to be in Solacus at this moment. Please include this reason at the end of your backstory!
Nope, it's done. Ospos is uploaded and I have a good draft of his backstory submitted to the DM. I don't mind playing the bard... it'll be an interesting concept.
my character will be a Changeling Rogue/Warlock (mostly warlock levels as he progresses). his name is Void and he is currently suffering a mental break that has locked him out of his own mind, giving his persona/identities control of this actions and words.
i was thinking of using 3 different colours, one for each of his persona. this should make it easier to see who is talking.
currently his persona believe they are real, individual people. so when first meeting one of his persona, your characters wouldn't know he isn't what he appears (unless you have magic or the like, to get to the truth).
so at the moment I'm still working out the persona's, to make sure they fit in the cool world Sphynxyy has described.
Ok, I got the nod from the DM for my backstory. So here's a less detailed, less elaborate version in case others want to tie into mine:
Ospos Tallfellow is a smaller than average Halfling native to Solacus. He grew up in a poor district but managed to gain admittance to the College of Bards. However, he dropped out. He's managing to live a modest lifestyle simply busking on street corners, but is forever seeking a get rich quick scheme to retire in the real lap of luxury. His many attempts has led him into all kinds of social circles, and all have failed. He always manages to come out of sticky situations using his charm and wit, and the liberal use of certain influencing spells. His current get rich quick scheme is to land a big adventuring job and score a big paycheck!
Ospos is relatively young, for a Halfling. He would have a full head of brown hair, but he keeps his head shaved to better fit his stylish hats. He's trying to grow some sideburns, but they're on the patchy side. His clothes mimic the style of the wealthier gentry, but tend slightly towards more vivid colors and don't compliment his naturally tan complexion.
Ospos carries an old ratty bagpipe, a toy but not a toy that he's had for decades and is reluctant to let go. However, he currently has a very nice quality drum and can slap out some complex beats that always impress. He has also been seen with Flute and Viol, however he is currently without them after having them pawned for coin.
Void was a simple Changeling charlatan and thief. He had worked up a few persona with identities so he could relieve people of their money and possessions.
While working for some local criminals, creating forged documents, Void, under the persona of Thallan Mirazana (High Elf scribe and document forger), saw an opportunity to make some extra money.
Going on a hunch from the information the criminals had provided, for the documents requested, Void was able to find a stash of stolen artefacts, in a riverside warehouse.
As Void, again in the guise of Thallan Mirazana, perused the items for something to sneak out with, the criminals turned up and spotted Void. In panic, Void grabbed an old tome from the pile of artefacts and made a break for it.
A Wizard among the group of criminals, let off a fireball at Void as he run for one of the windows. the explosion threw Void out of the window and into the river, where he was carried away by the current.
while Void was floating down river with the tome held tightly in his hands, a voice began to whisper in this mind.
"you.....you are mine....you are fertile ground...i will grow in your ground"
without fully understanding what was happening an otherworldly power reached into Voids mind and planted something there.
the next day Bram Farrow awoke on the shores of the river realising that his friend and companion, Thallan Mirazana, had been killed by the criminals he had been working for. taking the tome in his hand, Bram swore he would one day get revenge for his dead friend.
Void is currently trapped in his own mind, the seed of some elder god growing within. outwardly Void is always one of his 3 remaining persona's.
Frank Hardy: Wood elf rogue. Quick with his fingers, a shadow in the dark. Frank is afraid that the criminals who killed his friend will come looking for him, to get revenge. he is always looking for danger, ever ready to fight or run if cornered. others would do well to leave a little room between themselves and this one, or they may loose some coin, or worse, a finger.
Franz Harrington: Human wizard. Heir of the Harrington family business. Franz' whole family was killed and their family business taken by a rival family, the Bannaford's. Franz was with his wizarding tutor, when the killings went down. he run for his life when the news of the tragedy arrived. Franz' has taken up the life of adventuring in the hope that one day, he will have both the money and the power (and hopefully courage) to take back what was stolen and have his revenge. Franz is pompous and arrogant to any he sees as his lessers. for his enemies he has a cutting tongue and insults to spare. but if the going gets tough and it looks like defeat is imminent, Franz will run and save his own hide.
Bram Farrow: Half-elf bard. the heart and soul of his group of friends. Bram was born to farmers, but couldn't conform to that life, and set out to find adventure and sing a song about it afterwards. Bran is the one who holds his group of friends together, after Thallan Mirazana was killed. Franz is too 'high-class' for his own good, and would probably get himself killed, if Bram wasn't there to help him out. Frank would descend into darkness and never be seen again, if Bram didn't keep him in the light. Bram worries the most for Frank, he doesn't look to be taking the death of Thallan, too well.
all 3 of the persona's believe they travel together everywhere. they subconsciously cast Silent Image to create other persona, when they need to see them, or be seen with them. most of the time, the other 2 are just out of sight. around a corner, over a hill, in a nearby shop, always nearby, or catching up. all of the 3 persona's automatically rationalize or hallucinate away any discrepancies with reality.
When Void sleeps he transforms back and forth between the 3 persona's and himself, each appearing different. Frank curls up into a fetal position and sometime whimpers. Franz has a concerned look on his face and sometimes mumbles unintelligently to himself. Bram usually looks content, with just a hint of a smile at the corners of his mouth, but sometimes a look of sadness will overtake him. when Void's true form appears, he looks distraught, almost manic. he will often make sounds of panic and fear, and sometimes loudly call out for help.
unless Void is woken out of his mental prison, while he sleeps in his true form, he will continue to be trapped until the seed planted there has germinated (level 3 warlock, unlock Pact of the Tome).
Short(er) version:
Void is trapped in his own mind, and his persona have taken over. there are 3 persona and they believe they are real, individual people and that they travel together.

Frank would descend into darkness and never be seen again, if Bram didn't keep him in the light. Bram worries the most for Frank, he doesn't look to be taking the death of Thallan, too well.
Speech text colours: Frank Hardy: "got to keep a watch out, never know when someone's looking to get a piece of your hide." Franz Harrington: "do you know who your talking to! how dare you be so disrespectful!" Bram Farrow: "wow, what a beautiful day! this is going to be a great day, i can feel it in my bones!"
Hi everyone, I originally had an idea to play a human fighter but if we're melee heavy I wouldn't mind playing something else. What roles might yet need to be filled?

I've already created quite an extensive backstory for my Monk, which doesn't really fit in the world as described. We also have 2 melee already.
I will go forward with the College of Lore Bard. His name is Ospos Tallfellow, a Lightfoot Halfling with a grandiose opinion of himself.
I'll get the Character Sheet uploaded ASAP.
I can always switch from my barbarian idea to artificer if we have too many melee, you can keep your monk if you wish Kerrec
Nope, it's done. Ospos is uploaded and I have a good draft of his backstory submitted to the DM. I don't mind playing the bard... it'll be an interesting concept.
alrighty then, as long as we're all happy, Bards are always, lets say, interesting.

Ospos carries an old ratty bagpipe, a toy but not a toy that he's had for decades and is reluctant to let go. Frank Hardy:
Wood elf rogue.
Franz Harrington:
Human wizard.
Bram Farrow:
Half-elf bard. the heart and soul of his group of friends.

Hi everyone, I originally had an idea to play a human fighter but if we're melee heavy I wouldn't mind playing something else. What roles might yet need to be filled?
Y'all are definitely lacking on healing, but seem to be very well rounded beyond that.
