This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
The door opens inwards towards you. Liarin has time to summon the snake if she wishes, and Xanrym may cast Minor Illusion. I'd probably ask for a Deception check from Xanrym for that to work:

OK. Then he'll have to make the curtain of thick, thorny vines far enough back from the door that the door won't hit them as it swings open. Otherwise, that would definitely ruin the illusion. He reasons that even if Garath Primo is in the next room and immediately suspects that there's something suspicious about the vines, the illusion will hopefully cause a moment's confusion and delay before he can cast a spell at the first person in their party.
(OOC: If someone doesn't disbelieve the illusion, they cannot see through it. And if they take a round the examine the illusion, that's one round when they're not immediately attacking the party. Of course, once Avery or Liarin moves through the illusion and into the room, the illusion will be shattered. It's just intended as a defense against an opponent getting a turn before anyone in the party can act.)
So the illusion goes up and nothing happens. As no one is looking into the room beyond at the moment, you don't see anything but you hear a deep male voice say, "What is that? Vines?"
Theldrin and everyone else behind the illusion can see through and inspects the occupants of the next room. This is a long room whose walls are covered by wooden panels. At the far end is a raised wooden dais with an altar supporting a statue of the reptile god — a snake with a human head. Next to the altar is a man dressed in clerical robes who seems to be expecting you. The shadowy human form of what might be his assistants can be seen skulking behind the statue of the reptile god. He is facing you and looks somewhat confused.
You can all get a round to act before we roll initiative.

Xanrym assumes that the man in clerical robes must be Garath Primo. Based on what the will-o-wisp told them earlier, it sounds like this area of the dungeon is Garath's personal domain. The clerical robes are also a good hint that this is the last of the four Naga's Teeth, matching what they saw on the bas-relief in the room upstairs.

Xanrym says, "Now!", signaling the party to attack.
Xanrym stands up to his full height to get a better view over his illusion and casts Silence into the room. The area of effect is a sphere with 20 ft. radius, and Xanrym centers the sphere about 15 ft. in front of the back wall in the center (east-to-west). That way, the AoE should cover basically the entire 30 ft x 30 ft north end of the room. The "front" of the area of effect is an arc that starts ~15 ft away from the door.
After he casts the spell, Xanrym takes out his crossbow.
Movement: None. Remain in the hallway. Action: Cast spell (LVL 2 slot) Silence, 20-foot sphere positioned as described above. For the duration, no sound can be created within or pass through the area of effect. Casting a spell that includes a verbal component is impossible there. Free Action: Talking. Object interaction: equip crossbow.

Theldrin readies a Fire Bolt if anything that seems aggressive comes through the doorway and Xanrym's illusion, towards the party.
Avery moves so he is not seen from the door's opening as it swings into the room, ready to attack if need be
You open the door as Xanrym summons the wall of thorny vines on the other side: DC 11 Deception Check for Xanrym: 12
So the illusion goes up and nothing happens. As no one is looking into the room beyond at the moment, you don't see anything but you hear a deep male voice say, "What is that? Vines?"
You have a moment to prepare yourselves or take an action before initiative is called.
Avery moves to a position of advantage by the door, without compromising the illusion or revealing himself
If Theldrin can get a view through the illusion, he will see if he can spot the source of the voice.
Perception: 13
