Xanrym shouts his encouragement to Avery: "A knight will always triumph over such a brute as this!" But he worries that the owlbear will rip Avery to shreds if they don't kill it quickly. He casts a spell and summons a small whirlwind of slicing claws around the owlbear. The cloud lashes out, slicing into the owlbear's back.
Xanrym implores Liarin to join the fight: "Liarin, quickly! Avery won't last long against that thing!" as he looks to move to a spot with better cover from the owlbear. (If the monster kills Avery, Xanrym doesn't want it to be able to charge at him unimpeded.)
Movement: Xanrym wants to remain 30 - 40 feet away from the owlbear, but if there's a tree or boulder nearby that could provide some cover from the owlbear, he'll move there. Action: Cast spell (LVL 2 slot) Cloud of Daggers (flavored here as a cloud of claws) Conjures a whirlwind of slashing claws in a 5-foot Cube centered on the owlbear's back (to avoid Avery). Each creature in that area takes damage: 9 (slashing) A creature also takes this damage if it enters the Cube or ends its turn there or if the Cube moves into its space. A creature takes this damage only once per turn. Bonus Action: Grant bardic inspiration to Avery to boost his attack (or his attempt to escape the owlbear's grapple). The target can roll 1d6 once (in the next 10 mins) and add the number to one ability check, attack roll, or saving throw. Free Action: Talking to Liarin.

(OOC: @drumdigby - Note that there is no saving throw for this damage. The owlbear takes the damage, and it'll take damage again at the end of its turn if it doesn't move out of the 5-ft cube AoE.)

Theldrin moves back so he's hopefully out of attack range from the owlbear, then takes a deep breath and concentrates on sending 3 rays of fire at the beast.
But is unable to carry him, instead it uses it's Rend ability as a Bonus Action to wrench a Grappled creature (Avery) around a bit before Disengaging and running back into the woods.
Avery makes a DC 15 STR Save: 14 taking 4 Slashing damage on a fail, half as much on a success.

Round 3: Xanrym
Xanrym jogs back into the camp, trying to keep the owlbear in range and already loading his crossbow. Perhaps he fears that the owlbear wasn't retreating but was just trying to circle around and pick off one of the two children from Orlane?
If the owlbear is still within 30-ft from the current location of the whirlwind of slicing claws that Xanrym had summoned, we haves a hand and points toward the owlbear. The whirlwind of slashing magic vanishes and reappears right where the owlbear is, slicing into the monster again.
If the owlbear is more than 30-ft from the current location of the whirlwind of slicing claws that Xanrym had summoned, he instead calls out a parting insult about the ridiculous nature of its hybrid appearance.
Then Xanrym asks, "Avery, are you still alive there? Mayor Ormond?"
Movement: Moving 30-ft toward Avery and the direction that the owlbear went. Action: Either Option 1: Use his action to "teleport" the Cloud of Daggers cube AoE up to 30-ft to the owlbear's square. The owlbear takes damage: 6 (magical slashing). or Option 2: Action: Cast spell Vicious Mockery at the owlbear WIS 14 save or owlbear takes 2 (psychic) damage and has disadvantage on the next attack roll it makes before the end of its next turn. Free Action: Talking
The Owlbear hoots in pain at the claws, but is still able to run, leaving a trail of blood behind it. Mayor Ormond gives the thumbs up in bewilderment as he checks on the two children.

(OOC: I can't imagine that Avery would pursue the owlbear in his current condition.)
Round 4: Xanrym
Xanrym casts Healing Word on Avery, healing him for +[Tooltip Not Found] HP and then stands and listens for a moment to make sure that he doesn't hear the owlbear returning.
Avery gets up, wipes himself off and recovers his sword and rejoins the party. "Thanks for the healing, that gets the blood going, doesn't it? Though I prefer a good night sleep."

Xanrym looks at Avery's wounds as the knight approaches their campfire. He laughs weakly at Avery's comment: "Heh. You could say that, but it's best to have the blood going inside the body and not all over the ground!"
Xanrym calls out to Mayor Ormond and the children to come out from hiding. "We chased it off. An owlbear! I've never seen one before, but I've heard the stories. Ferocious creatures!" He glances at Avery's deep wounds but tries to soothe the mayor and the children. "I guess it's used to easier prey -- beasts of the forest or a lone peddler and his pony -- not this naga bane," he gestures to the party. Xanrym knows that they almost lost Avery, but he's trying to convince the mayor and the children that they're safe and well-protected.
Xanrym talks to the others and suggests that they're probably relatively safe. The owlbear has probably killed or chased off any other threat in the area. He's still worried about Avery's wounds, in case anything else surprises them over night, and he suggests that Liarin creates at least one batch of goodberries to help Avery heal more before he falls asleep. Xanrym finally settles back down to sleep, keeping his crossbow and bolts nearby.
(OOC: I guess we're ready to finish our Long Rest and keep moving through the Dim Forest. The party could try to track down the owlbear's den and kill it in the morning, but since our goal is just to get the mayor and children back to Orlane, I don't think that any of us would risk that kind of detour. I think that we'll already be on half-rations -- or relying on goodberries from Liarin for sustenance -- since we have 3 extra people to feed.)

Scorching Ray
Attack: 26 Damage: 18
Attack: 13 Damage: 5
Attack: 15 Damage: 8
(OOC: Ugh, well those are some crappy rolls. Wish I would have chosen a different spell now LOL)
One of the Scorching Ray's hit.
Avery and Liarin are still up. Avery is currently Grappled by the Owlbear.
Avery will fight the Owl Bear, Attack: 21, damage 6
Liarin throws a Starry Wisp at the Owlbear, but the spell misses.
At this point the Owlbear makes a Morale check, DC 10 WIS: 8
The Owlbear breaks and runs, it tries to carry Avery with it back to it's cave, DC 15 Athletics Check: 10
You all are up. The Owlbear has retreated back into the woods after dropping Avery. Are you going to follow it?
(OOC: the owlbear is no longer in sight and cannot be targeted by ranged attacks unless we pursue it into the woods?)
We’d say it currently has 3/4 cover.
