Listening to Vilk words, Thalressa nods in agreement. "It certainly would make sense that the goblins are being controlled by someone... or something else with this sort of erratic behavior. Typically Goblins are not mountain creatures from my experience, and it would my assumption that it would take more than two of them to carry the mayor off, so that leaves my deduction to be the dense woods." She sits down and begins to ponder a little harder, "But if we pick the wrong path it could mean not finding the Mayor again. Would we still be able to make it to Ridgewind should the worst come about?"
"What about this? We run down the group heading for the forest - if the mayor's with them, great! If not, we convince one of them to tell us where he's being taken."

Vilk, stopped what he was doing. That answer was so simple, the shear genius of it! "Yes! That would solve all our problems!" Getting up and becoming more excited. "While tracking for the goblins we could also forage for food and gather water! That should not be too hard. Yes I like this plan very much!"

"If that is to be our plan, we might get on with it. Every second we spend here is another yard they gain." Ivor stated, voicing his agreement in a gruff way, one that hardly revealed the liking of the plan he had. What could be better then a head-on charge? If the mayor happened to be with the group, even better. As far as he knew, the goblins had some leader and so the forest path was the decoy, being the best choice. But Ivor wasn't one to overthink things.

As Vilk returns to the group from inspecting the tracks, he notices that strangely the two goblins had the heaviest footprints while the other three seem to be in a rush. He also now notices that there are no tracks from the Mayor and that only 5 of the goblins went near the tent while three other sets are fresher and never went near the tent, but went near the supplies. The newer ones however get mixed in with the foot of snow after exiting the area around the campfire and can't be determined which way they went. (The campsite is mostly cleared out due to a dying fire during the snow fall)
Two heavier goblin impressions (still heading west back the way we came?)
Three rushing about...
Three that came later whose trail Vilk loses in the snow (are these the ones headed towards forest or mountains?)

OOC: two heading to the west have heavier footprints, while the ones to the Southeast and Northwest are in groups of three. That is it. They are still going the same ways, but you have to work out why this is like this. The three that he loses, he can't tell which way they are going, they might not still be grouped together when they leave, both groups of three goblin trails seem to have lighter and faster footprints, might mean something. Try and understand what this means. I have given you a puzzle, now you need to solve it.
PS: No more survival or investigation checks, just think about it.
[OOC] I get that the two heavier ones are carrying the mayor. I'm confused about which set of tracks he lost - the ones headed SE or NW?

OOC: I think the heavy tracks may have been caused by the two goblins carrying rocks or something. I think that maybe the three goblins with light tracks took the Mayor (maybe with the aid of some magic from someone) and the two goblins doubled back and joined them later, but we will lose their tracks if we follow them. I believe this simply because it makes sense for the heavier tracks to be caused by goblins carrying the mayor, and so I found a solution that made no sense because this is D&D and the logical choice is never the answer. (Well, it is, sometimes...) But that's not what Ivor thinks...
IC: "We should follow the three goblins into the forest. Two goblins isn't enough of a fight, and even if they have the mayor, some old fashioned interrogation will get us his location easily enough." Ivor says, clearly irritated by the lack of action and puzzled looks his fellow travelers had about them. They hadn't yet earned his loyalty and trust, forged by the strike of steel and flowing of blood that is battle and war. And so he didn't respect their standing about at all. As far as Ivor was concerned, it was a weakness.

"Why would they take him back towards town? I don't believe the little green monsters have the brain in them to cook up such a plan as deception on this level." Thalressa will ponder on it. You have known Thalressa to be quiet the trickster herself at times, so to see this level of thought in Goblins likely intrigues her greatly.
"How far could they have gotten, the obvious choice is the two, though if we go with the theory that someone else has made up this plan then going with the forest 3 would make sense. We could split up into two groups and track both sides down. Hoping that one of the ways doesn't have an ambush laying in wait for us. But the note makes them seem more along the lines of your average Goblin, so lets track down the weighted pair is my vote."
Kazander glances back and forth between the gruff warrior and the otherworldly beauty, an expression of dismay furrowing his brow. Thinking, strategizing - these are not his strengths. "The boldness of the dwarf's plan quickens my heart, but your wisdom, Thalressa, makes sense to my mind. What say you, Vilk? Since there are goblins to stick at the end of each path, I'll go wherever you all decide!"

Not being one to delay any longer Vilk began to pack up his gear. "Come, we can figure out if we made the correct decision later. As Aramalian has pointed out we only need one too tell us what we need to know. The other can be used to persuade, by any means necessary." Picking up his gear, Vilk began down the path with the 2 goblins.
