To Doozey, alongside the conclusion bloomed a sense of relief. Yet even then, he made a mental note to be more mindful in the future. Eventually. For now, once the matter of payment had been settled, a more at piece Doozey would genuinely indulge her (and by extension more willingly the other villagers) should she have questions, but at a slower pace using the parchment. As for Biscuit, he just sat by happy to receive the absent-minded pets of the halfling as he wrote down responses.

"On the house," Grinna replies to Utar's comment as the entire tavern goes silent in surprise as a reaction to the halfling innkeeper's three words. Three seconds later, the silence is replaced with some loud laughter. "They did it!" one villager yells. "The impossible has happened," another shouts. "They got Grinna to give something out at no charge!" a third one confirms. Grinna is visibly furious. She picks random villagers to yell at for the next several minutes.
Alma very faintly thanks Doozey for indulging her and remains seated next to him and the mastiff for as long as the pair permits. She seems to enjoy watching the loud celebrations around her, but prefers to remain mostly quiet herself.
The villager that receives Neya's reply raises a mug and screams in celebration. As he moves out of the way, Neya then notices Denae talking to a much quieter and solemn group of individuals over in one corner of the tavern. After a few more words, those individuals thank Denae, some even hug her, and then they depart. Denae turns to notice that Neya is observing her and then approaches her sister with an explanation: "Those were the families of the three who didn't return. Ulmo, Ijay, and Fren were their names. It will take time for those three families to grief properly, but they were all glad for the town overall." After a pause, she looks Neya in the eye and sincerely says: "Thank you for bringing me along this quest. Having passed by Kabel's Hill before, being able to come back here and help these people... Thank you."
(OOC: I'm happy to RP some more, but let me know once you are ready to call it a night here at the inn.)
"You are very welcome. We certainly helped this town in both large and small ways," Neya says to Denae. "Thank you for coming along with us. I don't know if we would be able to resolve it as swiftly without your help. We might have come back with only news of the pact, as far as we know."
After Denae responds (if any), Neya's ready to hit the hay. It might be fatigue, it might be her payment to Jeny. Nevertheless, she'll call it a night.
Neither Doozey or Biscuit have the heart or mind to shoo the girl, as the relatively companionable silence suited them just fine. In time things had to wind down, and so it is with next to no resistance Doozey fell to the siren call for slumber. Before taking his leaving of the dining area however, he is sure to bid Alma a good night. As for Biscuit, tempted though he was to follow after his halfling brother, so long as it was possible to beg more treats and keep a watch over the celebrating villagers, Biscuit would do just that.
(OOC: I'm good to call it a night.)

Denae nods in gratitude back at Neya. Letting silence end that topic of conversation, Denae then gives a directional nod towards Utar and advises her Sister: "It looks like the big guy is ready to call it a night. You should claim your rest too. I'll keep watch over this group for a bit longer." If Neya turns to look at her half-orc friend, she would see him coming to terms with not getting a final response from Grimma, who continues to be too busy yelling at random tavern patrons. Utar approaches, lets Neya know that their room and board for the night is covered, and then moves toward Doozey to share the same information. The halfling has been enjoying the mostly silent but friendly company of the young girl Alma for some time now, but it has been a long day. Slumber soon calls, although Biscuit remains on the tavern floor with Denae for a while longer. It is too easy of a task for the large mastiff to claim morsels of food with so many happy folks around willing to supply them.
Soon, you all claim a well deserved night of sleep.
(OOC: This long rest marks the end of this episode's Act III, simply titled "The Quivering Forest". You may each add 9,800 XP to your character sheets. More details will be posted in the OOC Chat. Let us keep going a bit further into this episode's epilogue with your return to Phlan. Let's start with you describing what CRAP's next morning looks like.)
Despite the comforts of a warm bed, or perhaps because of it, Doozey's sleep was anything but restful at the tavern. For unlike the evenings spent in the forest days prior, the demand for a certain level vigilance even at rest within the wild borders never allowed for a deep enough slumber to truly dream and reflect. And had his nightmares truly had it their way, mayhaps he might not have awoken the next day at all.
But as feelings of a great weight on his chest grew too impossible to ignore, the stoutling instinctively began to rouse in the morning, blinking away tears and grumbling something out incoherent as questing hands sought to shift the weight. A nigh impossible task without the gauntlets on hand. But eventually, all the haphazard attempts is enough to get Biscuit to finally roll his big butt body away until he hit the ground with a thump and a yelp.
Startled, Doozey snaps fully awake with teeth bared, claws out and poised to strike, and the mostly dried out sweat caking his body. However, given enough time to catch his breath and eventually his frantic search for enemies concludes with him half-heartedly glaring at an already back to dozing Biscuit. "Every time wi'ya. Every chime!" He further groused. But only deaf ears seemed to accept the words. So following a defeated sigh, Doozey soon rolled out of bed looking exhausted but determined to get through all the usual morning motions (including eventually waking Biscuit with promises of breakfast). And all the more determined still when even the most basic exercise of moving about seemed to chase away the nightmarish memories that lingered well after he awoke....
In time, Doozey and Biscuit find their way out to the tavern proper, only to immediately find booth to crawl in and a table to rest sleepy heads upon.
Denae goes to bed late. She might have allowed herself to drink a bit more than she should have. She stumbles to her bed and worries not about removing the most uncomfortable pieces of her clothing or cleaning the caked mud off of her bare feet. She falls asleep almost as soon as she hits the hay mattress.
Despite going to bed late, the half-elf manages to wake up relatively early. She notices her carelessness in prepping for slumber the previous night and rights her wrongs. She asks for hot water for a bath, which Hupe is more than happy to provide, and takes the opportunity to wash not only herself but her clothes as well. Even though the extra steps added time to her morning routine, she still manages to be the third party member to reach the breakfast table, beaten to her destination only by Doozey and Biscuit.
Denae didn't drink enough to suffer from a severe hangover, but she couldn't quite prevent a mild headache. Unless Doozey strikes a conversation, she says little to the halfling at the table besides a "good morning" greeting, preferring to focus on whatever quiet time with her headache she can muster.
(OOC: Giving a chance for @MB and @Drache to describe their morning.)
Utar sleeps well, waking late into the morning. The Quivering Forest felt oppressive at times, almost as if the trees and woodland creatures knew CRAP were interlopers and wanted them gone as quickly as possible. He can't claim not to be glad to be outside of it.
Having donned his armour and packed his belongings, he makes the bed and readies the room to be turned over later by either Hupe or Grinna. Heading downstairs, he greets his companions. "So, what happened last night? I hit the hay early, was a good time had?"
Neya's sleep was deep and dreamless (as far she remembers). While her waking up is more groggy than usual, she does have a sense of relief from not having any fey pranking her during the night. Nursing a dull pain in her head, soon musters the will to pull herself out of bed.
She meets up with rest of the group, sits down and barely gets out "coffee..." with a half-raised hand.
Denae only grunts in response to Utar and hums in agreement to Neya's request.
The Brightbells are well accustomed to serving sleepy and/or hungover folks in the morning. There are a good smattering of them in the tavern with CRAP. The halflings serve a perfectly warm bowl of porridge to each CRAPer, including Biscuit, a basket of breads, and table-servings of cheeses, fruit, and even some "morning vegetables" as Hupe calls them (boiled artichokes and carrots). Upon request for more protein, they can also offer boiled eggs. Once again, the food is simple but quite delicious.
Unless the party would like to linger in Kabel's Hill for a bit, it seems the townsfolk are ready to go back to their normal lives after a night of celebration for most. Nonetheless, it is also clear that the town needs to do some grieving. Hupe and Grinna are available for conversation, but inevitably resume their daily tasks amidst voiced shows of gratitude to the party.
When asked, Denae reminds the group that the trek back to Phlan should take about a day and a half. She recommends leaving the town to its mundane routine sooner rather than later, but leaves the decision to the three of you.
Still enjoying the trappings of being in a more civilised environment, Utar grazes on the morning vegetables and fruits. Such fare is unlikely to be available until they make it back to Phlan, so there is likely one more night of rations ahead.
"I agree. Best set out early and let Kabel's Hill get on with life as it is now."
"Very well," Denae says after taking a long swig of cold water. "Finish your meals and find me outside once you are ready. I need some fresh air." She cleans her mouth with the back of her hand and walks outside, letting her bare toes sink into the mud just outside the tavern's entrance.
You don' t feel rushed and finish your respective meals at your own pace. Both Hupe and Grinna make sure to stop to check if you need anything else and and wish you good travels. They invite you to come back to Kabel's Hill and The Leaky Bucket anytime you wish. Once outside, you also find Alma and Ferguson waiting for you, so they, too, can spend a few more minutes with you and wish you a safe return to Phlan. Alma gifts Doozey a wildflower, giving an identical one to Biscuit as well. Ferguson gives the mastiff a nice belly rub and tells Utar that he is going to grow to be as strong as him, and as fast as Neya.
Once you are ready to depart, Denae leads you back to the road and toward Phlan. You leave behind the wildflower-scented air around Kabel's Hill and the earthy aroma of the surrounding farmland. Your trek takes you down a beaten dirt path surrounded by rolling hills and meadows dotted with colorful blossoms. Once about half-a-day has passed, during the trip's lunch break, Denae interrupts the silence: "If I remember correctly, we kept a good pace during our initial approach to the town and managed to make the trip between Phlan and Kabel's Hill in a bit more than one day. That was faster than I had expected. Should we try to pick up our pace this time too?"
Back at the Leaky Bucket, Utar thanks Grinna and Hupe for their hospitality and hopes that Grinna doesn't now find her reputation as the hard nosed landlady in bits. Once outside, he delights as Ferguson outlines his future plans, but reminds the youth that a sharp mind and good heart are important too. Calling back towards the boy Utar reminds him "Say your prayers and eat your vitamins!"
Once away from the village and once the bucolic beauty of the countryside has worn away, Utar nods his agreement to Danae's question, "Show us the meaning of haste."
Truth be told, even with a warm meal in his belly Doozey seemed content to quietly go along with the party's decision without offering much in the way of input. Unlike Biscuit, who most enthusiastically "BOOF"'d twice in approval, before stubbornly nudging Doozey's arm until the halfling gave an added thumbs up. Though almost immediately after Doozey is rolling his eyes as he departs from the dining area to go grab his things prior to their departure.
Doozey winds up gone for maybe a minute or two more than anyone might expect. But when he returns, it is with Halvin's cloak donned and a bit more pep to his step by all initial appearances. The veneer crumbles a little once outside however, as Alma's gift leaves him surprised for a time there. Yet left to reboot for a moment, it is a gift soon reciprocated in the offering of an old hunting knife from the halfling ranger alongside a small smile.
Meanwhile, Biscuit happily indulges in the shower of affection from Ferguson until a sharp whistle from Doozey spurs the mastiff to give brief chase after the departing group. "Mm. Fass as birb fye, yea." Is Doozey's reply to Denae.
Utar guesses that Grinna will have to spend some time fixing the damage to her reputation. It is likely she'll have to tighten her grip on the townsfolk for a bit. They will have to deal with the consequences of their (her) actions.
Ferguson nods along with Utar's last few suggestions. "Prays and vitamins," he repeats waving goodbye.
Alma accepts the gifted knife from Doozey and silently puts it away. Is this the beginning of a roguish lifestyle for the quiet girl?
ON THE ROAD
"Very well," Denae says accepting the challenge implied in Utar's words and echoed by Doozey. "Let's get this show on the road." She then makes it her next mission to arrive in Phlan before the end of the day, as Neya pondered.
Picking up your pace makes it so your movement is more noticeable. Dust rises high on your wake, your gear rattles as you power-walk, and you can't help but start panting in the latter stages of your hike. You hear the not-so-far-away howls of wolves and the croaks of giant frogs, but no beast or highwayman interrupts your progress this time. The road stretches before you, becoming wider and better maintained. The soothing sounds of nature—the chirping of crickets, the distant rustle of leaves—soon give way to the busier noises of Phlan's vicinity and honest rural work, including the breaking of ground done by horse-pulled plows and the cluck of chickens.
IN PHLAN
The sun is just about the hide beyond the horizon as CRAP approaches the gate. You know you have arrived mere minutes before the gate is closed for the night. Black Fist guards usher you inside so they can complete their gate-closing task sooner rather than later. You find yourselves in Podol Plaza, where today's bazaar is in the middle of being shut down for the day. You are tired and ready to go home to a warm meal prepared by Sagin, but you can't help but notice that, even during closing time, the plaza's bazaar looks emptier than usual. There are not as many crates about, some stalls were never set up for the day, and those merchants who are in the midst of putting their goods away seem to have much fewer of them to offer than you remember them having.
Even once the journey started to take its toll on Doozey, something about the extended exertion, as well as the promise of returning home kept the halfling invigorated from start to end. All the while his mind remained mercifully free of the dark clouds that haunted him ever since all the various revelations that came with honoring Witchthorn's initial request. Knowing deep down the feelings couldn't last forever hardly held any sway even in the corner of his heart or the back of his mind, for he needed but sneak a look to his fellow CRAP members and be assured all would be well in the end.
In Phlan...
Tired as he was, Doozey perked up a little at the changes to the Bazaar. But with his whole current speech impediment, he had neither the will or the patience to bug any patrol guardsman about the matter, let alone one of the merchants closing up shop. Though as his mind wandered in the direction of past events in town, his eyes briefly widen at some epiphany, before closing alongside a muttering of "No Good" in sylvan. But the group had to get home and leave tomorrows concern for tomorrow. So the halfling at least stayed quiet, and Biscuit looked only mildly confused over the diminished activity prior to eventually putting it all out of mind.
