"Thanks Glynt, the glaive would be good. Portia could you and take a look at this? I can help but when it comes to this stuff I think it's best if you take the lead."
Portia was starting to struggle with seeing until the torch was lit. Upon being shown the trapdoor, she will go and try and disarm it, with the advantage from Xanth's help. "I have set traps before. And disarmed others. Not any this old though so I can't make any promises."
Rolled on sheet. If sleight of hand, 25 (base rolls of 19 and 20) She is proficient with (and has) thieves' tools, so same answer if it is a dex check with them instead.
PORTIA first notes that there is a catwalk that would allow passage across the pit area to the door. She then deftly determines that if creature steps on the trapdoor, the lid flips open, dumping the creature into the pit. She also determines that she is able to jam the lid open or shut. Her choice. Checking things out from XANTH's lighted glaive, she sees that there is a Giant Rat in the pit, along with a dead Goblin, and other skeletons and debris. She quickly closes the lid when she sees the Giant Rat scurry up the wall toward her.
(By the way, and some of you likely know this, Xanth could have helped Portia with an Investigation check, but not assist with Portia's Dex check, as Xanth does not have the skills to use Thieves Tools. However, Portia's base rolls were high enough to have her will with the trap.)
Portiawill jam the trapdoor shut because of the giant rat. "We have two options. I can either reset the trap so there is less chance of goblins or rats approaching from behind. Or I can leave it jammed shut so that if we have to make a speedy retreat, we do not fall victim to the trap."
No one else notices anything unusual about the door as well and opens it to reveal a circular area that is cobbled with cracked granite, upon which sprawl the bodies of four goblins, apparently slain in combat. One corpse stands with its back against the western wall, the spear that killed it still skewering it and holding it upright. Three wooden doors lead from this area. A hollow tower of loose masonry reaches thirty feet into the air, but the intervening floors and stairs are gone, except for a couple of crumbled ledges.
I will take a non-passive look at the door - listening to see if there's any sounds from behind it, then I will check it for traps:
Perception check for listening to the door : 12
Check for Traps on the Door (I AM proficient in Thieves Tools - is this a Dex Check + Proficiency Modifier?, let me know if it's something different) : 22
(If a trap or lock is found, then the proficiency with Thieves Tools comes into play to disarm or unlock. However, because you too are proficient and possess Thieves Tools then you will be able to work with Portia to give whoever has the highest check (Usually DEX) Advantage on the rolls. But in the meantime, our post likely crossed, and no one found anything unusual about the door and opened it to reveal the circular area noted on the map.)
(As an example, when Portia checked the trapdoor, the DEX check was required to deal with it. Portia has a +3 Dex and would be primary to Glynt's +2 Dex. But Glynt could have aided Portia giving her Advantage on the roll. As it stands, Portia's rolls were high enough to do her will with the trapdoor even to the point of disabling the trap. Swift may be better to confirm this, but I do think you get your Proficiency Modifier to the roll. I am still learning some of the differences between 5e and the third editions (3.5, Pathfinder) I am more familiar with.)
(If a particular tool/skill is relevant and you have proficiency you can proficiency on top of the base roll. The reason I add skill there is that although each skill has a standard ability assigned automatically, a DM can ask for an alternative ability with that skill, e.g. a strength(intimidation) check instead of charisma, if a barbarian is trying to intimidate using their muscles.)
Portia will enter the new room and looks around noting the exits (I assume the three doors includes the one we entered with based on the map). She assumes that whoever killed the goblins has already taken any valuables they might have had, so instead she will check the northern door, partly for traps, and partly just to see if it has been used recently. (D20 roll: 14. Assuming it is investigation, will be +6 so 20, otherwise the appropriate modifier can be taken from the sheet)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Glynt, being the very definition of a nosey Gnome, does rummage through through the bodies of the killed Goblins. Checking the pockets, Looking for hidden pouches, inspecting the wounds to see if they are all from similar weapons, I will also try to gather together all the weapons I can find, mainly looking for Daggers and a spear. If there is only the spear in the wall I will try to wiggle the spear off the wall (by gently rocking it back and forth, up and down to loosen it from the wall) and then pull the spear back through the body - and keep it to also cast Light (Cantrip) on it and use it as a basic throwable walking stick (I'm proficient in Simple Weapons so can use this).
Perception for poking around the bodies - 8
If it's the only spear - trying to remove the spear (Strength check?) - 19 // On a Fail I ask Xanth "Hey Big Guy - you couldn't get me that spear, could you?".
PORTIA will notice three doors in the circular room including the one from the small courtyard with crenellated battlements that they came from. The north door has been used recently. It is not trapped. The southern door has been used far less so.
GLYNT will not find any valuables on the corpses of the Goblins. They have been dead for some time. Rats have been gnawing on the flesh. GLYNT will have no problem pulling the spear from the impaled Goblin. The dead Goblin falls to the floor. And the Gnome will notice what appears to be Draconic writing hidden by the Goblin's corpse.
XANTH will notice faint human-sized footprints that lead toward the most northerly door.
RAGDOR will find what may be a secret door. (Location noted on map.)
Portiawill share her findings with the group "It looks like the people we are following took the northern door. The other door hasn't been used as much so if we want to get our reward quicker, we can go straight after them."but her curiosity gets the better of her "though I want to see what was the other way" and she goes to open the southern door
I will ask the others "Before we open any doors, does anyone want me to try and see what this writing says? I can figure it out but it will take a bit of time" (OOC - 10 mins, Ritual Casting of Comprehend Languages).
I start the Light cantrip on my new spear and will use that as a torch as we move forward to help Xanth with seeing in the dark.
I then cast Comprehend Languages as a ritual (10 mins casting) to read the Draconic on the wall (note - I will also understand any languages I hear for an hour afterwards - which is the same duration as my Light spell, though that has a 10 min head start).

I'll bring up the rear and follow lady Portia's lead on the catwalk.

"Jam it shut most thing that live around here probably already know about it and will avoid it anyway. Is the door safe "
Ok, shall we check the door now? Xanth will take a passive look at it.
