Edgar smiles, "then onto the tavern, and since the festivities are tonight there might be some things being set up, like stages or seating areas that we should check, talk to the people in the tavern and see if anyone new is intown for the event."
Sorry for the long delay, guys. RL's been kicking my butt lately and I haven't had as much time to update as I would prefer.
Vayn: You received word shortly before coming to Phandalin that Colin Dumein, a young roustabout street urchin that you met in Waterdeep and helped set back on the straight and narrow, had managed to find work as a stablehand in the village. You'd been meaning for some time to try and track him down and see how he's doing, but training with the Knights has kept you busier than expected up till now. Now with the opportunity to gather some intel before the evening party, you decide it would be a pretty good time to catch up so you make your way to the main village stables. Unfortunately, upon arriving there and inquiring about Colin you are informed that he's been missing for a few days now, along with a couple of horses. The stablemaster if visibly agitated at the reminder, and blusters angrily about the kid running away with the steeds.
Edgar, Phillandros, Gimmur, and Night: Making your casual way into town, you all take note that there's a sense of eager excitement in the air. There are kids running around in the street, playing games while their parents are busily tending to last minutes errands. You pass numerous small shops, one of which has several well-dressed mannequins in it's large bay windows and a line of people out the door. The scent of fresh-baked breads wafts out of the local bakery, even though you know on most days most of their baking is done in the early morning when it's cooler. It seems that they, along with much of the rest of the town, are preparing for the evening's festivities.
Having been informed that the party will be hosted on the town green, which is situated at the northern end of the town proper, you all gradually make your way in that direction. As you go, you note that many of the people you pass by give your group second and even third glances before hurrying to put a little extra distance between you and them. One mother, upon seeing that her four-year-old son was wandering too close in Phillandros's direction, hurriedly scoops him up and carries him off with a scolding word about staying away from dangerous folks.
As you finally come to the town green, a large swath of well-tended trees and grassy field that sits on the northern side of the town square, you can see that it is positively bustling with activity. You can see a number of small stages being set up throughout the area, including a taller, larger one on border between the green and the square. There are even a few tents being set up, as it seems that Lord Tylandar has gone to the extent of even hiring a small carnival troop to provide entertainment for the night. All told, the atmosphere is busy and bustling.
On the eastern side of the square, near a large bronze statue of a rearing warhorse that several children are attempting to climb, you find the Stag-Horned Flagon, which you've all been told (by Dietrich, no less) is the more welcoming of the two taverns in the town.
Gimmur smiles and waves at each kiddo, and makes funny faces and such to ease their worry. When he sees the tents and stages being set up, he leans in. "Better watch those carnival folk," he grumbles. "They might look like fun, but they're tricksy."

In spite of all the stares Flawless carries on with his chin held high, and a pep to his step. And yet, he still casually slow down to walk alongside closer to Phillandros. "Understood. Perhaps we leave them to you then when the times come?"He asks Gimmur. "Just in case. Never know if someone might have snuck into the troupe." Night says with an excited gleam in his eyes. The gleam disappears a second later as he peers past the dwarf, expression shifting to a small scowl. Wordlessly, he jog up to the kids, snatching the first one he can off the statue before trying to shoo the lot off it.
Vayn quietly accompanies the others as they reach the square, noting the tavern he says. "Well, shall we put Dietrich's recommendations to the test and see if this tavern is welcoming?"

When everyone is past the entrance edgar will walk in and start looking around the establishment. Looking for a place for them to sit and also listening as they enter.

Night: As you move closer to the statue and begin raise your arms with the intent of waving them at the kids to get their attention, you catch sight of a number of adults sitting on a collection of benches near the statue. A couple of middle aged women and an older man (all human) are watching with bemused smiles as the children climb about on the statue. You even catch sight of another man, closer to your own age, who is standing on the opposite side of the statue and helping one of the smaller children climb up into the stone saddle. From the laughter and smiles on every face, you suddenly get the impression that this is very much a normal thing here in the town square, and something the locals very much enjoy and encourage for their kids.
(Because of your Nat20, you notice all of this before you actually call any attention to yourself. Do you still wish to continue?)
After some hesitation he will lower his hand, and turn to follow the others. 'Whew~ Okay, that was too close! Let us try harder not to ruin things for Mistress Tarkel -- I mean, Lady Jhessana! Lady Jhessana! Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.'He thought, bonking himself on the head as he entered the tavern.
(If I should still do the perception roll for the tavern:)
With Edgar holding open the door, Gimmur leads the way into the Stag-Horned Flagon with Phillandros right behind him. Vayn waits outside to keep an eye on Night until the young tabaxi rejoins the group, so Edgar goes ahead and follows Gimmur and Phillandros.
Gimmur, Phillandros, and Edgar: The tavern is largely empty, since it's still little while before noon (you guys DID have an early start to the day), but the atmosphere is cheery nonetheless. There's a minstrel in the corner playing a quiet but energetic piece to give the place some ambiance, and a smattering of locals seem to be either taking an early lunch or enjoying a ate breakfast on a lazy morning. A few heads turn in your direction as you enter, but no eyes linger on you for more than a few moments.
After waiting around for just a bit, unsure of where to go, Gimmur takes the initiative to lead you guys to a table in the northwest corner, next to a large window that gives a good view of the square and green outside. The table is a bit snug for Phillandros, but he is able to fit. Once seated, you all wait for one of the two visible serving girls to approach.
Vayn and Night:
Once Night has returned from his aborted mission drive the children away from the statue, the two of you follow your companions into the tavern. Between Night's sharp senses and Vayn's practiced sense for such establishments, you both notice a number of things.
1) While most of the patrons are minding their own business and amiably chatting away the morning with each other, there is one dwarvish looking figure in the southwest corner who keeps glancing across the room at your companions with a dour expression on his face.
2) At a table on the eastern wall, between the large corner hearth and the bar itself, there are a pair of figures that seem to be actively trying to avoid notice. One appears to be a human male in his mid-twenties, but the other figure has a cloak on with its large hood up, so you can't make out any details about them.
3) At the bar, there are two notable women having a conversation. One of them, middle-aged with graying hair and standing behind the bar, you take to be the tavern's owner, Arleosa Starhenge (based on the description that Dietrich gave you). The other woman, who appears slightly older, is dressed in strikingly bright colors, mostly blues and reds, and holds herself in a particularly confident posture, as though she hasn't a care in the world. The two women are smiling and laughing as they talk, though you note that Arleosa does occasionally throw cautious glances at both the hooded figure you noted above and at Phillandros in the corner.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Night shares a look with Vayn and the others. Though seeing that only Vayn really sported even a remotely similar look of recognition, he shakes his head in mild disappointment. "Say Sir Edgar? Sir Gimmur? That dwarvish fellow over there looks pretty troubled. Either of you two feel like doing a dry run, and offering him some aid?"He suggest, gesturing with his head over the said person in the southwest corner.
"I-I'd do it myself, but... I-I prefer sitting at the bar. And I'm pretty sure Sir Vayn has business at the bar. Don't.. you?"He asks, giving the only other human at the table a nervous but sly look. "But of course, while their doing that, you're welcome join us, sir Philandros. You'll probably even get served faster."He leans over, cupping his hand about his mouth, and says in a stage whisper, "Though we should probably sit towards the end there. You know, avoid worrying the other customers." At that, he'll try to subtly point to the human and hooded figure, then scratch near his eyes.
Ooc: edgar is human, Hildigrim is the halfling
Edgar smiles, "then onto the tavern, and since the festivities are tonight there might be some things being set up, like stages or seating areas that we should check, talk to the people in the tavern and see if anyone new is intown for the event."
