Nox is going to wave in Barnabus’ direction to try to get his attention and shout, “Hey Dwarf! You know anything about what's in these waters?” He’s grinning as much as he can to show that he’s not approaching in a hostile manner.
Morkeleb approaches Shalescar and Grynsk and, catching the tail end of their conversation, confidently interjects himself into it and says,
“I agree that we need to go to any length in order to keep the fishermen healthy and happy and working. We need a steady influx of seafood to keep me well fed, ha ha! Maybe they need some perks to keep them motivated? I’m thinking, for example, what if they were allowed fire for warmth in return for a day spent fishing?”
Grynsk laughs, “See, now that’s an enterprising idea!”
Shalescar gives both of you a glassy-eyed smile, taking it in slowly. Eventually, he speaks, “I’d have to take an idea like that up with the priests to make sure we don’t anger the Frostmaiden. It might work though. Why haven’t there been more going out again?”
Grynsk facepalms, having obviously explained this once already. “Like I said, some lass is getting the boys riled up about some monster in the lake. It’s nonsense I tell ya. Just some drunken sailors crashing boats is all. But it’s enough that my numbers are down.”
Then, fully taking you in, he turns to you Morkeleb. “Speaking of, have you considered spending a day out there big fella? You look like you could haul those nets in mighty quick, and we’re paying 3 copper a trout right now. You think that’d be enough to get people out there, but those wives’ tales are getting to them. Surely a big man like you ain’t worried ‘bout that though?”
He grins and gives you a friendly slap on the shoulder.
Morkeleb is a bit surprised by this proposition. But it makes sense. The fishermen had gibbered about some kind of creature out there, and if that were the case, maybe he could do something about it. Or on other hand, if it turned out to be nothing, he would be setting a brave example for the other fishermen. It seems like a win-win. At any rate, it would be taking action, which is just what he needs.
“3 coppers, you say? Alright, I’ll give it a go. Morkeleb is afraid of nothing. I’ll show everyone that it’s safe. And if there does happen to be some… creature out there, well then, we’ll just see who’s at the top of the food chain.”
Nox is going to wave in Barnabus’ direction to try to get his attention and shout, “Hey Dwarf! You know anything about what's in these waters?” He’s grinning as much as he can to show that he’s not approaching in a hostile manner.
Upon his return, Barnabus finds almost everyone has left the docks. With nothing to report anyway, he shrugs, shakes off the frost and sets to return to his patrol when he hears a call. Looking about he sees another dragon born seemingly trying to get his attention. Barnabus strides forth and snaps to a ridged posture causing his armor to clang loudly.
"Sergeant Barnabus Ironheel. What seems to be the issue?"
“That’s a good lad!” he replies, “Be on the docks first thing tomorrow morning, and I’ll have you setup with a boat and some tackle. And please, bring friends if you’ve got them. We always need more out there!”
He motions a toast with his mug, then returns yo conversations with the Speaker, who seems to have forgotten the conversation and returned to his food.
Morkeleb muses on whether the fisherman he was helping this morning would, in turn, help him. He doesn’t actually know a lot about fish, other than that he likes to eat them.
Upon hearing Barnabus’ response, Nox stops waving and will start walking towards the dwarf. “Ah, it seems like I’ve stumbled upon a man of status! I’m Nox and I was just talking to this girl about how there’s some fish or beast in these waters. Apparently the dockmaster is trying to cover it up. Would you know anything about this? Even if you're not a fisherman, have you heard anything about these seas being choppier than usual, boats getting wrecked more often, or people going missing?”
" Hmmm....we've had a few reports. Fishing ice flows is no easy business. Now if you've seen something we should report it. Come with me and we'll take it to my commanding officer." Barnabus turns about curtly and starts walking to where his superiors await.
As he slightly jogs to cover the distance between him and Barnabus, “Now is your commanding officer the Dockmaster? Because he’s the one trying to hide this thing’s existence. I’m sure you're great at whatever you do for a living but I don’t know if your opinion will be enough to sway anything if that is the case.” He pauses for a second as he finally catches up to Barnabus, “Then again we might actually get something done about this situation if your officer is actually receptive to the notion of the townspeople getting swallowed up by a giant fish.”
"No the dock master is not my commanding officer. If he believes you is irrelevant. My orders are to report things like this so that is what we are going to do. Now get whatever evidence you wish to present and follow me." replies Barnabus.
Morkeleb will spend much of the rest of the day at the docks, trying to see what the fishermen are up to, helping them to bring in their hauls, wondering if there’s a monster in the lake, wondering if he won’t simply end up drowning himself tomorrow.
Nox glances at Barnabas and frowns; "I mean my 'evidence' was that girl Talia and her sketches. I've never seen the creature myself, only been in town for a few days see. She said that other fishermen and sailors testify that they have encountered it though." He laughs and says "I was sort of hoping you knew more about it than me to be honest. But you know, somebody isn't going to risk freezing themselves to death or drowning because of some fantasy. That girl knows what's happening around here and maybe we can track her down."
Recalling what Tali said before, Nox would know she is staying at the Buried Treasures Inn. The two of you would arrive to find that not many people are staying here, given how few travelers have been able to cross the lake as of late. The inn is surprisingly well furnished, given the circumstances. A middle-aged woman who looks exhausted is washing the front desk, while a small side area on the ground floor is home to a breakfast space and a currently dark fireplace. Tali is sitting alone at one of these wooden tables (laid out like a rectangle that sits 6), nursing a warm drink. She has shed her furs in favor of what appears to be scholar's garb. She looks up at you, surprised to see Nox so quickly, and with a guardsman no less!
"Oh, that wasn't long. Did I miss something!?"
The woman at the front desk looks up, "These men bothering you Tali?" She then notices Barnabus's uniform. "Ah, never mind. You can be here."
Noticing her surprise, Nox thrusts his hands out and in an almost panicked tone says "Hey hey, this man is here to help out the two of us. He just needs some evidence to present to his commanding officer, who isn't the dockmaster. I myself only know what you've told me so if we want to help people out and get the town to take whatever this thing in its water is seriously, we're gonna need your help."
She nods understandingly, eyes glowing now that somebody is taking her seriously. She turns to Barnabus.
"Well sir, if you'll look at these sketches... I know they're a little abstract, but I've been catching glimpses of it, there's something in the lake that I think is going to shape into a large eel once I've gotten more information. I'm a little iffy on where this one fin fits into the eel theory, but the point stands. You must have heard about the number of lost boats recently, and I believe this is the cause! Why else would some of the fishermen stop doing their job unless there was truth to this?"
The woman at the desk speaks up as well, "I've heard people talking about it. Can't say how true things are, people could just be lost and seeing things given the circumstances, but supposedly ol' Dralic's crew never came back after they went out last week. Some folks are saying they jumped ship for Termalaine."
Tali respond, "That's coming from the dockmaster! I'm sure something happened to the men on that boat and he's covering it up. Won't listen to me about the danger at all!"
The innkeeper sighs, "Wouldn't shock me. Grynsk has been crooked for as long as I remember. Not that he was ever a bad man, but he'd stiff you out of your pay if he had the slightest way to justify it."
In the corner you notice that there is a very tall and large framed goliath of a man sitting quietly in the corner, listening in to the conversation. Stands and walks over. In a voice that does not seem to represent his muscular size he asks, "May I join you? My name is Jormungandr Skalds, Jar for short. Yeah, I've heard a few stories of that beast when I was around the docks. I think I may have even seen it when I was helping out one of friends on his boat." He pauses, realizing he has not received permission to talk yet. Being a child of streets he knows he could get a crack across the face for rudeness.

Most of the fishermen are on the water by this point. The only other people on the lakeshore currently are:
- Barnabus, currently in his search for the castaway
- One bundled up individual who appears to be taking inventory of the boats still tied up at the dock.
Barnabus searches the bank and scans the open water for signs of the missing fisherman. His efforts prove futile (DC=4) , so he returns to the docks.
