----------------------- UTILITY POST -----------------------
Rules:
This game is limited to new players only. There are not enough games open for new players to get in on. All content will be used from the Players Handbook (PHB) to allow access to most of the material available for free.
Read through all of this. I want to make sure this is going to work for you as well as myself and the others in the party. I've had a few people drop out from another game of mine. It sucks. Please be committed. I know exigent circumstances do occur and understand, but I would like to have a group that can remain together for the duration of the adventure.
Selections will be made from backstorys and party survival optimization.
This adventure will follow the printed adventure to begin with, but may stray off the rails.
About me:
I’m Kyle. Only had real experience in 5e games here in PbP games. Newer DM here ready to bring others into the D&D universe. I will be running a Lost Mines of Phandelver game. I can post at least once a day for the most part, but they will be lengthy so there should be plenty to work off of.
If you’re new to this, don’t worry, I am as well. I want to keep the group small and manageable.
In the city of Neverwinter, a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker asked you to bring a wagonload of provisions to the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of days’ travel southeast of the city. Gundren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found “something big,” and that he’d pay you ten gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to Barthen’s Provisions, a trading post in Phandalin. He then set out ahead of you on horseback, along with a warrior escort named Sildar Hallwinter, claiming he needed to arrive early to “take care of business.”
The story will begin on the trail with the players en route to Phandalin.
Game type:
5e game! PbP game posting at least once a day. Casual game folks! We all have lives. I enjoy roleplay and I want this to be a roleplay heavy game, so feel free to roleplay with one another between my posts. I tend to like detailed posters. One-liners tend to hem up the game quite a bit. And please please please use proper English.
This game features adults, using adult language. You have been warned. (Acquisitions Incorporated reference)
Starting at level 1. Characters will be races from the PHB only for the sake of keeping things simple with standard array or point buy, so no min/max stats, with starting equipment. If you want a back story go crazy. I will try to add them into the story somehow if possible. Attach a pic to your PC as well, please. Looking for 4, possibly 5 players.
Again, this is intended to be roleplay heavy in proper English.
Apply by posting your character here. Include the following:
Character name
Class
Race
Background (Impress with that background (roleplay heavy game))
Character description
Give me a line about your experience as well. Just curious about your experience level.
Example: I run toward the gap in the floor and jump. This isn’t going to be good. Just prior to jumping, I cast light on my quarterstaff. As I land, I take a swing at the guard with my quarterstaff. “You killed my father!”
Any skills, attacks and damage rolls (rolls need to be done in the forum with the dice roller) in the third line like so:
Milestone. I am not a fan of running games with XP leveling up. This gives the idea to players that killing everyone and everything will level up your character faster. I do not want to run a game filled with murder hobos killing everything in their wake and not roleplaying any other solutions. I will level your character when appropriate. Killing extra will not get you there any faster.
Initiative and combat:
Once we enter initiative, I will most likely roll for everyone if you haven’t beat me to it. This is to save time so we do not have to wait for someone to post a single roll to begin and proceed. The initiative will be listed in, most likely, its own post for easy access. I don’t want to tie the game up waiting for combat so if you take a while, I will post your action with your best interest in mind.
Loot and treasure:
Coins will be decided evenly to avoid a player vs player fight. The remainder goes to the Gods! You’re part of a team with some common goal, so act the part. Treasure items will be worked out between the party members. That is for you all to roleplay through and decide upon. No fighting like children. Looting will only find you coins and worthy items. I don’t want to have to deal with someone carrying 17 goblin swords to sell later for a grand total of 2 gp. I’ll give you guys coin and items so don’t worry about that.
Help action:
If you plan on "helping" another player to gain advantage, I won't grant it if you simply say "I help." I need to know how you are going to help this other person in this action. "I will help pull the door closed." "I will help push this item out of the way." Those would be fine to use the help action. Some actions I cannot bring myself to grant advantage for helping, such as lockpicking. How is a second person going to "help" you pick a lock?
Holding items:
I do pay attention to this. Two-handed weapons require two hands, so no shield. Want to hold two weapons? They both must be light. (Obviously, feats overrule this.)
Shields costs 1 action in combat to don or doff a shield (PHP 146). If you are a shield fighter, equip or unequip your shield on your sheet so I get an accurate representation of your AC.
Changing weapons? Rules as written (RAW) states you can stow your weapon as your one free action at the end of your turn, then draw a different weapon as your one free action at the start of your next turn.
Rule disagreements:
I don’t mind a discussion about rules (I’m still learning), but at the end of the day, I’m the DM (not trying to sound like a dick). The discussion will take place in the chat thread.
My only pet peeve:
Do not run my game and do not run another player’s character. We are here to have fun. This is not a war game where combat optimization is key, this is a roleplaying game. Taking over a game ruins the experience for everyone else involved. Don’t be that player please or a rogue tarrasque will take care of your character for me.
Our player characters:
Kimberly Stormwell (holyblades777) - human sorcerer
Renvalm Hellhelm (happy_potato) - human barbarian
Gramgran (thatoneguyyouknow) - wood elf cleric

NPC list:
Gundren Rockseeker - patron of your trip to Phandalin
In the city of Neverwinter, a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker asked you to bring a wagonload of provisions to the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of days’ travel southeast of the city. Gundren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found “something big,” and that he’d pay you ten gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to Barthen’s Provisions, a trading post in Phandalin. He then set out ahead of you on horse, along with a warrior escort named Sildar Hallwinter, claiming he needed to arrive early to “take care of business.”
You’ve spent the last few days following the High Road south from Neverwinter, and you’ve just recently veered east along the Triboar Trail. You’ve encountered no trouble so far, but this territory can be dangerous. Bandits and outlaws have been known to lurk along the trail.
You are all escorting a wagon of supplies pulled by two horses. The wagon is a flat bed cart with foot tall walls. A cargo net hold the supplies down. There is a seat up front for two to sit. Enough room in the back for two to sit among the supplies. Who’s driving the wagon? Where is everyone else going to be? I prefer this game to have a decent amount of role play so talk amongst yourselves. How you know Gundren. Your plans with the money. Other reasons for being here and future plans. Don’t worry about being to suspicious of the others. There’s no secret doutlet agents here.
(I’ll try to block text like this when it’s not actions in the game, more like ques and info. No guarantees though.)
Darthos was sitting on the back of the back of the wagon, his spellbook open on his lap as he studied the contents within, his long white hair shifting slightly in the breeze. Boren, his familiar, which was currently in the guise of a hawk was gliding just above, a shrill cry escaping it now and again. The trek so far, to him at least, had been long and rather boring; they'd done little else besides travel and although the gold that was promised was enticing especially for his magical needs, he was expecting a bit of a fight here or there. Krenar, his master, had told him many things and among them were the dangers that often lurked on the borders of cities, and he was somewhat foolishly hoping to come across one of those.
With a sigh, he closed his book, a thick wood-and-leather bound tome etched in gold and silver, and stretched his hands up and bending back a little, hearing a few pops from his back. He relaxed with a groan and looked over to one of his traveling companions. "Looks like this trip has been rather uneventful," he said with a grin, his fingers tapping on the wooden boards of the wagon, "So why have you lot decided to come along on this venture? The gold? Prestige?" He asked it in a lighthearted way and chuckled to himself, his deep throaty voice carrying alone with some mirth.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Yuri Naïlo
Yuri strode along the road beside the cart. He held his loaded crossbow in his hands carefully, eyes scanning the road ahead, the trees and bushes to either side and occasionally up to his new companions. The tiefling was sat in the back, thumbing through a large book that reminded Yuri of his father's books. "Who amongst us does not need the money friend?" Yuri spoke in response, "but remember, the road is long, and just because we have not been troubled so far, does not mean we will pass through unscathed." Grimacing at his dark words, Yuri dropped his head for a moment before brightening and smiling at the tiefling. "Although if the path continues to be quiet, I shall certainly not complain."
Skill check: Perception 20
OOC I guess I'm happy if the DM prefers passive perception here too. Just let me know the preference.
Gramgran was sitting up front, watching everyone seem to be in high spirits so far. She was quite happy that there had been no trouble yet, and her wrinkled face was lit up with a bright smile. "Oh, I just came because that young dearie Gundren said a cleric would be helpful, and who am I to deny such a sweet young man some help? After all, I got to meet all of you fine children!" She continues to contentedly smile at everyone as she clasped her amulet and said a small prayer to Lliira to thank her for the joy of this journey so far.
Kim is driving the wagon, as she always did in the military. This is due to both the fact that she is fantastic at driving during an attack and the ability to aim a spell while moving. She of course only told Gundren of this, which is why he let her be the driver. She does not wish to let the others know exactly who she is just yet. Everyone either loves or hates the military, and being a Lieutenant would make sure that others treat her different. She enjoys getting to know people without them judging her. Plus this helps her during her spy missions too.
Kim boast a fake smile and says, " Don't worry, Darthos, if we pull off a smooth trip, the next one you go on will surely allow for some excitement. I fully agree with Yuri. It will be nice if we are lucky enough to go without trouble, but it is best to be prepared in case something happens. Also, to answer your question, Mr. Rockseeker as me to do this as a favor. We have a friend in common that knew I was great a controlling a wagon."
Darthos grunted, "Gold would be pretty useful," he said with a nod, his smile turning into a grin as everyone chimed in, "If things do get hairy it's good thing we got Gramgran here to help us out. But, I'm curious about something. Kim, I'm guessing you knew Gundren somewhat passably because of that mutual friend, so do you have any idea what this 'something big' he was talking about might be?" He turned somewhat to get a look at her as he asked.

Gundren kept his secrets to himself and a few select others. Kim doesn’t know and she can play it out anyway she’d like.
So far everyone that has posted has gained a point of inspiration. Use it wisely.
Inspiration: If you have inspiration, you can expend it when you make an attack roll, saving throw, or ability check. Spending your inspiration gives you advantage on that roll. Additionally, if you have inspiration, you can reward another player for good roleplaying, clever thinking, or simply doing something exciting in the game.
Renvalm, walking beside the cart, was feeling a little nervous about the whole situation. He wasn't sure he could trust his new traveling companions and wasn't sure that his whereabouts wouldn't get back to the wrong ears. He would rather go unnoticed and only took the job in the hopes of getting some coin for traveling expenses so he could leave the area quietly and keep up the search for information on the ones who had experimented on him. He hoped that thy could help him with the symptoms and the possibility of revenge wouldn't hurt.
With a quick glance around and sounding like he would rather be anywhere else Renvalm says, "Whatever happens let's get thru it quickly and get this job done fast." "I need this coin and rather not be on the road for long."
“Spirit. In every language in all the Realms, surface and Underdark, in every time and every place, the word has a ring of strength and determination. It is the hero's strength, the mother's resilience and the poor man's armor. It cannot be broken and it cannot be taken away.”
Yuri did not know what to make of his companions sat at the front, and the heavily scarred human walking beside the cart unnerved him. Scars tend to tell a story; the pale human's scars shouted about a life of violence. The fact the human was still standing, marked him as a survivor and his silence as a loner. Yuri marked however, that anyone capable of obtaining those scars, and still be standing, would be a worthy ally in a fight.
Yuri increased his stride, placing himself alongside the mid-point of the cart's length to better hear the conversations of his companions. The girl drove the cart with a steady hand, obviously she had some skill. But the elderly elf was a conundrum. Yuri knew his own father had lived several human lifetimes, but barely looked older than Yuri himself, while his mother showed the early signs of age. This elf had wrinkles!
Kim looks back at Darthos an explains, "No, I know nothing about it. I only met him for about 5 minutes. My friend might not even know. They were friends some time ago from my understanding, possibly even childhood. They had not spoken in years and was asked for help. He... asked me to do the favor in his place, mostly because of my driving skills and because he already had a prior arrangement. I'm sorry I cannot be more help."
I should have asked more about this mission from Captain Izen before departing. This could go south though if he sent me along rather than one of the squadies. OH well, I am up for a little challenge. I wonder if I should give them some warning? Probably not. I don't want them asking me personal questions, plus with Yuri scanning frequently and from what I have noticed effectively, we shouldn't get a drop on us, plus Gramgran should be able to fix the minor wounds anyone gets.
OOC - Thanks Kyle for giving that insight to what Kim knew. I wanted to play aloof to the idea anyway, but it is good to know that she for sure doesn't know any more than the others.

Gundren left you all in the dark about his intentions. He mainly hired you for the escort. Only provided the little info of what he found in passing while speaking about the escort job
If there is something that you’d like to keep secret from the other for story purpose, feel free to pm me directly. Also I may be pm’ing you as well for character info and knowledge not known to the others.
Gramgran looks at Renvalm, who seems to be nervous and fidgety. "Are you all right dearie? You seem a little tense, would you like to ride in the cart a little bit to relax?" Gramgran goes to get off the cart, surprisingly nimble for such an old looking elf. As she gets down, you all see that she is a tiny woman, under 5ft. tall.
OOC - Thanks Kyle for giving that insight to what Kim knew. I wanted to play aloof to the idea anyway, but it is good to know that she for sure doesn't know any more than the others.

Completely acceptable and encouraged for other players as well. Helps me get a feel for the characters. Others players just have to be carful not to play off the thoughts and meta game.
With a brief look of suspicion before he composes himself before addressing Gramgran, " No thank you, I rather walk, plus It looks like I might not fit up there." I need to keep a eye on her. The fairest often have the most to hide and shouldn't be trusted so quickly.

XP or milestone?
Milestone. I am not a fan of running games with XP leveling up. This gives the idea to players that killing everyone and everything will level up your character faster.

Gramgran
Gramgran looks at Renvalm, who seems to be nervous and fidgety. "Are you all right dearie? You seem a little tense, would you like to ride in the cart a little bit to relax?" Gramgran goes to get off the cart, surprisingly nimble for such an old looking elf. As she gets down, you all see that she is a tiny woman, under 5ft. tall.
OOC - I am going to use a lot of thinking for Kim to explain things to the other players, but not spoken so the characters don't know for a while.

Renvalm Hellhelm
With a brief look of suspicion before he composes himself before addressing Gramgran, " No thank you, I rather walk, plus It looks like I might not fit up there." I need to keep a eye on her. The fairest often have the most to hide and shouldn't be trusted so quickly.
“Spirit. In every language in all the Realms, surface and Underdark, in every time and every place, the word has a ring of strength and determination. It is the hero's strength, the mother's resilience and the poor man's armor. It cannot be broken and it cannot be taken away.”
