As the conversation continues among the parties on board, the wagon turns around a blind corner. Ahead of you stands an elf in the roadway. You are half surprised. Half startled.
Everyone recalls from this morning the following:
You all met at Gundren’s shop this morning for the first time. When you all left this morning, Grundren’s assistant, Rolmak, provide some info. Rolmak told you Gundren had commissioned 6 guards for the wagon and only 5 had shown. Rolmak did advise the 6th was some sort of “magic elf,” but that’s all he really knew.
Darthos blinks as he recalls something about another member that hadn't yet shown up and looks over at Yuri and says to him as well as the rest of the group, "Looks like we've found our missing member," Boren flaps forward and perches itself next to Gramgran, its head turning to the side as it eyes the new member with a golden eye.
Greetings fellow travelers! My apologies for my abrupt appearance. I am Morpetor Aloro, Wizard of the Northern Wood Elves, at your service. Morpetor bows his head slightly and heads to the rear of the cart where he immediately engages in conversation with the Tiefling wizard.
I could not help but notice your book. The quest for knowledge is important to me as well. It is during the peaceful portion of our journey that we must prepare ourselves and how we will complement this crew of adventurers.
Renvalm hand moves to one of his hand axes, in case the stranger would become a problem or was one of the people after him. He didn't think he was one of them but he couldn't take the chance of being caught off guard.
"Let's be careful before we fully accept this new member into are group. Stranger, can you prove who you are and that we work for the same client? It seems suspicious that you happen to get ahead of us." "How did you happen to get here before us?"
“Spirit. In every language in all the Realms, surface and Underdark, in every time and every place, the word has a ring of strength and determination. It is the hero's strength, the mother's resilience and the poor man's armor. It cannot be broken and it cannot be taken away.”
No, kind sir. I am merely a student and practitioner of the arcane. (noticing the Tiefling's apprehension) In my years, I have learned to seek out fellow magic folk in my party to prepare for the unexpected. I mean no harm. I come as friend.
Yuri nods to the new arrival, lifts the bolt from his crossbow and pushes himself off the back of the cart. “I think I might be in your seat, friend.” He grins, placing the bolt back into his quiver and slinging the crossbow across his back, and nods to Darthos. He claps his hands together, rubbing his palms together, “Now then, is that ice still on offer?” And sets off at a light jog towards the front of the cart.
At the mention that the elf was a wizard, he sat up even straighter. He'd only ever seen one other wizard ever since he left his master and seeing another one meant potentially new spells, but then that made him hesitate. If he asked to see his spells, he'd have to show his and because he wrote his formulae and diagrams in a unique mix between Infernal and Undercommon that was only legible to him and he wasn't all that comfortable sharing his secrets with someone else. But he smiled nonetheless, "Preparing for the unexpected is always wise," he said with a nod, "But you have to understand, friend, I'm not exactly all that comfortable sharing my secrets with a complete stranger. I don't mean to offend, it's just. Well, I just don't know you enough to go about revealing my most prized possession, so to speak. I hope you understand."
Even though Kimberly has started to warm up to this group of misfits, the surprise and quick acceptance of this new member annoyed her. It allowed her to focus up back to the task at hand. She is now dawning a stern look on her face, no longer able to hide her frustration. She is glad that from the point of view of everyone, only Gramgran might notice.
I should have been more prepared. Had this new comer been a threat, I am not sure I could have taken them down without casualties. I need to stay focused. Captain Izen won't be happy if I fail a simple transport mission, plus I can't have that on my record if I want to advance to Captain myself one day.
Seeing Kim tense up, Gramgran puts a hand on her arm and quietly says, "You know, you were right. You are a great driver, and I need that with these old bones. So thank you Kim."
I am not in need of your spells, young one. If it will make you feel more comfortable, we can play it by ear. He grins at the young wizard and hops on to the cart in a strangely youthful way. Sitting to one side so that he can scan for any potential dangers. Thank you for the seat.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Darthos Tay
Darthos watches as Yuri pushes himself off the cart and returns his nod. "By ear yousay?" he asked, raising a curious eyebrow, "right, I'm gonna take you up on that offer but first lemme send my familiar, Boren, up ahead to scout and see if there's anything there. Don't want anymore surprises, eh," he said as he scooped up his tome and pressed it to his chest, hugging it. He then turned to Boren mentally commanding it to take flight and scout out ahead and then to return. Then, breathing out and entered a sort of trance-like state as his eyes turned opaque-white, his vision shifting over to see from Boren's eyes as he took to the air, the wagon becoming smaller by the second and a somewhat disorienting feeling came over him as he saw himself sitting on one of its benches. Then, Boren glided forward, the wagon passing from view.
Lessening his pace on moving in line with Kimberley and Gramgran, Yuri rests his hand on the hilt of his mother's old sword. He looks up at the two women riding on the cart. "Excuse me, Grandmother, Miss?" He coughs, clearing his throat, "I can break that, err, ice... If you are ok with me using my hands." He raises a hand up towards Kimberley "Have either of you travelled this way before, is our destination much further?"
She looks at Yuri thoughtfully, trying to remember, then tells him, "Well the last time I was around here was probably two centuries ago? I don't remember if Phandalin was here or not. Oh, but I do remember that strapping young man I was with. His name was Jonathan Mcduggs. So handsome, and kind." Gramgran gets lost in her memories for a bit, faintly smiling.

Ahead of you the trail continues. The woods grow thicker and thicker the further you proceed. The woods pinch in close to the road, causing a bottle neck. You don’t see anyways around. It’s the only way. You spot 2 down beasts along the path. You’re about 300 yards out from the beasts.
Responding to his fellow elf, Morpetor responds, My apologies Ma’am for not answering you right away. It is my practice to get to know my fellow wizards first when entering a group like this. However, it appears that my abrupt appearance has but everyone on edge. I don’t believe we have met. It will be a pleasure to serve beside you.
Gramgran blinks a bit, focusing back on the present, and says to Morpetor, "Oh dear, that is sweet of you to say. I hope that we get to know each other better. I don't know if you've been introduced yet, but this is Kim right here, and from what I've seen, she's a dependable one. This big fella over here is Renvalm. He's a little quiet, but he's such a gentleman; he even helped me up onto this seat not too long ago! Yuri is right over there, the one with the longsword. He's a very polite young man. I can tell his parents raised him well. And you've already met Darthos. A very studious one, and so ambitious too!" Gramgran points or nods to each person as she introduces them, smiling especially at Renvalm, as he's been quiet ever since Morpetor showed up.
At the moment Renvalm was lost in thought, still concerned that everyone was a little to trusting and accepting of this 'supposed' 6th member with no proof of there identity or that they worked for Gundren Rockseeker. Renvalm decided to keep an eye on him for a while in case Morpetor wasn't who he says. There were just too many unanswered questions.
