(OOC: @ZelocktheDragon - Simon got a 32 Stealth and 28 Investigation, and you chose the sewer?! Erik desperately hopes that Simon stumbled across a hidden service entrance, a forgotten secret door, or even just a gap in the palace security while he was looking for a way into the sewer.)
(Alright, to move this along, I'll just do a little bit of railroading. Sorry I disappeared for... um... a long time...)
As you're debating what to do, Chandrelle gets a communication from HQ. Her lips purse as she reads the message.
"Command just got word that there are several VIPs on the guest list... people who we don't want to risk getting close to the Countess, but who also should not be privy to the military intelligence about her presence. So... they're telling us to get in there and take her out as quickly as we can..."
The half-elf shows everyone who's not currently in the middle of an active investigation the message she received.

Here are your options: 1) Entering the dungeons for a dungeon crawl 2) Infiltrating the actual event
Where are we picking up the story? Simon was sneaking around and searching for a way into the Gray Palace. Did he find a way into the dungeons underneath? Has he returned to the rest of the party with that finding? Or are we picking it up at the point where the whole party has already joined Simon at the hidden entrance / secret tunnel / sewer that leads to the tunnels underneath the Gray Palace?
Let's pick up when Simon has found a tunnel that looks like it leada into the castle. It's sealed from the inside, as kind of makes sense for a route into a castle, but you can probably find a way in, either through brute force or more technological (Artificer magic) means...

In preparation for their raid on the Countess's presumed hideout, Erik spent the morning after his last long rest preparing equipment. He "cannibalized" parts from his enhancements to his armor and shield to ensure that the whole group is well-equipped to face the next lieutenant of the Dark Lord.
Erik applies some alchemical concoction ("flame retardant") to Simon's armor to give him resistance to fire damage.
Erik does some work to improve the balance of Toa's maul and affixes some jewels to it ("they help focus the naturally occurring loops of arcane energy whenever they experience changes in angular momentum") to Toa's maul, making it a +2 weapon. (Seeing Toa's expression, Erik simplifies his explanation: "When you swing, it'll hit harder.")
Erik shows everyone how to use his special spell-storing item. He has a kit with his alchemist's tools, including a shiny metal cylinder with a bright green jewel at one end and a set of small vials with a pungent-smelling liquid. He pantomimes without actually triggering the item: "Pop one of the vials into this contraption, aim this nozzle at an injury, and press down on this here on the green 'button'. It'll spray a combination anti-histamine, anti-inflammatory, and coagulant that will accelerate healing." Erik gives the kit to Chandrelle to carry / use for now. (Spell Storing item: Cure Wounds with Erik's +5 SCM.)
The half-elf shows everyone who's not currently in the middle of an active investigation the message she received.
Erik reads the message and thanks Chandrelle and says to the others: "I guess there's no time to do additional reconnaissance. It's now or never." If they're not already with Erik at the door, he responds telepathically to Simon that Command insists that they move immediately to take out The Countess. He and the others can follow Erik's mental instructions to join him at the door, maybe going one at a time to attract less attention.
(OOC: I'm not sure whether the tunnel is hidden or in plain view, but let's assume that the party doesn't do anything that would attract attention from casual passers-by or from the palace's guards.)
Once they're at the door and ready to go through, Erik gives the group a brief pep talk.
(OOC: Erik uses Inspiring Leader: the 4 party members and Chandrelle each gain 12 THP.)
The heavy door creaks open, revealing a long, winding stairway into darkness...
You can feel a hum of otherworldly power even from here. It feels hostile, angry, and cruel, yet strangely alluring. Almost like the darkness is daring you to enter.

(OOC: @Mister_Whisker - do you mean that it's Darkness once we get past the light from the open door? Or just Dim Light? I suppose the other characters have Darkvision, but Erik does not. He'll either need to light his lantern, use his magical tinkering feature to provide a little bit of light (about as strong as a candle), or burn a spell slot and his last prepared spell for 8 hours of Darkvision.)
If we want to use Stealth, Erik should not be the lead: Erik currently has his armor configured for Guardian mode and makes quite a lot of noise as he walks around.
If we don't want to send Simon or Eppie to scout ahead into dangerous territory, then we were previously using this marching order:
Echo Toa
Erik
Eppie
Simon
Toa
Though that puts Erik just 10 ft behind the Echo. If we want to have some advance scouting, we could move Toa up so that it's more like this:

It's dim light.
Also, where are you planning to put Chandrelle in your marching order?

Good question. I just grabbed the group's old marching order minus PCs who left.
I generally like to put hirelings toward the back of the group but not at the very back in case something attacks from behind. How wide is the tunnel? 5' or 10'? If it's wide enough, we could go 2 x 1 x 2 with Chandrelle in the middle and Toa's Echo scouting ahead 30'.
"Always with the darkness," Toa grumbles, somewhat unreasonably since after all his companions have chosen the path he favors. "Tangaroa favors the sun shining on turquoise shores, yet under His gaze, our ancestors shall protect us yet."
Murmuring to himself, he summons his echo, which moves 20' ahead of the island warrior as he takes the lead. Taking a moment to allow his eyes to adjust and look for any enemies, traps or hazards, Toa gradually begins to descend, attempting Stealth, though not quite achieving it as the ritual ornaments upon his broad chest clatter slightly as his lightly shod feet touch the surface of the steps. His echo moves ahead apace.
Toa'sPerception: 20 (dirty) - Toa has darkvision so the dim light is like bright light to him, thus no disadvantage. Toa'sStealth: 12
Simon would like to not be the very last person because he might get attacked. I also think scouting for Simon makes the most sense, actually, so he will move ahead. silently.
Stealth: 14

Alright, Simon basically disappeared.
What are you searching for specifically? Because whatever it is, you found it.

I am looking for a way for our group to get into the sewer.

Toa does not know what a VIP is. Voracious Insect Predator? Vivid Indigo Parrot? Regardless, he senses the urgency in Chandrelle's voice.
Itching to do... something... anything... the island warrior shoulders his maul and looks ready to go at a moment's notice. Then he hesitates.
"Ah... is Simon back yet?"
