The sun sits low in the sky, casting a warm glow over Greenest as evening beings to settle in over the town. At the Eagle's Roost - the town's most popular tavern - the air is filled with laughter and merriment. Patrons crowd around tables or in booths, clinking mugs of ale, sharing stories of the day's work, and indulging in hearty meals. The aroma of roasting meat mingles with that freshly baked bread, and in the background a the sweet notes of bard's lute help to create a comforting atmosphere.
In one corner, a group of local farmers chuckle over a game of dice while at the bar, a traveling merchant animatedly recounts tales of distant lands to a fascinated audience. The innkeeper, a bear of a man with a perpetual smile, weaves through the crowd with practiced ease, delving drinks and exchanging friendly banters. It's a scene of pure contentment, where the worries of the world seem non-existent.
The tavern is full enough tonight that by chance, the four of you end up having to share a table. Maybe this is your first evening in Greenest, or perhaps you've been here for days already. In any case, take this opportunity to introduce your characters to each other!
At the table is a goliath. Even sitting down his well-muscled appearance is imposing as he chats between bites, "So Barnabas, what have you been up to lately? Before Ontharr asked to come here, I was helping clear out some goblin raiders on the Triboar trail." He chuckles. "Sneaky little things, popping in and out of view, but they go down easily enough once you hit them." Turning to the others he introduces himself with an extended hand. "The name is Darath Dathnaki. How about y'all?"
A pale human with platinum hair and blue eyes sits across from the goliath, enjoying a nice mug of ale. He's dressed in fine clothes befitting nobility from a larger city, though he seems at ease in the more rustic environment the tavern gives off. He takes the extended hand and shakes it with a smile. "Jaime Calanthal." After pausing for a moment. "So did you get them all? Your goblin raiders?"
A short and wiry young human woman wearing a patched-up jacket leans back in her chair, balancing it on two legs as her eyes dart from one group to the next. 'I've got to focus on finding these Dragon Cult people,' she thinks, but then she hears a snippet of the traveling merchant's tale and she's once more caught up in the tavern's lively scene.
She reaches for a piece of bread and her drink, a mug of ale, then returns to leaning her chair, tapping a table leg with her muddy boots for balance. When she hears Darath's introduction, she for the first time takes a real look at her tablemates: first Darath, then Jaime, and last, the one across from her, who must be Barnabas. She stuffs the piece of bread in her mouth, replying between chews, "I'm Sassamona. You guys don't look like farmers. What're you doin' in Greenrest, besides hunting goblins? I'm not a farmer, by the way."
Barnabas, a human of average height and build with long wavy black hair and dark blue eyes, sits next to Darath, seemingly distracted watching the dice game going on in the corner before he realizes it's his turn to speak. "Oh, nothing much. Just spreading the word of the Lady of Luck." He smirks proudly, fidgeting with the coin-shaped Tymora amulet about his neck while taking a swallow of ale with his other hand. He looks a bit more well-dressed than the average priest, perhaps owing to the goddess' favor in his gambling endeavors. "I'm Barnabas, as you already heard," he introduces with a shrug, "Darath and I came here in search of a blue dragon, but haven't seen hide nor scale of the thing so far."
"You're hunting a dragon?"Jaime's eyebrows go up, surprised that they expected to find such a creature here, and that they wanted to run into one at all. "That seems like a dangerous quarry to be tracking."
"I'm here to find an old friend. Said he needed help with something, but I haven't seen heads or tails of him since getting here."
A crack of thunder rings out in the sky, at first barely noticeable above the dull roar of the tavern. And then it rumbles a second time, and you swear you can hear screaming in the distance. A third thunderclap shakes the walls of the taverns, and finally the rest of the patrons seem to notice. The merriment and joy is gone, replaced now by quiet and worried murmurs.
You can hear more screaming from outside. But before any of you can get up to investigate, the doors to the tavern burst open. A four-legged scaled beast walks in, clawed feet scraping against the wood floor of the tavern. From behind the muscular dragon-like beast come three kobolds.
One of the kobolds steps forward, tossing a large empty rucksack on the floor of the tavern. It points at the sack and barks out in broken Common. "Money. Gold. Treasure." It draws a wicked dagger, waving it in the air. "Or death." The drake creature next to it roars, punctuating the threat.
Darath smiles at Jaime and says, "Unfortunately I was called away before we finished the job. So the rest of the boys are having fun bonking goblins heads without me. Though I don't doubt their abilities." As the kobolds and drake burst in he adds, "Though it seems we'll have some action here."
Eyeing Barnabas he says, "First one to the kill has the other buy a drink?"
He stands up from his seat, grabbing hold of his trident and says to the kobold with a grin. "Death."
Barnabas' expression shifts from one of utter disinterest at the intruding kobolds and dragon-thing to complete interest in a matter of seconds. "Now there's an idea! Let us see who the goddess favors then." He hurriedly gulps down the last of his ale before standing, brushing himself off before casually pulling out his mace and shield.
The drake's head whips around at your challenge, charging across the floor of the tavern through the crowd. It extends its neck forward, chomping down onto Jaime with its maw.
Bite Attack (Jaime) -> 18 to hit, 4 damage.
Meanwhile the kobold who spoke first scampers forward underneath the table adjacent to you, drawing a dagger and trying to stab Sassamona in the leg.
Sassamona scoots back just in time to dodge the kobold's stab. She returns it with a blow of her own, swinging her quarterstaff wildly and following up with a roundhouse kick towards the kobold's head.
OOC: Action: Attack --> 9 to hit for 7 bludgeoning damage Bonus Action: Martial Arts --> 13 to hit for 5 bludgeoning damage
Barnabas targets the kobold Sassamona has already damaged, hoping to swoop in for a quick kill. He points creepily at the kobold, casting Toll the Dead on it.
The kobold squawks as the monk's quarterstaff swings wildly over its head, it swivels to watch the blunt weapon. In that moment, Sassamona's foot slams into the side of its head, killing it. Its broken body slides across the floor.
While Jaime's spear digs into the drake-creature's shoulder, its ears begin to bleed as Barnabas' magic affects it, bringing it even closer to death. Moments later a trident skirts off scales, just barely missing.
OoC: Barnabas, your original target was dead. If you'd like to instead target one of the other kobold's that's fine. I just assumed you wanted an already hurt target so I picked the drake.
Jaime ignores the pain in his arm where the beast had latched on, striking forward once more with the spear. The weapon spins in his hands as he brings the blunt end of the weapon down like a club upon the drake's head.
