Chaselooks worriedly at Illuwen. "Don't worry! We will be extra careful. And we will take care of you, whatever happens," she says, then mutters to herself, "...Honestly, this could be complete rubbish."But as soon as she says this, she looks at the fortune teller with the most angelic expression, just in case.
She is not surprised by her reading. "Of course", she thinks, "something will tamper with my magic. And, oh! It will be my own blood. Yay." But she looks at the fortune teller gratefully anyway.
Lex's reading seems to be the nicest of the three, and that was okay. Enough veiled threats so far. Finally, when the fortune teller addresses Scratch, she remarks, "Yeah, brother. Why don't you give it a go? It is free, and you might as well learn something interesting. Who knows!"
Before they leave the tent, Chase tries her luck regarding the kenku and asks, "Madam, have you happened to see a kenku around? We are looking for one who has done something awful to a friend of ours."
Scratch holds his paws up and grins. "No, thank you. My future is held in the palm of another. Knowing what might come will not help me live my life any better."
"Suit yourself, my dear. There is one more thing." she says as she looks in Illuwen's direction. "At first I thought it was nothing, just nonsense images the fates put in my head." She looks around at Chase and Lex as she continues, "But then I kept seeing it in the other fortunes. There is an item you will need on this journey of yours. Without it you will surely fail. Its legends once filled countless scrolls. Now severed, you must search amongst the coals."
"Search among the coals…?"Chaseglances at the others, brow furrowed. Do they have the faintest idea what this woman is talking about? Because she certainly doesn't. She turns back to the woman, expression blank. "O…kay? We’ll keep an eye out for coals, I guess."
Before they leave the tent, Chase tries her luck regarding the kenku and asks, "Madam, have you happened to see a kenku around? We are looking for one who has done something awful to a friend of ours."
Scratch scowls, replaying the rhyme in his mind after the woman says it. There are several words that catch his attention, but he waits to discuss it, hoping she may answer Chase's question.
"Oh, okay. Thank you anyway", Chase replies. Ugh, finding that bird person was going to be hard. On their way outside, she pulls out the map, and points at a place in the southern part of the Carnival with ther orange-furred finger. "Well, If we need to find something amongst the coals, I would certainly start here". She is pointing to the Mystery Mine. "We could take a look at the Snail Racing on our way there in case there's some mood to improve there."
She stops for a moment, and then starts laughing. "I mean, snails? That must be the slowest race in the world!"
Illuwenrubs his chin thoughtfully. "I don't think I've ever been to the Mystery Mine. I guess if we're looking for coals, that would be the place to start."
She stops for a moment, and then starts laughing. "I mean, snails? That must be the slowest race in the world!"
"Yeah, it's kind of ridiculous, but it's fun. We could definitely stop off there first. And if we don't find what we're looking for at the mines, we could try the Bubble-Pop Teapot. You can get a pretty good view of the whole carnival from those bubbles."
"Ridiculous sounds absolutely delightful!" Chase replies, her eyes lighting up. At the bard's depiction of the Bubble-Pop Teapot, she nearly lets out a purr. "Bubbles? Now that sounds like my kind of fun!"
The thought of spotting a kenku from up high crosses her mind, and with that, she asks Illuwen, "Hey, Illuwen, did you get to spend time with Juniper while you were living here? How is she? She must be enormous by now! And what about Dirla? And Star? Star must surely be as big as her mother!"

Illuwenshakes his head at the mention of the owlbear. "No, the clowns took her back to her owner pretty much as soon as I got here. They left before I got a chance to meet them. I heard they went to the feywild, if we ever find this crossing maybe we'll run into her there!"
"Star's not full grown yet, but she is much bigger then when you last saw her. Maybe we can go by Dirla's and..." Illuwentrails off for a moment, lost in thought. "No, actually, she's not there. She went missing too, a couple weeks back."
Lex smiles politely and thanks the woman after she provides his fortune, but he ponders it a bit as he walks away with the others. Certainly he had met other prognosticators. Magic was a strange thing, and he would need to keep an eye out for what she had said.
His smile becomes more genuine at the thought of the snails, and agrees they should stop by, though he has his mind mostly on finding the crossing. When Illuwen mentions the missing creature, his smile dissolves into a puzzled frown. “Wait, Dirla is missing, or Star? In either case… how terrible!”
Chasegives Illuwenand Lexa concerned look. "Dirla and Star are missing? Well, that’s definitely something to ask Mister Witch and Mister Light about—if we can find them! I liked Dirla and Star so much. I really hope they’re safe. Same as Juniper."
When Scratch shares his thoughts, she looks at him wide-eyed. "A sev—? ... Grandma’s whiskers! No, I hadn’t thought about it! I hope you’re wrong about that, brother. What use could a severed head possibly have?!"
"'Its legends once filled countless scrolls.' A severed hand, of a writer maybe?" Illuwen shudders at the thought. "The phrasing did seem very particular. Maybe it's some sort of riddle, maybe we're not looking for literal coals at all."
“Wait, Dirla is missing, or Star? In either case… how terrible!”
"Just Star. People do just up and vanish from time to time around here. I don't know, I guess the carnival life isn't for everyone, but you'd think if she wanted to leave she would've said something."
As the conversation continues you all make your way to the Snail Racing area. The grandstands next to this racecourse are filled with cheering fairgoers ringing bells, swinging rattles, and waving flags. On the starting line, eight GIANT snails are having their shells scrubbed by pixies.
Above the circular course, a wooden gantry hangs from the branches of a central tree, where two goblins officiate the proceedings.
While the snails are being prepped for the next race you see some fairgoers getting their tickets punched and lining up to mount a snail to begin racing.
"Wooooooooow, they are ENORMOUS!!"Chaseexclaims excitedly, looking at the snails. "Let's go have our tickets punched!" she suggests, happily trotting off to the ticket line.
Lex was a bit pensive as he thought of the missing butterfly-cat creature on the way, but he smiled almost in spite of himself when he saw the large creatures racing through the course. He studied them for a moment to ensure they seemed cared for and not mistreated, but nodded satisfactorily at the sight of the pixies helping them. He joined the others in getting his ticket punched to ride the creatures. “Of course, I wouldn’t miss this for anything.”
Scratch can't help but smile in wonder at the sight. "What kind of snails are these, Lex?" the tabaxi asks. "Anything in that big book of yours?" He walks over, his eyes large and full of joy. "We can ride these if we want?"

Illuwen gives Chase a wry smile as he joins her in line. "Yeah, I thought you'd enjoy this one. Scratch, Lex, you coming?"
As they wait he takes stock of the other guests in the queue near them. Who are they? What are they talking about?
