As Chase looks out from under the boardwalk, she can't really see a good way out of here. Looking for a way out while being so low to the ground and looking through the legs that follow the thoroughfare proves to be most difficult. Though she knows which direction is which in the carnival, nothing outside of the carnival looks familiar.
One thing you all have learned is that things aren't as they seem in this carnival. Maybe this is on purpose; illusions to make the carnival more fun for patrons. Maybe not... It's difficult for you to determine the true intentions behind this mystery. What you are for certain about is your friends are here and may or may not be in trouble, and there is something here in this carnival that is NOT fun. Quite the opposite actually. Is that intentional?
"Whether we want to investigate what happened to Chandler, figure out who that weird girl Scratch saw touching me was, or even just leave and go home, we’re going to need fairy wings! Don’t you think?"Chaseasks the group. "We need to find out where they are and get some for ourselves so we can walk around the carnival safely. But where do we even start looking?" Chase wonders aloud, uncertain if her plan will even work.
As she says this, she remembers that the guard is still looking for them, and adds, "Should we create a distraction? I have these." The Tabaxi pulls out the caltrops she grabbed from dad’s workshop before coming to the carnival. She thought they might be fun and took a whole bunch of them. Chasegrabs a a few of them and tosses them onto the ground where people is passing by, hoping someone will step on them. Sure, it might hurt a little, and they might get angry and perhaps shout, but if it helps distract the guard and they can slip away unnoticed…
(OOC: Okay, we are kids. I don't expect these caltrops to be very harmful. I'm imagining them as harmful as stepping barefoot on a d4 dice :P Also, do we have any idea where we could get fairy wings? There must be a place where they are stored? )
[The fairy wings are given out at the ticket booth, and you are unsure of where it would even be. They are handed out to everyone with a purchase of a ticket.]
The caltrops being flung into the thoroughfare cause quite the commotion as 9 people step on them and fall down, all of them clutching one or both of their feet, and all of them wearing a pair of fairy wings.
Illuwensneaks a glance at the wings worn by the people who have fallen down. Are they worn over the clothes, or attached to them? Does it look like they could easily be slipped off without the wearer noticing?
"We could take the wings off of one of the people that fell down?" Isy questions. "But then they are in our position, and the guards will go after them. I don't really have anything that could help. A signal whistle would just bring them here, and I don't want to start a fire."
Scratch, who has been looking back and forth between the approaching security guard and the legs of the carnival-goers begins making a low humming noise while his body seems to almost vibrate. Chase has seen this before. Her twin is getting very nervous. Like a released spring, the male tabaxi shoots out into the thoroughfare to the nearest collapsed individual and attempts to steal their fairy wings.
OOC: Not sure what to roll. Here's a D20. I'll let you look at my character sheet and add whatever modifier fits. 19 rolled in the game log.
With the grace of a cat, Scratch bolts into the crowd of distraught carnival patrons and is able to snatch not one, but two sets of fairy wings off of the fallen victims.
The wings in the bin do look quite used and a bit rugged. You would need to look for some materials to repair them and make them passable. Maybe the bin also has something you could use for that?
Unfortunately, the commotion is the perfect distraction. As Scratch turns back to look at the feat he has just accomplished, the shadowy figure that had frozen Chandler takes the opportunity to strike once again. The figure reaches out towards Scratch and... [I need a wisdom saving throw from Scratch]
Chasewas still basking in the chaos she had caused with the caltrops, her eyes gleaming with satisfaction even as she thought, "Phew, good thing mum and dad aren't seeing this!" Because of this distraction, she didn't notice her twin's uneasiness until it was too late. She turned to look at him and even began to say, "Scratch, what is th—?" but the pink Tabaxi had already bolted.
For a split second, she considered taking advantage of the commotion to grab the rugged fairy wings and inspect the bin, but then the misty figure appeared over Scratch, and all her priorities shifted in an instant. Chaselet out a feral hiss, her ears flattening and tail lashing as she charged claws unsheathed. "Leave my brother alone!"
WIS saving throw: 10 in game log (sometimes it's not fun to play a character with low wisdom)
Looking up at the shadowy figure, the same one — or similar at least — that had "attacked" Chandler, Scratch's ears also go back, but his in fear. He doesn't even notice his twin lunging.
Frozen at the sight, Scratch is unable to move and prevent what is about to happen. The figure reaches forth and touches Scratch.
Chaseunleashes her claws on the shadowy creature. After the hit lands, with its hand on Scratch's chest the creature looks at Chasewith an unsettling grin then disappears into mist.
Chasewatches as her brother begins to slowly lose a small amount of his height.
Shrinking by about 3 inches, Scratch has no memory of the event. His mind immediately goes back to being impressed with his feat of athletics and dexterity holding 2 sets of wings in his paws.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Lex sees the tabaxis run out and get engaged with the shadowy creature, and, thinking he can probably fix whatever’s wrong with the wings, darts and sneaks over to the bin to grab the wings and any repair material he can find.

"We need to get home. We need to tell Chandler's parents!" Illuwen points to the southwest. "Is that a bridge? Maybe we can get across it."
When you look across the bridge it seems to be more carnival. This place is way bigger than you first realized.
As you look back under Candlefoot's caravan you see the security guard is still searching for you and seemingly getting closer.

They are worn over the clothes and seem to be tied on around the neck like a cape.
Looking around you see a trash bin with what looks like a set of rugged fairy wings and other carnival refuse.
"Do you think we can grab at least one pair from over there?" Isy asks, pointing at the garbage bin.
Lex nods, "Yeah, at least one of us would have a set!" He looks back at the twins to see if one of them is feeling fast or sneaky.
[OOC: Lex is neither terribly sneaky, nor very fast.]
