Everything here is 5th edition, right? D&D Beyond is a 5th edition toolset, so mostly everything on these forums will center around 5th edition. There may be a few exceptions in the PbP forums, but for the most part, 5th edition is what you'll find.
Can I play something other than D&D on this forum? All PbP on the D&D Beyond forums should use the Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition rules, however you are free to use any campaign setting and homebrew that you like.
I'm new here, so I have to run a test of some posting stuff directly related to the tags. Let's see how this goes!
I'm going to Attack the Goblin with my Club, which does not have the versatile property. As a Bonus Action, I will [Tooltip Not Found]. I'll Fire Bolt.
Let's see how many of those I got right...
EDIT: It will take some getting used to, but I think I've got the hang of this. Maybe.
Hi! I'm not sure if this belongs here or on a still more general FAQ pinned thread, but:
I've been on this site for some years now but just recently started signing up to play and then to DM on these boards. I haven't yet been accepted as a player in any of the threads, but have gotten some players signing up for my thread to whom I've sent the campaign link. But I've never been sent a campaign link myself, so if I am chosen myself I have absolutely no idea what to do with one if I ever do get one, obviously I click it but how does it then know which of my characters I want to associate with that campaign?
Also, I can't seem to find any information on this site about how to use "My campaign" as a DM. There don't seem to be very good general instructions provided as to how to use this SITE and all its different features, or perhaps they're scattered among various sources but I';ve never been able to find a general help guide or FAQ as to all the different features of D&D Beyond and how to use them; if there is one please send me the link. That also will answer the reason why I'm asking the first question now. I haven't been able to find any feature in "My campaigns" to manage fully realized NPCs with all the stats as opposed to monsters or more generic NPCs, so I was thinking of rolling my NPCs up as if they were my characters and then linking them to the campaign. But if I don't know how to link a character I want to play to someone else's campaign, then by definition neither do I understand how to use the invite link from my OWN campaign to get that NPC in there so I can, for instance, compare rolls in the game log if my players try an opposed contest of skills against one of my NPCs.

From what I've gathered so far, you want to scan the Play by Post and Recruiting threads to find a game that has the tags "Public" and/or "Recruiting" at the top; the DM of that thread will generally make a post pretty early on detailing how they want players to apply to join that campaign (though I believe some "Public" threads are free to join without needing to apply, I've also seen others that still ask for applications but are public for anyone to APPLY, as opposed to the Private threads where the protocol is to send a message to the DM first asking if they are open for another player to join in).
Usually the application is by means of a post in the thread asking to join in, and the DM will set out exactly what information they want in that. Once you've applied by whatever means the particular DM asks for (post or PM), they will decide if your character fits well with the group they already have and/or the campaign concept; most DMs will message the chosen players with a link which will allow you to join their campaign -- that's what I was just asking about the refinements of, so I'm not sure of the details of what happens from there on the player's side, but that's the basic mechanism

Is there a way to temporarily change the user name like we can change avatar pictures? I am in a Play by Post game and would like my posts to have my character's name instead of my 'account name'.
Anyone have advice on the best ways to share images with players when DMing a PbP game?

Testing. Is an ability considered a skill all by itself? Nope, [ skill ]Intelligence[ /skill ] doesn't work.
What is this new translate rollable dice blocks icon at the top of the bar, how do you use it?
Test :
Attack: 23 Damage: Unable to parse dice roll. (Necrotic)
Character Sheets
Can you use character generator sheets on post to play yet?
Do I need to purchase anything to play pbp?
