"Well we did see a bat looking at us when we came through." muses Chipper. "Vampires. Nasty creatures." he says solemnly while taking the stake from Kessintra. His interest is piqued by the wizard and possible magical secrets, however he recognizes the party's interests. "Seeking out the burgomaster's daughter first while we're here does make sense as does getting an ally. Though I think the wandering Vistana should probably be a priority for us too if she doesn't like to stay in one place for long."
Taking a moment he casts mage armor upon himself in preparation for the search.
Kessintra's eyes narrow as she remembers the eyes in the mist and the bat observing them. With all the fog about, a vampire could blend in easily in mist form. The trip back to Barovia Village is a tense one for her.
Her eyes search the streets for anything out of the ordinary or anyone to speak to. Gertruda's disappearance still plays on her mind, the mother's sobbing doing nothing to ease her concern.
Despite the scarcity of people in the streets, you do find one person. They nervously twitch and look away. "The... The burgomaster? H-he died. He lived there." He points to a mansion on the outskirts of town. "Now, I must go, before...." The man runs off.
"Before wh--" Kessintra can't finish her question before the villager disappears from view. She frowns and shakes her head, turning to head towards the mansion.
A weary-looking mansion squats behind a rusting iron fence. The iron gates are twisted and torn. The right gate lies cast aside, while the left swings lazily in the wind. The stuttering squeal and clang of the gate repeats with mindless precision. Weeds choke the grounds and press with menace upon the house itself. Yet, against the walls, the growth has been tramped down to create a path all about the domain. Heavy claw markings have stripped the once-beautiful finish of the walls. Great black marks tell of the fires that have assailed the mansion. Not a pane nor a shard of glass stands in any window. All the windows are barred with planks, each one marked with stains of evil omen.
Kessintra felt the stirrings of the spirits around her, restless and agitated, their unease mirroring her own. The air here was thick, heavy with the weight of old horrors and lingering curses. She could feel it pressing down on her, clawing at the edges of her senses.
“Something fought hard to get in here,” she murmured, her voice low, "Or keep others from getting out."
Should we enter? This may be the only way to get the information we seek. Garrick suggests hesitantly. I do not fancy disturbing this building but a few dangers shouldn’t keep us from doing what’s needed.
Kessintra nods and carefully moves up to the door to check if it is locked. If so she will attempt to lockpick it so they can get inside and investigate.
You slowly start to turn the knob. Locked. As you start to reach for your lockpick, the determined voice of a young woman calls out from inside. "Begone, foul allies of the devil!"
"Ireena,Madame Eva told us you were in trouble. I apologize, I didn't think you'd still be here after seeing...the state of it." Kessintra steps back from the door guiltily.
There is no response for a moment, then you hear the unlocking of the door. The interior of the mansion is well furnished, yet the fixtures show signs of great wear. Noticeable oddities are the boarded-up windows and the presence of holy symbols in every room. The burgomaster is in a side drawing room on the floor—lying in a simple wooden coffin surrounded by wilting flowers and a faint odor of decay. The woman has auburn hair and wears breastplate armor and holds a rapier. "Yes, I speak of the devil Strahd."
Looking at the woman’s attire Garricks says, You seem well prepared to deal with difficulties upon your path. Tell us, what troubles you about laying your father to rest that you have not already done so?

You easily remember their aversion to sunlight and running water. You can also remember their ability to charm people and turn into animals and mist.

After about an hour and a half of uneventful travel, you yet again arrive at that gloomy village. The sobbing still rings through the streets.

“The mother is still crying… At least we have her daughter’s name. Perhaps, someday, we can reunite Gertruda with her.”
Amelia approaches a nearby villager, speaking to them in a gentle manner.
“Greetings,” she says, “We are traveling warriors, and we’ve heard your burgomaster is in need of aid. Could you direct us to him?”
Despite the scarcity of people in the streets, you do find one person. They nervously twitch and look away. "The... The burgomaster? H-he died. He lived there." He points to a mansion on the outskirts of town. "Now, I must go, before...." The man runs off.

Hello there! Garrick shouts. Are you the burgomaster’s daughter or Gertruda? We are adventurers ready to help.
"I think you'd know which, but I'll humor you anyway. My name is Ireena Kolyana. His obsession and 'daughter of the burgomaster.'"

"Madame Eva? Who is-? Nevermind." Her voice takes a sober tone. "As for leaving, I can't. Not until the burg- my father is laid to rest."

By “His” do you mean Lord Strahd? We were brought here to end his curse. Can you let us in to speak with you?

We recently learned your father has passed, has he risen again, unnaturally? Where is he now? We can lay him to his final rest.
