Sylvantras quickly dispatches one of the three rats that suddenly appeared, the other two leap at his legs and both miss, they rock back on their hind legs preparing for another leaping attack.
Mathias swings at the one on top of the barrel and misses but quickly follows through with the lit torch, giving it a kiss of heat. Get back rats! he shouts as the creature flees to the dark side of the barrel. For his trouble, another rat leaps from the barrel toward his back and hits, it's tiny claws digging in for 1 pt of damage.
Marion effortlessly ends another rat just as he feels the brush of sharp tiny little teeth on your calf from another rat, your quick reflexes pull your leg away just in time. As you spin to face the newest vermin, out of the corner of your eye you catch a glimpse of one running into the opening in the wall and dart off down the eastern passage in to the darkness....
Mathias tries to maintain his blade ward Concentration Con save 12 then quickly spins and whacks at another rat with staff and torch. Attacks 19 and 13 for 7 bludgeoning and 1 fire damage.
Emboldened by her success, Marion tries again to serve up some rat tartare, and finds the most wounded or northernmost surviving rat more than equal to the challenge, then remembers Mathias' encouraging words!
Sylvantras glances over his shoulder and sees that Mathias and Marion have things well in hand before shifting his primal mark to the next rat and attacking.
*Primary Attack AC 12, 12 Damage including Hunter's Mark, Off Hand attack to remaining rat if the primary attack hits, AC 20, 5 Damage*
The last rat makes a desperate run for it's hidey-hole back under the stairs, giving Sylvantras an attack of opportunity. please make an attack with advantage.
Marion and Mathias finish off the last two on that side, Marion remembers seeing one run through the opening in the wall and got away.
"One ran through the opening in the wall and got away!" Marion exclaims, and moves towards the opening in the wall aggressively, sheathing her swords and nocking an arrow to her longbow.
Mathias Knoble raises high his torch following close behind Marion, “Oh tales will be told and tails will be shown, proof of the mighty rat slayers, especially that big one.”
Marion standing in the dark hallway, her elven eyes quickly adjusting to the lack of light, spots the running rat just as it rounds the corner. About that time Mathias steps in behind her with his torch, it take a couple of seconds for her eyes to adjust.
You move forward about five feet when you hear the grinding of gears, followed by the swoosh of blades slicing the air and the high pitched squill of a rat taking it's last breath....
as you round the corner you see a beautiful mosaic on the floor before you, and about 5 feet into that mosaic the rat you were chasing...cleanly cut in half.
As you look around the corridor the light of the torch catches some writing on the wall at the end of the corridor. After you dust it off a little you can read it...
Regarding the cut in two rat, Sylvantras turns his attention to the poem on the wall. "Some sort of clue to avoid the same fate that befell the rat I would wager." the ranger says.
*OOC - Based on blood-splatter and the position of the pieces of the rat's body, what path across the mosaic does it look like it took? Perception check 11 if required*
"My best guess would be to step on the light blue of the air until we're five foot in, then move to the greenish grass for another five feet, then down to the dark blue water, and then finally to the section of the mosaic with the campfire...assuming I'm reading that poem correctly..."
Marion takes out a dagger and pries ineffectually along the edges of the first panel then shrugs. She nods to Sylvantras and walks across the mosaic in the method he described.
“I wholeheartedly agree with Sylvantras and would gladly take the risk in your place dear Marion, unless you prefer to lead the way.” Mathias will either follow Marion across assuming she makes it, or he will attempt the crossing.
Hesitantly you take your first step onto the colorful tiles, whomever goes first steps on to the air section of the first scene...and nothing happens, as you step to the green tiles resembling grass on the second section...again nothing happens. The second in line follows suit as the first of you steps on the dark blue tiles of water within the third section...again nothing happens. The third of you steps onto the first section and the second of you follows onto the second section.
Whomever is first takes the big step onto the fire of the forth and last section, the other two hold your breath as he tetters, almost loosing his balance before he one foot hops to the other side in the clear.
You each follow suit and congrats, you have passed the first trap. ((first time I played this it took us three days of posting to figure it out, y'all got it right off, congrats))
The party now stands on the other side of the mosaic floor, there is a door directly in front of you and one to you left. The only light given off is from your only torch. What would you like to do?
Marion whirls, tracking her companions movements. She springs into action, thrusting and cutting at the northernmost rat still alive.

The rat is laying in what looks like the water section within the first scene.
Marion can make an investigation check to try to figure how the trap works.
