Hadrian's eyes widen slightly in surprise as the goblin breaks cover. He hears Kellan's call...But isn't entirely convinced violence is the answer here. Regardless, he prepares to give pursuit.
The moment the goblin pops out, Farra shoots forward to cut him off. Her feet seemed to barely touch the ground as she dashes around the small goblinoid, sliding to a stop in front of their intended path of escape. She aim the bow in her hand at its head. "Nowhere to run my little friend."
Move: Farra takes the dash action, which gives her 70 feet of movement. Hopefully that's enough to get her to 10ft the opposite side of the goblin.
Kellan hurries forward as well, though he cannot match Farra's speed. He holds up his amulet, his hand and eyes glowing divine gold for a moment as he focuses on the goblin. "You won't harm anyone else." He declares, despite being unsure if the creature can understand Common. It doesn't matter.
Hadrian leaves his longsword sheathed as he moves forward, crossing his arms as he considers the small goblin, now functionally surrounded."Maybe it's time to drop the scimitar friend, and consider a nice calm conversation instead of...Whatever it is you were doing. What do you say?"
Persuasion: 23 (or 10 if this has disadvantage due to combat)
The creature's eyes narrow as it shifts its gaze from Kellanto Hadrian.
Passive Insight > 12
As you watch the goblin, you get the sense that it doesn't seem to understand the words that are coming out of the nobleman's mouth (which is an oddity on its own, what kind of person, goblin or not, doesn't know common?) However, it seems to understand the intent behind them...Or perhaps it just realizes there's no way it can fight its way out or run.
"Tnak!" The goblin cries, a curse in some language you don't understand. Throwing down the scimitar at your feet, it spits on the ground, then crosses its arms with frustration on its face.
Back on the road, the wagons have stopped. A few of the other guards take a couple steps forward, but stick next to their respective wagons.
OOC: You can drop out of initiative unless you intend to start whacking him anyway.
"Hm, doesn't know Common. Any of you know Goblin? A bit pointless to catch him if we can't get information out of him." Kellan relaxes slightly but keeps his concentration on the spell just in case the creature might try to run.
Farra frowns, lowering her bow. "I've never had need to speak Goblin before." She scratches the back of her head, pondering their predicament. "We could take him with us I suppose, then release him once we get to town. Follow him from there if we wish."
Xari sighs as Ash the owl refuses to acknowledge the big man's attempt to request an aerial scouting sortie of the area. While his companions interrogate the incomprehensible goblin, Xari himself scans the trees and other surroundings in a slow circle, looking for any other scouts or threats.
Xarian'sPerception to notice any other immediate threats: 16
IF he notices nothing, he rejoins the others at the front, mumbling to the caravan civilians that the threat seems to have passed for now, but to stay vigilant.
"I... I don't know how to speak goblin either They always sound like they just stepped on a nail whenever they open their mouths. Weird that he doesn't speak any Common. I... in my pack, I have some ah... rope. S-So... should we tie the little guy up for now and keep going?"
"Hm."Hadrian flicks a glance at the other swordsman, "not entirely pointless. Farra has a good idea anyway, we can always turn him use later and figure out where his friends are hiding to get a better idea of what they're doing...And I'm not really in the mood to execute a disarmed goblin for hiding in a bush."He crouches down in front of the goblin. "In the meantime we can try to get some things across anyway."
Starting simple, he gestures to himself, "Hadrian."
"You,"he points at the goblin now, then walks two fingers across his palm "travel..." then gestures at himself and the others again "with us."
"Misbehave," he holds up two fists as if to fight, "or try to run" and mimics running. Then he mimes tying a rope "we tie you up. Or worse."He finishes, drawing a thumb across his throat.
"Got it?" He puts a hand on the goblin's shoulder to walk him over to the caravan, keeping him away from the wagon and the other travelers."I'll keep an eye on him. If he acts up we can hog tie him and throw him in the wagon."
"Alright," Kellan agrees reluctantly, eyeing the goblin with restrained suspicion, "Let's not allow him to become a distraction from our duty though." He gives the others a small nod before ending concentration on his spell and returning to his spot in the caravan to keep watch.
OoC: I don't even know what kind of check to ask for Hadrian. Hell, performance? We'll go ahead and continue on, but the check will determine how well the goblin seems to have "understood" you.
Xarian& Kellan: There's nothing that sticks out to you in the immediate vicinity as a threat. Certainly no more goblins hiding in the brush, and no signs of a further ambush up the road.
The goblin sneers as he's lead over to the rest of the caravan, but is more or less subdued as the wagons begin to move forward again. He mutters(certainly curses) to himself as he marches forward with Hadrian'shand on his shoulder.
Other travelers with the caravan that are nearby watch with interest for a bit, but soon lose interest as you seem to have things under control. Except for Andy, who continues to watch the goblin with nothing short of wonder. Pim eventually falls back to walk between you all, eyeing the goblin with a suspicion to rival Kellan's. "So...What's the plan with this one?"
Having encountered goblins in the hills near Amphail, far to the north, as part of his town guard patrols, Xarian's curiosity gets the better of him and he stows his tattered spell book for now to approach the small humanoid. The big man attempts to look imposing while (relatively) unthreatening.
Most goblins are part of... I don't know... tribes, I think? Clans? Sometimes led by another goblin or by hobgoblins or bugbears I think...
Following Hadrian's lead, he points to himself, saying "Xari", then shows the goblin a faded brooch with the modest symbol of the Amphail Watch, saying "Amphail" out loud. He then points to the goblin and looks questioningly, trying to convey that he is asking the goblin's name and tribe. He also looks the little guy over for any symbols or insignia that might be worth remembering for later, in case other goblins of the same clan might be nearby.
Hadrian shrugs as the wagonmaster comes over to them, still keeping his hand on the goblin's shoulder. "He didn't really put up a fight. So take him with us for now, let him go when we reach Greenest. Doesn't speak Common, so we can't really ask him any questions. Unless you know someone in the caravan who speaks Goblin?"He asks the question, but doesn't really expect a positive answer.
As he talks with Pim, he half pays attention to what Xarian is doing. Perhaps by the end of the trip they'd have some rudimentary communication system worked out with the little guy.
Xarian: Roll insight or history as you examine the goblin for hints as to his origins.
The goblin watches the large fighter with suspicion for a few moments. Finally, he points to himself. "Rox." His eyes go the brooch, and he merely shakes his head.
"I don't think we have anyone who does..." Pim says slowly. For the time you've known him, he's presented himself to be a decent man. Doesn't anger quickly. Gets things done quickly and efficiently. Not a shred of cruelty. But he is still a commoner...And many commoners don't view the likes of goblins with as much leniency as you might. So you're not surprised when he outright asks: "Why not just...Take care of him here?"
Kellan exhales and reluctantly shakes his head. “Because he’s not a threat right now.” His voice is quiet but firm, his expression unreadable. “Killing a prisoner who isn’t fighting back—that’s not justice, Pim. That’s execution.” His grip tightens slightly on his shield before he continues. “If he gives us a reason—if he tries to run, or puts the people here in danger—I won’t hesitate."
Persuasion if necessary to quell Pim's concerns somewhat: 16
