There are some things I need to get down in this first post. (So please bear with me in the subsequent yapfest.)
First of all, to anyone looking at this- I already have a group I'm planning to play this with. (If you're not in this group (people, you know who you are), please PM me if you're interested. If I get a few of those, I'll try to set up a campaign page.
This is a school account, so I won't be able to post on weekends & breaks (sorry, this includes the 10-ish weeks of summer break).
Anyway...on to the game!
Some rules I like following:
1. The "Wile-E-Coyote" Falling Rule. A little edit to the D&D falling rules in which, when a player begins to fall, they and other characters have until the start of their next turn to stop the falling (before normal rules take effect).
2. Group Initiative. In combat, instead of each player rolling a die for initiative, each side rolls a die and takes their turns at that time. (I'll probably try to use mob rules from the new DMG, and I can do away with this (probably by adding a fixed initiative) later if fights get too imbalanced.)
3. Once-a-day Posting. I'm only taking this up now to speed up the story- this also only applies in combat. Outside of combat, feel free to post whenever you want. Except during breaks, I'd expect at minimum twice a week.
Character Info:
Lvl 3 Characters, no limits on class/species/source used for either. If you're using a homebrewish class (say Critical Role's Blood Hunter) please PM me about it first so I can know.
Roll ability scores in the thread and then input them into characters (rerolling all ones).
In the post, please state ability scores, name along with species and class, a brief background, and a reason why you were at the tavern in Kyoto that night. (Hold on, hold on, I'll get to the story in a minute.)
If you want any preexisting relationships between characters (say siblings/friends), PM me about it.
Terra had always wanted to serve humans. Providing them with everything they needed to flourish in their home. For ages, they grew and developed, becoming a formidable force. Wars were fought, divisions were made, and humanity struggled to achieve more, but Terra still aided them in their hours of need. But Terra, ever kindly, had its own secrets...
January 17th, 2137 - Somewhere in northern Siberia:
Vladimir surveyed the massive drill, spinning as it dug deep into the ground. Groups of workers clustered around them, proud that their hard work had finally paid off. This mine would be one of the greatest in the world, digging ten miles deep into the earth's crust-- deep below the freezing permafrost that had chilled him to the bone today. A cheer erupted from the workers as a loud grinding sound was heard from below. He could finally sleep well tonight, knowing that he had made his family proud.
January 18th, 2137 - Six hours later - Somewhere in northern Siberia:
The glowing digital clock next to his bed claimed the time as 1:37 AM, shining a faint light around the room. Vladimir had managed to get to sleep after the party, the grinding sound of the drill permeating everywhere and providing a sort of peaceful static. His peaceful dreams had not yet been disturbed by some other error or flaw that he would have to fix. At least, until 1:38, when his communicator crackled, then lit up as a voice came through, speaking in a frantic yet still gruff Russian. "--thing at the drill site. Come quickly! You have to see th!--" The sound died away amid a sudden burst of crackles, but even before then Vladimir was gone, racing towards the site as he put on a heavy coat.
Snow fell outside, obscuring his vision, but he had experienced this before, following the memorized steps towards the drill. While he ran, he muttered under his breath--a pep talk, or perhaps prayers to some deity. "Please, not another accident."
The drill site was devoid of people, the large drill standing lonely in the midst of the blizzard. Vladimir carefully turned on a flashlight, providing him a better view of the black, smoky tendrils that floated through the night air. That's also when he realized that the drill's characteristic grinding had stopped. "Oh shit. Oh shit, oh shit, oh sh--" Backing up, he attempted to flee from the smoke, but the wind blew it towards him, and his bulky clothes weren't maneuverable. As the smoke caught him, he slowly stopped, according to cameras from a nearby building, letting the smoke enter him and run its course. His coat slowly fell off as his arms and legs grew, the rest of his body warping in different ways. He stared at several onlookers who were just cresting the hill. A roar. Screams. Then darkness as the camera cut out.
This attack spawned not only one of Terra's buried secrets, but slowly woke many more. The Plague, as it was called, spread through the world, warping humans and turning them against each other. Some of humanity's greatest fears awoke, intent on destroying them and reclaiming what they called "their own." However, it wasn't like humans had no defenses. Some strange beings captured humans who managed to escape after learning the creatures' magical arts. But the Plague affected humans the most, forcing them into walled cities at the edges of the world.
Almost two hundred years have passed since the incident in Siberia. Humans have joined forces with other strange spawn of this magic, such as elves and dwarves, but they still refuse to take up arms, even as cities are destroyed in the relentless fervor of the Plague's victims. Only strange travelers connect these cities now, bringing supplies and news across the world. Coincidentally, some of these strange people met each other, joining their magical prowess and combat skill to battle evil. It turns out that some of these eldritch personages met, on a temperate fall day in the ancient city of Kyoto. The bar, named the Watering Hole, was a peaceful place for travelers, built into the wild forest that had grown in the city. The long branches of a weeping willow fell over the roof and street side of a rough wooden frame, and small, floating lights sparkled near the ceiling, providing a light illumination. Coupled with a dirt floor, the place radiated peace and nature, a nice change from the outside world.
Many were there, including you. Who are you? And why were you there?

Human Paladin - Andrey Volkov
Ability scores: 81117151612
Andrey Volkov is part of an organization of Paladins named The Pact of the Cleansing, based in an undisclosed location. Behind his sunken eyes hide shadows of his past, which only he and a select few of the brothers of The Pact know of. Andrey is haunted by his past experiences of unimaginable horror; something to do with The Plague. He is tormented by his past experiences, and pursues evil to destroy it forever.
Andrey always wears an amulet around his neck, hidden under his coat and armor. Engraved on it is the mark of The Pact, symbolizing his allegiance with the organization and his loyalty to The Code of the Cleansing. He is extremely loyal to The Pact, saving many and rising through the ranks from an adopted refugee to a highly experienced mercenary. With this status, he was sent to recruit other humans eager to fight The Plague. On one such expedition, he had a secret meeting with a member of the Magadan Royal City Guard, eager to start fighting The Plague instead of preparing for it. Andrey introduced himself, as well as The Pact of the Cleansing to the newcomer. "What is your name, comrade?" he asked. "Sergey." "Where are you from?" "Before coming to Magadan, I lived just east of Yakutsk." Andrey's mouth dropped open. "Who is your father, Sergey?" "Ivan Volkov. Why do you ask? Do you know him?" "My god," said Andrey. "I am Andrey Volkov. You're my brother!" Sergey fainted in front of him.
Since their reunion, Andrey and Sergey worked together to fight The Plague. Andrey followed The Code of the Cleansing very strictly, while Sergey followed The Code a little more loosely, preferring to get their mission done. Eventually, the pair was sent to Kyoto as an emissary to meet with the leaders of other organizations fighting The Plague, not only of humans, but also Elves and Dwarves; trying to convince them to take up arms and battle the plague.
Glorp was just a normal human who had dreams of being a blacksmith and getting enough money to have a stable life, until he saw the plague spread. He was on one of his part-time jobs, he wanted to learn more from the people who worked at a drill site. Glorp was on security camera duty that day, just to make sure nothing out of place happened. But for some unknown reason, the security room was locked and he couldn't enter. Glorp kept pushing on the door, and again and again until he broke in. That's when he saw one of the workers get taken over by some smoke, "It" looked at the camera for a moment. "It" attacked the workers right in front of his eyes, his newly formed friends, just...gone. Dead. Glorp was transformed because of the exposure to the plague, it turned him into a dwarf. He is nor a plague bringer or a host of the plague, but he remembers the feeling of the exposure to it. It hurt so bad. It hurt, soso bad. He vowed that day to try his best to prevent his friends from dying so that they don't experience that, nothing else matters enough for him to care about it. Glorp tries to hide this by being overwhelmingly goofy and silly, but if anyone tries to look at him a little more, they could easily tell because Glorp is very bad at hiding things.
That night, he was going to go off for drinking, you know how dwarfs are. And he was looking for a new job as well, to get more books. So both wants aligned he asked a local resident where a tavern or bar is, and that is how he landed in the Watering Hole.

I changed it (BTW the backstory isn't in my character sheet [yet])
Ghazghkull Uruk Thrakka was part of the Initial response force, loving the rush of fighting he immediately helped out smashing the Plagues monsters in Northern Germany. Ghazghkull Uruk Thrakka saw as some of his compatriots grew taller as a side effect of the plague, slimmer, faster, more agile. He thought "Me toooooo" so he purposely got afflicted by it, just to become slower and SHORTER. He did become tougher and was able to drink more alcohol, so he was happy! One day his cheerful life changed as all but him and two of his squad members got massacred, this fueled him to fight, he only thought of fighting and he became dumber, and dumber until the travelers named him Ghazghkull Uruk Thrakka for they were similar to the words he would say in his rage. He is a goofy goober character.

The peace is eventually broken as the regulars become tipsy, standing up on tables and belting out strange songs. Groups of people enter and leave as the afternoon becomes the evening, and eventually, the two brother-paladins, Sergey and Andrey Volkov, are approached by a short man in armor who sways while he walks. "Hello, friends," he says in slurred speech, wrapping an arm around Sergey. "What' you doing here?" You don't know him, but it seems that in his delirium, he recognizes you two as someone else--and as his voice becomes stronger as he speaks, you think that he doesn't have a great relationship with them. "Stealing my gold, eh?" he sneers. "Trying to hide? I'd recognize you anywhere!"
The rest of you observe this from around the bar as the man continues to shout at Sergey and Andrey.

"Peace, good sir. We are not those you seek." I lock eyes with the stranger, showing him a hint of the horror I have faced (OOC: Heart of Darkness). "You do not want to hurt us." I ready Command (WIS 11 save) if the little man does not heed my warning (OOC: Drop if he pulls out a weapon, Grovel if not).
Those who look into your eyes can see that you have faced unimaginable horror and that you are no stranger to darkness. Though they might fear you, commoners will extend you every courtesy and do their utmost to help you. Unless you have shown yourself to be a danger to them, they will even take up arms to fight alongside you, should you find yourself facing an enemy alone.

"You don't want to mess with us." I say. "We're not who you think we are." I glare at him as if daring him to try something.
(OOC: Could you roll Persuasion or Intimidation along with that?)
