Jex looks back in disbelief. "Hey, I got the other one didn't I?" he calls back. He mumbles in frustration as he walks back in. "No respect...I get us all the way in, kill 6 bugbears, 3 hobgoblins and 8 goblins single-handedly... No gratitude..." Joining the others back in the building he picks up some fresh arrows from the fallen goblins as he passes. Looking down at Thurston with the hobgoblin he frowns in frustration. "What are you doing? We don't need him, slit his throat so we can get these people out of here and strike at the leaders."
Cheeks a little flushed Jex is a little taken aback by the contact but quickly recovers a cocky smile back on his face. "Huh? Oh no problem. Well it would have been a problem for most. But I'm not your average goblin slayer. That's why my help is usually so expensive, but somehow here I am." He stops in his tracks, his muscles tighten and he bites his lip in a scowl, walking off as though suddenly realising he was on the end of a cruel trick, he mumbles to himself as he leaves. "Wait, why am I here? Who is paying for this? Hurrig summoned us, I had better find out what the rate he negotiated was."
Thurston snaps the hobgoblin neck with a omninous crack and he comes up the stairs and says to Jex " Sorry, you were saying?". Jex can see that he is genuily asking for what he was saying.
He then says to the others, looking to Brynja.
"Ok now that you are free we are going to move into their leaders. The men already have weapons and we are going to take back your city. Would you be able to keep yourselves safe? We really got to go now..."
Brynja, is in the yard, field-stripping one of the fallen hobgoblins to throw together a make-shift chain shirt. She flexes its longbow and swings the longsword experimentally, feeling out the weight of it.
"I'll bring 'em somewhere safe. Just keep the bastards distracted and away from this part of town! Good luck, Norscan."
She offers Thurston her hand to shake, with a determined grin.
Val drops the goblin bodies without ceremony, their heads striking the floor with a hollow thunk sound. She looks at Brynja with a raised eyebrow. “But you are clearly a better warrior than many. You should be fighting, not pushing mugs.” She shrugs.
Seid pushes his way out of the building. “Not the time for ideal chatter. I will signal the others now. Prepare yourselves. This is about to get very messy.” He looks at everyone with a very meaningful glance. “Know this well, friends. I am about to commit to an action that will not only label me an outcast among my fellow comrades, but likely paint an assassins target upon my back should it become known I aided in this. We cannot fail to slay them all. Do not underestimate them. They are cunning beyond belief.”
With that Seid steps outside, points a finger towards the sky and sends a bolt of fire streaking straight up into the sky, one hundred and twenty feet up... a chill runs down his spine as the spark glows in his wide eyes. “...and so it begins...”
"Huh, maybe they'll pay me to kill you." Jex smirks "Let's go hit the leaders wizard. Send your signal then you and I must be ready to take out the captains as they summon their troops."
Val looks at the wizard and nods solemnly. She starts to heft her Maul, but as she does she hears the soft clank of metal cup and she remembers something... She removes her pack and takes the beautifully wrought chalice from the side and stares at it thoughtfully for several moments, clearly torn between her own superstitions and the power available in her hand. She sets her jaw and without a word, walks to a nearby barrel filled with water. She plunges the chalice into and as she lifts the goblet out... blood begins to splash out into the ground. She turns to glance back at her companions with a determination on her eyes before putting the bloody chalice to her lips...
She tips back to vessel and opens her throat as the thick, metallic-tasting blood flows down her throat. She chokes a little at first, but forces the gag down as the amethysts begin to glow. A strange coldness begins to fill her stomach, but she feels... empowered! Stronger! She looks again at her friends with a bloody grin and she plunged it back into the barrel again... and again... until the vessel draws nothing more than water laced with strings of blood. She wipes a line of blood from her chin and as she puts the cup away, her friends see that she has changed... Valaith Rimehand Kalukavi was young, but weathered and she was not gorgeous. Now she looked youthful and... beautiful! The disfiguring scar upon her face changed to a graceful line, her slightly too large nose thinner and flawlessly shaped. Her hair took a luxurious sheen and her eyes shone like opals. She looked like a Warrior Queen. Even her voice had a seductive silliness to it as she spoke. “Quickly now. This only last so long.”
Coming up the stairs, Brynja nods out the window towards the street.
"Ye've got a runner there, lad. Anyone got a bow handy?"
She holds out a hand expectantly, tapping her foot while she waits.
Bründir quickly paws over his shoulder for his crossbow to find the space missing. Before he can react, Brynja is already out the door. As she looses her volley, Bründir stares for a moment and thinks of how much he regretted giving away his bow.
"Bründir! Hurrig!" A little voice exclaims, when they finally reach the top of the stairs. A young human boy comes running out from amongst the crowd of freed prisoners and hugs the nearest dwarf tightly around the waist.
"Where did you go?" He demands indignantly. "They wouldn't let me fight!"
"Well o'course ye can'ot fight, lad. Shite's been tough goin' since we left town. Ye gonna take a whole army by yerself when th' watch could'na do a thing?" Catching the aura of rapidly growing disapproval, Bründir swallows the rest of his words, "We got a surprise fer th' craggy wretches. Just get safe first."
However, when the dwarf hears Val's praise, she laughs the comment off with a rueful smile.
"Oh, I just bring the lads their drinks," Brynja replies with a wink. "Wouldn't want to put poor ol' Anders out o' a job now!"
Bründir turns a skeptical frown on his mother, "Ye remember all those stories, Ma? The ones what kept me up an' starry-eyed? Time fer th' ones ye said I'd hear when I got bigger. Ye don' shoot down a runner like nothin' just slingin' mugs."
Brynja, is in the yard, field-stripping one of the fallen hobgoblins to throw together a make-shift chain shirt. She flexes its longbow and swings the longsword experimentally, feeling out the weight of it.
Bründir rushes out after his mother, watching here strip and don the armaments, "All th' damned stories, woman-" a hand barely misses his head, but an immediate follow-up catches his face square.
"Ye don' talk to yer mother like that, first. Second, I heard ye th' first time, but it's not the time, ye damned ninny." She grabs him by his beard and gives a yank. The younger dwarf pulls away easily since the grab seemed to be for more groomed and seasoned dwarves, "Last, I told ye all ye needed at th' time: stories of brave heroes an' adventure. Keeps th' twinkle in a boy's eye and fire in 'is chest. If I'd known ye'd be trounsing about like...well I'd've told ye more."
The hilt of Dumdrengi catches her eye and she seems to forget everything she said while pointing to it, "Keep'er close; she's a special one." Brynja throws an arm around her son and pulls him in for a hug as much as her laden hands allowed, "Don' die, I've got a lot to say when we're done." Bründir gives a nod and returns the love before meeting the others following Seid's signal.
"Let's go. We might try gettin' Anders to push toward the hob leader's tent if we can get to'em." Dumdrengi's blade bares in the sun and rests on Bründir's shoulder.

The sounds of battle ring out across Shamleyside, as Ringrut leads the Dwarves in a charge, surprising the goblins resting at the northern camp. The deft little monsters scatter before the onslaught, seeking to rally to the north. However, Anders' men are ready and waiting on the other side, and cut down many as they gather. Now the battle is met in earnest and horns of alarm can be heard sounding all around the village, followed by yips and howls from the gathering goblins. It will not be long before their numbers close in on the uprising.
As the charging Dwarves collide with the goblin ranks, Anders' men cut off any attempting to retreat. The goblin captains call to their underlings to hold, and, for a time, they do stand and fight. However, they are outnumbered and no match for the furious Dwarves driven to defend their home. Ringrut leads front and center, roaring in anger and surrounded by fallen greenskins as he swings a battleaxe in wide arcs.
For Jex, the battle around the northern camp makes perfect cover for him to slip through. He takes Seid by the sleeve and moves as fast as he can towards the bridge, hoping to get across before anybody is fully aware of what is happening.
"Seid, we need them to see magic being used here against goblins, and the second we are in range you need to set fire to that command tent. Start yelling about how their services are no longer required."
Seid nods to Jex and uses his magic to send an illusionary voice echoing loudly over the battle. “Kill all the goblins! We have no more use for them!” He then begins to send numerous bolts of fire streaming into the ranks of the goblins in an attempt to make them believe hat the Majinobi have turned against them.
As they reach the bridge they see two goblins trying to block the passage. As soon as they see the group approaching, one of them try to blown up a horn, but Thurston charges forwards, roaring as he does so and grabs both goblins by the neck. The one of the right hits the norscan forearm to no avail. The one of the left seems to think better and uses his curved knive trying to stan the human between his ribs. But the poor cared goblin knive is no match for the mithril forged of the elves and the blade breaks against it.
Thurston smash their heads together and when they are still groggy throw them both flying down the ravine.
As battlecries roar in the distance, Bründir turns excitedly to the rest, "Party's starting, lads! Either pull up yer boots or yer dresses, and get movin'!" It only takes a few quick minutes to round a corner and find the battle underway.
Several dozen dwarves filled the streets carrying makeshift clubs and recovered weapons. While their progress couldn't be called "tactical", the space before them was a very clear killing field. The few goblins unfortunate enough to investigste the ruckus were immediately pelted with arrows and javelins. Bründir lept into the mob's bulk and began crying over the crowd, "Stone-brothers, look at yer 'omes! They smashed windows an' broke doors! Worse, they made ye slaves! Wisdom of th' mountain tells us: Half given's twice received. Don' stop at half, damnit! They earned their full pay of work, so give'em ev'rythin' they deserve!"
A cry rings out at Bründir charges near the front ranks. For all the fervor of the dwarves, they served as more of a shepherding force. Once the goblins were sufficiently pushed, Anders' crowd surged forth and enveloped the goblins. Stuck between hammer and anvil, the goblins were cut down to the last.

As the party gathers by the ravine's edge, they can see a great deal of motion on the far side. Dark-armoured ranks of hobgoblins are forming up, the captains marching back and forth as they prepare their men to counter attack. Feral howls echo about the edges of the village as the worg riders gather for an assault, and to the east the bestial roar of approaching bugbears can be heard on the near side of the ravine, heading west through the streets to quell the uprising.
In the distance, Jex spies Warlord Kung standing outside the command tent, barking orders left and right.
As the miners and guards let out a cheer of victory, a large group of bugbears rush out of a side street and crashes into the dwarves with a bestial roar! Several of the dwarven miners fall to the weapons of the bugbears and the humans among the uprising look as if they are preparing to flee when Anders rushes forward with blade high and shouts over the screams of the fallen. “To me! FOR SHEERCLEFT!”
The wary miners find themselves filled with a strange battle-lust as they watch their Captain, covered in gore, break towards the mass of bugbears! The humans let out their own primal roar as they surge forward around Anders, taking a forward line at his directions. The vanguard crashes into the bugbears as a cacophonous din arises. Anders directs yet another line of spear wielding humans quickly around a side street to come around and hit the flanks of the bugbear unit.
As the humans begin a brutal counterattack against their beasties foes, the dwarves rally around Ringrut. “Come lads. Can’t let them bastards take any credit o’ savin’ our skins. Let’s show them tall bastards what we’re made of, boys!” The dwarves set their own defensive line, holding the bugbears from advancing any further. Cries of pain from surprised bugbears fills the air as the flank is pierced by spears! The flank falters and collapses as the men break through the line. En masse the bugbears fall to men and dwarf alike, those near the rear break and flee as they witness the combined fury tearing through the fellows....
Seid stares across the chasm at the massing ranks of hobgoblins organizing themselves at the direction of their captain, clearly recognizable by the half-plate armor he wore. He stands out in the open, his bright blue robes standing out against the darkened hues of Sheercleft marking him as one of their allies. He begins to gesture and speak arcane words as three glowing, golden orbs appear and streak across the open chasm… then burst as they slam into the Captain’s breastplate! While the energy doesn’t penetrate the armor, the Captain feels the transferance as a bruising starting to form. Seid grins and waves across the way, making a crude gesture with his hands. He turns to the heroes and grins. “Get ready. Jex, you have your opening now.”
The hobgoblin captain grunts as the force of the spell hits him, and looks across the ravine at Seid in confusion. He bellows something at his men in goblin and the warriors let out a collective battlecry as they start to charge towards the bridge.
Jex looks back in disbelief. "Hey, I got the other one didn't I?" he calls back. He mumbles in frustration as he walks back in. As Jex passes Brynja on the way back to the tavern, she gently lays a thick-fingered hand on his arm.
"Aye, that ye did. Thank ye f'comin' f'us," she tells him, sincerely.
However, when the dwarf hears Val's praise, she laughs the comment off with a rueful smile.
