Pettilaen's heart races as he goes to check on his allies. The sound of dogs barking from below is clear to Pettilaen, now that he waits just above the stairs... a sound that reminds Pettilaen of a near-death experience he had just months ago. Wishing that he hadn't heard the sound, he contemplated staying up above. We need someone to scout, and make sure things up here don't take a turn for the worse, right? They'll be fine... they can handle themselves!Eventually, his conscious gets the better of him, and that his loyalty should be held higher than his fear. Last time, you were alone... think of it this way: now, you have friends!
Reluctantly, he heads down the stairs to assist in whatever shenanigans his friends have gotten themselves into, pulling out his rapier and hoping for the best.
Portia gets to her feet glad the dogs are well trained to guard and adjust her tabard over her armor. It is no worse for wear after having been out in the dark tracking down goblins. "They don't make doors like they used to."
She looks over Bullden's shoulder getting a much better angle of the room this time. At least Gert could count to six. There were even crates on the bed and the dogs seemed to be making sure the back of the room was well guarded. Obviously the Genasi didn't plan on staying or he wouldn't have stacked stuff on the bed. How did so much stuff go past the bar and not be considered odd? Was some of this stuff part of the bar stores for lack of anywhere else to put it?
"Someone has some explaining to do. Like how is all this stuff lugged in by one guy or is it even his?"
((In case you need it Perception roll of 7+5=12 for anything else that stands out as odd other than obvious))

The gnome closed her eyes for a moment, taking a deep breath and letting her years of training kick in. She was good at magic, at least, that was what they had told her when they took her to that school. She would not let all of her studies be for nothing, she had to prove that she was useful here.
Her green eyes flashing open, she spoke lowly to the two next to her. "I can blind some of them, but only for a few seconds. I can do it right out of the gate, or we can wait until we know where the source of that whimpering is. Either way, I'm ready to go now."Her right hand instinctively flew to the bird cage pendant hanging around her neck, as her left raised with a spell ready to fire.
NOTE: It would not be unusual, in a wayside tavern of this nature, for someone to unload some of their goods with them that they're not comfortable leaving on a cart outside. This was a larger amount than is typical, but not enough to raise eyebrows. You guys may have even seen golden pirate dude's buddies carting the crates downstairs initially and not thought anything of it.

"Oh, nevermind. I'm tired from chasing goblins. I remember some crates being lugged in by other guys." She has to wonder what this genasi is carting across the country, but it could be anything and nothing in the room shows it is more than a crate or a dog. "Unless any crate has holes, anything inside alive initially would have suffocated. I'd like to know, but we only have seconds before someone else shows up despite the brawl so we could try the spell." She looks over her shoulder at the stairs. "I'll tell the story since I was down here first."

By this time, the small gnome can be seen making his way around the corner of stairs, and comes into view of Portia, Bullden, and Zina, with his rapier drawn and ready. Seeing all of his friends alive and well, with only the dogs barking, he sighs, out of relief, but doesn't sheath his rapier. Quickly making his way over, he asks Portia, "What in the world is going on? I could easily hear those dogs barking, and if the brawl gets under control, one of the employees is bound to hear those dogs barking and come down to investigate." Thinking for a brief instant, he does a simple hand gesture, and the sound of a viola playing music comes into play from the location of the stairs. Hopefully that should drown out the dogs barking and buy us some much needed time.
Getting caught up on the events leading to Pettilaen coming downstairs, his brow furrows. "So, you're telling me that we can't even see or hear a kid in the genasi's room? What if Gert just misheard something?" He pauses, as he quickly considers the possibilities. "Unless the genasi stowed the kid in one of our rooms somehow. If he's a pirate, he could be proficient in picking locks. I'll go and check our rooms to see if this "kid" is in one of them. You guys find a way to keep those dogs quiet. We'll be jailed if the Flaming Fist gets involved and we have no evidence." Racing against time, he systematically starts opening each of their rooms and searching them.
Worth mentioning, though, that at least some of you guys know Gert relatively well, by reputation at least. Her personality is as leathery as her hide, but she's said to be a no-nonsense straight-shooter. Now "said to be" doesn't always mean "is"... But that's another matter.

"We've got to shut those dogs up somehow," Zina growled at her compatriots. Normally, she tried to be the cool voice of reason. But reason was currently barking at her that they needed to move fast. Without any more warning than that, she muttered something under her breath and pointed a single finger at the dog she thought to be most menacing. A white beam of light went hurling towards a creature. ((OOC: A super high 7 to hit.))
"Once we dispose of the dogs, we can better search the room," she prodded Bullden. "Our first priority has to be saving the child, and I'd bet my left hand he's in one of these crates."
Zina, still buzzing with energy and ready to get on with this fight, ducked under Bullden's arm and ran slightly farther into the room. She positioned herself so that she could get as many of the dogs as possible in her 15 foot cone. "Cover yer eyes!" She warned her friends, before casting color spray. Bright, flashing lights erupted from the palm of her hand, illuminating the room. ((OOC: Color spray effects 28 HP worth of dogs in the 15 foot cone. Affected dogs are blinded for a round))
The gnome used her remaining movement to run back and duck behind Bullden again.
Portia decides to step back into the room after the color spray is cast and most of the dogs are actually blinded. She is wary as she moves in with shield up and moves toward the dog that doesn't appear blinded unless another is in her way. She doesn't want to kill dogs just doing their jobs and worth a lot if well trained. She swings her warhammer to subdue the first dog in her way rather than kill it hoping to knock it unconscious for a little nap time.

Portia's hammer contacts the dog with a meaty thud, causing it to yelp then collapse to the floor unconscious.
Four of the remaining dogs snarl and snap at one another. The closest to Portia bites blindly in her general direction. She raises her shield to defend, but the attack fails to even make contact.
Bullden lands a sweeping blow to the side of a blind dog's head, causing it to tumble from the crate it was standing on top of and lie motionless on the floor.
There's no response from the room. Only the warning barks and snarls from the dogs.

Bullden is still in a defensive stance in the doorway. ((not sure if dogs go before me in the initiative order - 12 for me))
My actions will vary depending on if the dogs go next and what they do.
Bullden moves in to room next to Portia and attempts to take down one of the blind dogs next to crates.
Bullden swings his hammer (att: 23 dmg: 6 - prefer to do non lethal damage) and says, "it's clobber'n time".
AC 19 for when the dogs attack.
Bullden lands a sweeping blow to the side of a blind dog's head, causing it to tumble from the crate it was standing on top of and lie motionless on the floor.
