Portia listened to all the various demands of her group. She wanted to talk to Orst and Malark, but was interested in Zina's request, too. With at least two or so hours to the dinner invitation, she could probably acquire the information she wanted. Maybe she should talk to Malark, since she had the closest ties and see what he would actually tell her. The gods had a reason for putting the scrolls and the book in the same group. She would not mention the book to anyone since she did not understand that. Also, it was Zina's book, at least in that it still remained in her possession and maybe the spell she was putting on it had helped when they were in Beregost. Only one kobold had followed them around. She frowned a bit at how that had ended, but this was war.
"I will accept your invitation due to the discussion that will be had. It may be good we split up to see various people involved to pool our information better by dinner, but I'm not at all surprised by any of this. Coincidences over the past few weeks are not happenstance."

"I'll go with you." Kanon said to Petti. He was interested in what Orst was up to as well. Also, Orst is the one that organized their group and sent them out to find more details about the enemy so he wanted to check in with the dwarf.
Before heading off to Orst, Kanon hears Zina's request to see Mordenkainen and the Keeper of the Tomes. He whispers softly in her ear before making his leave.
On the way to Orst's quarters, Kanon makes a stop at the privy. The cheese seemed to have gone through him a little too quickly.
Zina listened to Kanon's whisper, nodding her head. The bard had taken excellent care of her during their last visit to Candlekeep, so she trusted him now implicitly. "Right, disregard everything I just said," she turned back to the First Reader. "I do not need you to take me to them anymore." Trading no more words, she followed Kanon out the door.
The gnome followed him all the way to the privy. Figuring he was just going inside so that they could have a private room to talk in, the illusionist burst in behind him. "Right then, what's your plan forthe secret meeting?"
Kanon's pulling his breeches up in a rush just as Zina bursts in. She sees the image of a beautiful extra-planar woman fading away. "He was just here!" He says. He looks out at the hallway before pulling Zina further in and closing the door. As he's buckling his breeches up, he says, "High Lord Dhelt and the Keeper cannot be trusted. Mordenkainen said that he's..." he tries to keep his voice as low as possible in the privy, "hiding Nieklot. He found something... something that even those in this Keep cannot know. He wants us to leave to Amn. Now." He's fearful to say more... even the privy could have unwanted attention. But if that were so, Mordenkainen would never have chosen that moment to arrive.
"Did I interrupt something?" Zina raised her eyebrow. "And who was that woman joining you? I didn't realize going to the bathroom was a group activ- oh," the gnome's face grew bright red as she suddenly remembered the rumors about bards. She had never taken Kanon for that sort of bard, but she supposed that she hadn't none him for that long. "Do you need me to leave so you can, ummm, finish?"
"Zina!" Kanon's face is flush with embarrassment. "If you remember your lore, you'll know that Mordenkainen uses..." His face gets even more red, "beautiful extra-planar women to send messages!" He shakes the implied image away. The woman was beautiful, and she did catch him with his pants down. "Focus Zina! We... need... to... leave!"
Mara made her way through the refugee camp, excited children following her. She found a place to sit, and pulled the small coin purse that Petti had given her out of her pack. "I'm sorry, I wasn't able to get much this time. Siblings will have to share." There was a chorus of 'aww's' but the children didn't complain. "To make up for it, I'll tell you about what happened while I was out. Do you want to hear about the Rock Giant?" This got the kids attention, and they gathered closer.
Mara began handing out the twelve gold coins, while she recounted the adventure with the Giant and the Hellriders, leaving out bits for sensitive ears, and embellishing other parts for entertainment. She loved the look of joy on their little faces, something these orphans needed desperately. They'd lost everything and she only wanted to give them a little piece of happiness. She thought of the dinner of lamb she'd been invited to, and after seeing these little faces, knew she'd made the right decision in declining it.
"Right, sorry," Zina's own face rivaled Kanon's in redness. "Candlekeep can't be trusted, we need to leave. Are we going to meet with Mordenkainen before we go?"
Portia left the meeting hall with left over goodies in a bag and looking for Malark. She had an uncanny feeling about things, but could only base it on rumors and knowing not everyone could be trusted. It seemed like Malark had not wanted to talk in front of so many people, but it had been spelled out. She frowned. It seemed the idea they had before Beregost fell, thanks to Orst, might have been the best thing to do in the first place. In that case she wanted some information from Malark to know where the scrolls did come from if they could manage a private conversation in this crazy place.

"Unfortunately no..." Kanon responds, "He wanted to keep this all as far separated from everyone else as much as he could." He thinks a moment before adding, "To be honest... if they think Neiklot turned traitor, they may suspect we have as well. We might not be welcome back. Or if we are, it might be in shackles. We need to leave as silently as possible, so I think we'll need Orst's help with that." Finally he adds, "He'll still be the good guy while we'll be the group that fled Candlekeep for their own selfish reasons. If there are any people not to be trusted in Candlekeep, they'll most likely say we've turned traitor. There's no turning back from this, Zina. If we leave, we might not be able to come back. We either help Nieklot and Mordenkainen, or we stay and watch as everything burns around us like the rest of these puffed up nobles."
Kanon shrugs, "I really don't think I can live with myself if I knew there was something I could do to help. And I trust and respect Mordenkainen and Nieklot..."
"People never liked me anyway," Zina said with a shrug and a small chuckle. "Why should the good folks at Candlekeep be any different? I'm fine being branded a traitor. The real people you'll need to convince are Mara and Portia. Are you going to tell them?"
"We can't tell them until we're well away from Candlekeep," Kanon responds. "We don't know what ears are listening while we're in here."
"We need to somehow convince them to leave... if not, we might have to do this alone." He hates the idea of splitting the group. They had been through a lot together, and even Mara was growing on them. "Lets go... we need to relay this to Orst and Petti. Maybe we can slip everyone a note with the details and let them decide if they want to join us. I really don't think Mordenkainen would have went through all of this trouble unless it were extremely important. And he said we need to leave as soon as possible..."
"You're the one that's good with words, how are we going to convince them?" The gears in Zina's brain were whirring as she tried to solve this particular dilemma. An idea sparked in her mind, completely visible on her face. She cast message, allowing her voice to magically appear right in Kanon's mind. "I have a spell that's ideal for secret messages. See! So cool. No one would be able to hear what I said except the person I choose. Of course, if we're worried about someone mind reading them, it wouldn't be very helpful... If you just think back, I can hear what you have to say too."
"That's a good idea," Kanon says. "Lets... get out of here before Petti starts forming weird images in his head about us in the Privy together." He moves past Zina and opens the door. After glancing around, he steps out. He indicates for Zina to follow and continues the rest of the way to Orst's room.
As Kanon and Zina step out of the bathroom, Pettilaen forms a confused look on his face, having sat down along the wall just down the hall. As he moves to join up with them, he's cut off by a group of stewards. Sarcastically, he apologizes, "Sorry, fellas. I was too short to see you guys walk by." Muttering under his breath, he approaches Kanon and Zina, very confused, his thoughts spinning with ideas. "Di.... Zina... Kanon... You two.." He brings the finger from his left hand into a hole formed by his right hand, moving it back and forth for dramatic effect.
His insinuation is quickly rewarded with a blush from Kanon's face and a slap to his own face by Zina's hand. "Shut up, braeg'fol, and don't talk." She forcefully whispers as she casts a spell. Her voice enters his mind. "Don't freak out, but we're going to run away and probably be branded traitors. But it's for the greater good and Mordenkainen. We can't say much because we don't trust these people. Act cool." His eyes go wide as he gives her a questioning look, but Kanon subtle shaking of his head confirms it: they stumbled into something big, and there was a good chance they were being watched. Act cool. He nods to himself, smiling. "I always saw the sexual tension between you two." he remarks, winking at the two of them. Kanon's face still blushes red, and Zina scoffs, but they say nothing. If the group was being watched, they had to act like everything was casual... or at the very least normal. Which the trio was not.
Pettilaen guided them through the labyrinthian hallways, getting them lost several times before Kanon decidedly took over. By a stroke of Tymora's grace, they heard Orst's voice echoing down the hall, in a loud discussion of shorts. Entering through the door, they saw him and a small envoy, apparently from Cormyr, if Pettilaen knew his insignias at all. He smiles awkwardly, moving forward a bit. "Orst! We're back from our adventure and with much to report." Glancing to the envoy warily, he continues, "Is there somewhere more private we can discuss our business?" Pettilaen was sure Zina would just message Orst like she did to him, but somewhere private would still be more welcome.
"I'm going to farjin kill you when this is all said and done," Zina growled, really tempted to freeze the rogue again. Of course, there were important things to worry about at the moment, but one day they would have time for their petty rivalry. By the time they reached Orst's chambers, the redness in her face had mostly faded.
"Orst!" Zina ran over and gave him a hug, utterly ignoring the other people in the room. "It's good to see you."
Hey Orst, don't freak out! It's Zina, she cast message again, this time directed at their dwarven friend. Don't react to anything I'm about to tell you. We need your help. There's some bad stuff going on here, and we need to get smuggled out. We can't tell you much, and we're worried the walls have ears.
Portia knew where her friends were going. She might not know how to get to where Orst was at the moment, but she could ask if need be. She definitely knew where to find Mara. However, before she joined them she would have Malark tell her everything the three leaders obviously knew already beyond what was said in the room. She nodded her head for him to follow her outside when she got his attention and stopped in a quiet spot.
She kept her voice low. "Someday we might sit down for a good chat again, but right now I need to know more. I'm not feeling over trusting of even talking in this place anymore after they seemed to already know everything you did without you having to report it anyway." She tilted her head slightly as she watched his expression. "I foresee being assigned to do something, but I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing for Beregost and the rest of the Swordcoast by Lathander's will. The more I can figure out of what is happening, the better I can discern the omens I'm already seeing."
