"There are a couple of key problems with your plan," Zina rolled her eyes. Did she have to do all of the thinking for everyone? "The cave-in idea is intriguing, bordering on possibly effective. But do you intend to have us be sitting in the cave when you blow the roof out? What will happen to the rope, and thus our way in and out, when the ceiling collapses?"
"I can only make one person invisible at a time, so keep that in mind," she continued, casting minor illusion and making a map of the cave as best she could remember. "I would also recommend leaving one of you big humans at the entryway to the cavern, that way someone can help the rest of us up. I would offer Pettilaen the job to spite him, but neither of us gnomes are strong enough to be effective up there. That person should also hold the ring, in case things go sideways."
Kanon nods, "Very good! We will need an isolated area of the cave so that we don't create a massive cave-in. Maybe we lure him away from the cavern into another tunnel somewhere else. I don't really like the idea of someone being holed up in the stream cave, but it might have to work that way. The point is, we need to lure the creature into an ambush."
"Now... what kind of illusion would work?" Kanon continues detailing his plan, "You've spent time in Blackstaff tower." He's pacing in front of Zina now, "That means you've seen some pretty powerful artifacts. What if you illusioned yourself, dead, with a staff of the magi? Do you think it would be interested enough to bend down and pick the staff up? I think so. Even if you just illusioned an artifact that you think it might be interested in. That might be all it needs to begin investigating! Maybe even a portal of some sort... My opinion is that this creature is probably interested in the same things as a powerful mage. So its only interest... is your interest, Zina. Illusion your wildest dreams to lure it to a spot!" Finished, he stands in front of Zina with his arms crossed. "So... what do you think?"
Pettilaen can't hold his thoughts in any longer regarding the pair's planning. Whipping up from the entrance to the cave, he hollers out, "Too complicated. You're planning for a possibility that more than likely won't even occur."
He makes the rest of the way over to them before continuing, "I've had Gaia with eyes peeled on the cave since we returned, and she hasn't seen anything. She's heard some voices far off every now and then, but they seem to be in passing. If we see signs of Gar, then we'll create an illusion of the wall and hide behind it like I did originally. What we need to be planning for is the inevitable encounter with the water elementals. They're in their natural element, but I have an idea to tag them so we can see them just fine." He looks to Zina's upset face. "Zina, you still have faerie fire prepares? If so, when we come up against one, I want you to tag it with the spell. That way we can see it when it's in the water. Also, I was looking through my spellbook and I have a spell which protects against elementals and other planar entities. If you have it, I would suggest using it on someone if possible, to make the fight easier for us. Kanon, you might have the spell too, in fact. Actually, Portia might even have it. But she's been oddly quiet since we returned... Maybe she's upset at us. Anyway, there's no method I've devised which will keep us out of the water, so we're just going to have to brave it and make a straight shot for that tunnel."
"On the incredibly small chance that Gar does appear and notices us, then I'll hold him off. I could survive the longest in a battle against him, and that would buy you guys time to hide." He grimaces as he reaches his hands down his pants, procuring the ring. "I've thought about it a lot, and I think it's best that you hold onto the ring during this, Zina. I'm more likely to get into trouble and mischief, and you're more likely to stay out of it. And, you can turn yourself invisible, if all of Hell breaks loose on us." He drops to one of his knees, holding the ring up to her in offering.
Portia let them jabber for some time because that would save her asking all sorts of questions. Of course, by the time Pettilaen got to offering Zina the ring to hold on to for safer keeper, she still had to wonder. All she could figure out was Temple of Evil lord, water elementals and searching. Of course, what would they expect to find in a desolate, wet hole? They did not know how many elementals. They did not know what this lord could do. Zina knew it was crazy to face it. And Kanon's idea of causing a cave in had her wondering how in the hell would they even do that.
"Enough! You all are giving me a headache and obviously there is way too much tension for unanimous agreement on this matter. There are a lot of holes in your idea. One, you really can't say what the guy is doing down there with his elementals. You can only assume by what you see. Two, you don't know what powers he has. Three, you haven't stated how deep the water is and if there is a way not to swim. I am not swimming in chain mail and also fighting anything. Four, I do not have a way to light up stuff prepared, but I can give advantage to one person IF I hit with a guiding bolt. Five, if I do too much offensive, I can't be defensive too. Six, we don't even know if they are tied to Balagos and evil doesn't always work with evil unless they can get something out of it and usually end up screwing each other over."
She blew out a breath.
"So, here is what I know. We have the key to unlock some information that could help the whole Sword Coast in Zina's backpack. If that does not get to Athkalta, then we screw everyone over who even thought we could do this. We know about Balagos, we know about his evil hordes, and we know his power is strong in these mountains. We know there are things looking for what we carry with us. There is more than one evil in the world and we cannot be sidetracked by something we can only assume about beyond knowing it is there. I'm not going down a hole on conjecture, but I do know fully the mission assigned to us. So do we chance foiling our mission just to verify an assumption?"

Kanon suddenly felt deflated as Portia's words set in. The excitement of exploring the cave, the idea of demolishing the site of an evil organization, and the treasure that could have been found within all began to float out of his grasp. Portia normally had the final say in these decisions, so as the weight of her words set in Kanon took a seat on the ground. "Well... I guess that's it," he says defeated. "Lets... rest up the horses and wonder back into the death fog tomorrow."
"Sure," he adds, "We're sleeping a hundred feet from an enemy that might summon earth elementals upon us in our sleep, but I'm sure we'll be fine." He allows the snark to continue, "Maybe once this death fog has lifted, some child with delusions of grandeur will wonder into the cave and they can add the kid to their rituals of sacrifice. That's fine though, right? We have better... more important things to worry about. These are creatures, nay a group, that dwells in darkness and preys on the weaker. As a priestess of Lathandar, I'd think you want them abolished as much as the rest of us. I don't plan on failure, Portia... and won't base future plans on our failure either."
Mara listened to them bicker. She listened to Portia's words of wisdom. She listened to Kanon's whining. But in his whining, she felt he was right. She couldn't leave here knowing some evil grew in the darkness below. She stood, and said, "No," and snatched the glowing pebble from Kanon. She pushed past the gnomes, and crawled into the hole. They might not trust her, and she definitely knew they didn't like her, but she wasn't going to let them walk over her. Inching her way along, she followed the tunnel until she reached the opening. She was scared, but she knew in her heart that this was right. She gripped the rope, and began to descend, hoping she wasn't about to die.
While Mara was just about a stubborn as they come, so was he. And he loved it when stubborn people sided with what he wanted to do. Nearly giddy with excitement, he lept in the air, activating his Spazzledazzle with two clicks of his heels, and raced off after her. Quickly catching up to her while she crawled through the wet channel he could stand in, he whispered. "Great choice, Mara. We're doing the world and this region a favor by taking out these people. When you get to the mouth of the chasm, climb down the rope and then take a right. There's a tunnel and dry ground off in that direction." He mind melded with Gaia when within range, looking through her eyes for a few seconds. Not noticing anyone out of the ordinary (Perception of 8), he smiled.
Reaching the end of the channel, Pettilaen held onto the rope for support as he inched his way down. Reminding Mara once more, he said, "Take a right once you get to the rock I tied the rope to, and try to conceal your glowing rock as much as you can to avoid drawing attention to us as we make our way through."
Kanon watches as both Mara and Pettilaen make their way into the cave. He stands up and says, looking at both Zina and Portia, "We're doing this. But we can't do it without you. We need your help." He looks over to the horses and adds, "We can tether their reins to the rope... they won't be going anywhere." Before heading down himself, he allows both Portia and Zina to go ahead. After tethering the reins, he follows after them.
"We never came up with a plan," Zina mumbled, but took off after Mara and Pettilaen anyway. She had a golden ring on her finger and an even more priceless artifact in her bag, but she needed to stand with her friends.
Alright you braegfols, here's the plan. No responses, since I have to focus on sending this out to every person individually. She sent out in a message, one by one to each member of the party. Once we all make it to Petti's stupid rock, Kanon will cause a landslide so that the fallen rocks can hopefully form a bridge between our position and the tunnel. We need more ground so we're not fighting in the water. After we have the bridge, we'll continue to explore other parts of the cavern.
"Oh, stop the whining and grow a pair. At least now you know the details of what can happen if we do fail and don't get the other mission done. We need to see big picture and little pictures to better analyze things. And I sure did not accuse you of planning for failure because if I ever thought you were doing that I would stake you out over an ant hill or something else that can bug you out without being lethal." She grins showing that she might really do it, too.
"And never accuse me of leaving one evil to fight another that I am not fighting properly for Lathander. You have no idea how to judge how one serves. If Lathander is not happy with how I analyze and chose things, I sure hope he tells me. My relationship with my god is between him and me and my duties as a member of the Song of the Morning will be handled by those above me in the chain of command."
"Now get off your ass and in that hole before I change my mind about kicking evil harder than I want to kick you. I just want you to think harder next time about the ramifications of things in weighing all the pros and cons. I know you can figure out and plan greater things as you learn and grow. And I'm only being a hard ass about it because I want you to reach your potential."
She waves him into the hole and follows closely behind. "And you don't get to look at my ass while crawling." She laughs.
Kanon is grinning ear to ear as he crawls into the small cave. He knew that if they all decided to go and risk their lives, Portia would go with them. He understood he had selfish reasons for doing this. Hell... he could have just collapsed the tunnel entrance before they left in the morning. But where was the adventure in that?
Once they reach the cavern, he waits his turn to rappel into the main chamber.
In attempting to follow the rope from the creek-channel opening to the rock on which the rope is secured, Portia loses her grip and falls into the water.
Immediately, a crushing vortex is formed around her and she is sucked under.
(META: Portia missed a Strength saving throw on the elemental she awakened by falling into the water. She takes 15 points damage as it sucks her under and crushes her in its watery grasp.)
