The group leaves Phandalin, heading north on the road toward the Triboar Trail. Shortly after midday, they reach the Trail and head east. Clouds have rolled in, obscuring the sun, which is a great delight to Nif. It doesn't look like rain, but you never know. There is a slight breeze, which makes the walk more enjoyable for everyone.
Almost immediately after heading east on the Trail, a group of eight hobgoblins exit the woods to surround the five travelers. One of the goblins points at Karl and say something in the goblin tongue. A few others reply and a couple nod. All eight then draw longswords.
The (purple) hobgoblin immediately moves forward (N9) to attack Karl. (longsword attack: 21, damage: 5 slashing damage) The goblin had obviously analyzed Karl's defenses going in, because he is able to come in under the barbarian's shield and make a hit.
The (red) hobgoblin closes in on Zander (J10), swinging his longsword. (longsword attack: 11, damage: 8 slashing damage) Not knowing who he's dealing with, this hobgoblin is hesitant, and Zander is able to dodge out of the way of the blade.
The (green) hobgoblin follows the (purple) goblin (N8) and also attacks Karl. (longsword attack: 19, damage: 9 slashing damage; martial advantage additional damage: 6) Distracted by the first blow, Karl is unable to anticipate the next attack, and it also slices into the dwarf.

Zander raises one hand, and black whips of energy squirm out of it. They convulse in the air for a second, the coalesce into the shape of a long, black, serrated sword. Zander brings his hand down in the direction of the hobgoblin he is facing, and the sword swings down upon it.
Attack: 11 Damage: 12
If the weapon hits, Zander snaps his fingers, and the sound of a church bell rings, calling the hobgoblin toward the grave
DC 15 wis or 9
If it doesn't hit, Zander instead fires a bolt of black fire at the hobgoblin's chest.

"Ignorance is bliss, and you look absolutely miserable."
OOC: Zander, I'm assuming you mean Red. Also, I'm assuming the sword is your spiritual weapon. It doesn't hit, so I'm still assuming (again) you mean to hit Red with fire bolt. It is within melee range, so that ranged attack needs to be made at disadvantage, so I'll roll again for you: 8. Lucky for you, there's no section on the critical fumble table for spells.
OOC2: Please remember to give me all the information for your turn so I don't have to assume. The target, what you're using to attack, etc. Thanks!
In response to being the target of the (red) hobgoblin's attack, Zander raises one hand, and black whips of energy squirm out of it. They convulse in the air for a second, then coalesce into the shape of a long, black, serrated sword. Zander brings his hand down in the direction of the hobgoblin, and the sword swings down upon it. The hobgoblin had been watching and analyzing the sorcerer's maneuver and sidesteps the attack. At the same time, it thrusts out its shield, knocking Zander's arm to the side. A bolt of black fire erupts from Zander's hand, but it flies off between two trees harmlessly.
The (orange) hobgoblin steps up (I10) and also takes a swing at Zander. (longsword attack: 21, damage: 5 slashing damage; martial advantage extra damage: 8) The goblin swings its blade low, and it leaves a gash across one of Zander's thighs.
The (black) hobgoblin steps up beside its (red) comrade (K10) and swings its sword at Adrom. (longsword attack: 19, damage: 2 slashing damage) The dwarf moves to avoid the attack and almost gets out of the way, but the sword still does slight damage.
The (yellow) hobgoblin rushes Vondal, swinging its sword. (longsword attack: 4, damage: 6 slashing damage) (critical fumble: 8; new attack roll: longsword attack: 13, damage: 2 slashing damage) The hobgoblin's swing is so wild that it actually glances off the armor of the (green) hobgoblin instead, but doesn't do any damage.
"Hobgoblins, Goblins, Orcs - they're all scum and I hates the lot, specially when they start swinging at me 'ead when I was just walkin' 'long minda me own business" Karl yells as he enters a rage (bonus action) and then swings Pacifier II at the purple hobgoblin (Attack Attack: 23 Damage: 14). "See you're scratch and raise ya a wallopin'" he yells at the Hobgoblin.

Caught off guard by the ambush, Nif acts as if he is about to react before he suddenly halts and stops dead still as if possessed. With glazed eyes, he turns and points at the hobgoblins to his east (purple, green and blue).
In undercommon and a voice that sounds different to normal, he gives the command, "SLEEP."
"Hobgoblins, goblins, orcs ... they're all scum, and I hates the lot — 'specially when they start swinging at me 'ead when I was just walkin' 'long, minda me own business!" Karl yells as he enters a rage. Adrom notices a kind of heat shimmer out of the corner of his eye between him and Karl, but when he looks, he doesn't see anything and quickly turns his attention back to the action. Karl swings Pacifier II at the (purple) hobgoblin, the huge blade knocking the creature's shield out of the way and slicing through the armor beneath. "See your scratch and raise ya a wallopin'!" he yells at the hobgoblin. His target grimaces at the attack, then looks confused and then afraid, its eyes darting left and right nervously. Karl grins, interpreting the hobgoblin's look as it realizing it is in over its head.
Nif looks forward and back as the hobgoblins move in and begin attacking his partners. He acts as if he is about to react before he suddenly halts and stops dead still as if possessed. With glazed eyes, he turns and points at the (purple, green and blue) hobgoblins to his east. In Undercommon and in a voice that sounds different than normal, he says, "V'dri." Immediately, the (purple and green) hobgoblins sway on their feet, drop their weapons and shields, and then collapse to the ground asleep.
The (blue) hobgoblin moves forward to engage Vondal (N7). (longsword attack: 9, damage: 4 slashing damage) The monk dodges and weaves, and his attacker's sword cuts nothing but air.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
As Vondal avoids the strike, he draws the battleaxe mid-motion, and brings it about for a strike. Though a feint that misses by a mile, the weighted momentum is transferred into a solid leaping spin kick towards the hobgoblin(blue)'s face. The moment sandaled feet touches ground again, they spring off of it for another series of quick kicks to (blue) sternum and head if still up. And if not, the last kick goes to yellow before Vondal instinctively flourishes battleaxe around into an ever shifting defensive stance.
Action: Unarmed Strike Attack: 23 Damage: 5.
(Agile Parry Triggered, increasing Vondal's AC by +2 for 15 total)
Bonus Action: Spending 1 Ki point for Flurry of Blows.
Vondal is a whirlwind of maneuvers, but the (blue) hobgoblin is able to dodge the first and deflect the third. The second, however, lands, leaving a red mark that is sure to turn into a dark bruise on the creature's cheek.
The final (white) hobgoblin reaches his mark, Zander, swinging its longsword at the sorcerer. (longsword attack: 7, damage: 5 slashing damage) A combination of quick reflexes and his armor cause the blade to deflect harmlessly.
Adrom, you're up!
The map is basically the same as in post 1549. Blue and White have just moved in beside Vondal and Zander, respectively.
Adrom raises his weapon and shout a dwarven war cry
An intense light, like the one coming out of a forge, came out of his warhammer and goes towards the hobgoblin in front of him. He then moves to close the gap between the lines of his comrades.
( Guiding bolt to the grey hobgoblin: Attack: 25 Damage: 27 then move to K9 to close lines. )
Adrom raises his warhammer and shouts a dwarven war cry. An intense light like the one coming out of a forge shines out of his weapon and focuses on the (black) hobgoblin's head. The beam is blinding, and when it ends, the creature's head is a black, smoking mass. The body collapses to the road. The cleric then moves to close the gap between the lines of his comrades (K9).
Round 2: Purple (injured, asleep), Red, Green (asleep), Zander, Orange, Yellow, Karl (raging), Nif, Blue (injured), Vondal, White, Adrom
The (red) hobgoblin swings his sword again at Zander. (longsword attack: 19, damage: 5 slashing damage; martial advantage extra damage: 11) The sword strikes the sorcerer a mighty blow, knocking Zander unconscious.
Zander, roll your first death saving throw!
The (orange) hobgoblin, in an attempt to avenge his fallen comrade, moves around the (black) hobgoblin's crumpled body (L10) and swings his longsword at Adrom. (longsword attack: 12, damage: 8 slashing damage) The cleric sees the foe approaching and blocks the attack with his shield.
The (yellow) hobgoblin lunges at Vondal once again (longsword attack: 5, damage: 8 slashing damage), but the monk is ready for the attack and dances out of the way.
"Since mine's gone sleepy bye byes better find a new target!"Karl mutters to himself. "There's one" he says looking gleefully at the Orange Hobgoblin in L10 as he spots him try and sneak up on Androm. ) "Try and sneak up on my mate, well I see'd ya so try this on for size" (Attack: 27 Damage: 15 he says as attempts to cave in the Hobgoblin's head with a mighty blow from Pacifier II.
Pacifier II does a number of the (orange) hobgoblin while it is engaged with Adrom. The creature grunts at the pain, then its eyes widen as it looks around nervously. Adrom sees something out of the corner of his eye again. When he looks, he thinks he might see something near the (orange) hobgoblin, but then there is nothing.
OOC: Normally, speaking should only happen on your turn, but since I've been adding a little bit of reactionary narrative outside of Adrom's turn, I'll allow this tiny sentence.
Nif moves west to help Adrom with the first group, he swings with both his shortsword and dagger. The (white) hobgoblin is able to parry the shortsword, but fails to block the dagger, and it slices a big chunk of his chain mail away.
Still hacking away at Vondal, the (blue) hobgoblin swings his sword once again. (longsword attack: 18, damage: 2 slashing damage; martial advantage extra damage: 7) The monk is able to deflect the bulk of the attack, but comes away with a noticeable gash.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"What do you mean 'not right'?" Vondal calls back, and in the moment feels bite of steel. He growls rather than cries out from the pain, and in the next moment brings the blade around once around to build up momentum for an arm severing cut down on the hobgoblin(blue). If that's not enough, he jumps into a headbutt into the creatures chin followed by a leg dislocating blow to a less protected area.
While the first is to kill, the follow-up -- be it at (blue) or (yellow, if blue is slain) holds just enough back. "Nevermind! One thing at time. See to Zander!" Vondal calls back.
Vondal speaks to Toblen, explaining that the party is heading to Conyberry. He explains they hope to be back within a tenday. The human bids him and his companions a safe journey.
